Sony subsidiary Aniplex is bringing TYPE-MOON’s iconic visual novel Fate/Stay Night outside of Japan for the first time, but it won’t be available on PS5 at all. The sub-division of Sony Music Entertainment is instead releasing the visual novel on Nintendo Switch and PC, and it’ll be available as early as next week. Bafflingly, a collaboration with PS5 gacha Honkai: Star Rail is due in 2025.
Fate/Stay Night first launched 20 years ago, but was later ported to PS2 and PS Vita in Japan. This new remastered version is based on the handheld version, and promises high-definition graphics and visuals. It’ll only be available digitally for the time being, but we wouldn’t be surprised if a company like Limited Run Games eventually released a physical version.
In addition to the original game, Aniplex also announced plans to remaster Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, another visual novel making its debut overseas. This title also originated on PC in 2005, but was eventually ported to PS Vita in 2014. Again, it’ll skip PS5, and will only be available on Nintendo Switch and Steam.
We understand the market for visual novels is on Nintendo’s hybrid these days, but it’s arguably a bad look for a Sony subsidiary to be skipping its own console – even if Sony Music Entertainment operates independently from Sony Interactive Entertainment. Synergy between its divisions is something Sony has always been eager to instil, but it seems like there’s still a long way to go.

I’d make a joke here but to be completely Frank, I’m so used to to type-moon’s bizarre releases, I’ve unfortunately became dulled to it.
It might come out down the line, who knows.
The game was announced in January, you've had plenty of time to ask Sony why 😊
Im just waiting for Jez Corden to say that Sony has a secret deal for this to skip xbox when its not even coming to PS lol
Switch and PC are the best market for this kind of genre right now.
It makes sense to skip PS5 for a later release if this one is a hit.
@RagnarLothbrok And he’ll use your comment as his source!
Maybe they forgot who pays the bills. Time for a visit xD
Sony Music always works independently compare to other Sony subsidiary. But at least SIE and Sony Pictures already had a synergy between them.
I’m not familiar with the series but could it be due to how much Sony censor these kinda games?
If not it’s pretty confusing why it would skip.
Its especially weird because the other two VNs are on PlayStation. Holy Night and Tsukihime.
@jrt87 Pleasantly surprised the date is only a week away as well. Get on Tsukihime now!
@CielloArc but just how more work would it be to just release it on PS5 anyway. What would they lose? Especially since it's by a section of sony anyway.
@riceNpea Still doesn't stop it from being an embarrassing look on Sony's part.
@GymratAmarillo On people who are fans, genius. Also, what the ***** does The Last Guardian have to do with this?
Most people "don't buy anime games on Playstation" because Sony's support for them started to suck since their anti-japanese polices back in 2018.
And how in the world does your ***** say no one wants let alone cares about this when the Fate series has always been popular in the anime scene! Stay Night sold a quarter of a million copies in Japan alone and that's not to say of all the merchandise, tv adaptations and movies that came from it too.
And then theres Grand Order, which last I checked, has a Gross Revenue of over $7 BILLION. And you say "no one cares"? Shove your low IQ takes back up your ass with that lie!
@GymratAmarillo Tell me you have zero knowledge of what games PS5 owners will play without telling me you have zero knowledge of what games PS5 owners will play.
There are just so many things wrong with your amazingly generalizing post that I don’t even know where to begin.
@GymratAmarillo "most people with a PS don't care about anime games"
Please tell me your source isn't trust me bro 😅 don't know why this upset you so much but it is a bad look, this is a PS Vita game that's not being ported to a different PlayStation console.
@Tecinthebrain “Trust me bro, PS5 owners don’t want anime games. Never mind most JRPGs in existence, the Persona series, or games like that. Total one-offs.”
@guestwork they've had 6 months to ask Sony why it isn't out on PS but instead waited until the week before its out to be judgmental and say 'it's not a good look'. From a journalistic point of view, that's not a good look.
@jrt87 "I only buy VNs on handheld capable platforms anyway"
That is the precise reason why I like buying my VN on PS, because I can easily read these anywhere with remote play on my phone without having to carry around a brick everywhere with me.
PS California publishing is real sadness nowadays. I suppose they got into a nightmare when working on Tsukihime and post mortem stated not ever again.
This one is though
https://www.gematsu.com/2024/08/fate-extra-record-launches-in-2025-for-ps5-ps4-switch-and-pc
With Backbones & Portals, doesn't the PS5 offer the same VN playing abilities as a Switch, though?
@jrt87 personally, I think they are suited just fine for visual novels - other genres though? Not so much.
@Bingoboyop Given that we don't even have a PS4 version, I guess it would be a lot more work.
Like, Capcom won't release MvC collection on Xbox because the engine used on that port, MT Framework, isn't compatible with Series S/X. Maybe the same thing is happening right now where the engine used on these ports aren't compatible with PS4/PS5, at least not right now.
We are still getting an influx of Fate games, Fate/Extra Record was just announced and Fate/Samurai Remnant sold within expectations, there's still a chance for a port for this one, either that or a full blown remake.
So Xbox games are on PlayStation, PlayStation games are on Nintendo and Nintendo games are also on Nintendo. Everything is on PC except Nintendo.
2024....
I think visual novels are best played on a handheld, in my opinion. Reading too much on big bright TV would hurt my eyes, but on a handheld would be more comfortable.
I think it probably wasn't up to aniplex. It could have been type moon who chose switch and steam. And they probably chose aniplex for localisation.
