While the PS5 version of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been in a solid state for some time now, it was anything but at its release last year, so the Digital Foundry verdict of the now-dated last-gen PS4 edition is going to be a fascinating watch.
Respawn Entertainment has announced Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will make its way to PS4 consoles on 17th September 2024, costing £44.99 / $49.99. If you subscribe to EA Play, you can claim a 10 per cent discount. A press release does mention a new upgrade path for those who wish to turn the PS4 version into a PS5 one later down the line, but it doesn't confirm how much it'll cost. The PS4 port was confirmed to be in works just about exactly a year ago, so it seems it has taken Respawn Entertainment a while to get it running properly on the 11-year-old box.
At least the game itself is a really good one, and it doesn't sound like the PS4 port will lose any content or features. In our Star Wars Jedi: Survivor PS5 review, we awarded a 9/10 rating and said: "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor does what any successful sequel should do: it expands on the foundations of the first game and does everything better. Combat is just as enjoyable and offers more options, exploration is on a whole other level, and the Metroidvania elements make for engaging puzzles and satisfying rewards."
It's claimed the last-gen version will sport "a variety of optimizations aimed at maximizing the hardware capabilities of the consoles". It's going to be fascinating seeing it in motion next month. What frame rate do you think the port will run at? Make your guess in the comments below.

I think it says a LOT about where we are with the PS5/X generation and why sales and growth (or lack thereof) looks like it does, and what the industry data actually says about where people are really playing, if EA analysts decided the effort required to try to fit the game onto the PS4 in 2024 was actually financially beneficial.
This is what happens when we’ve reached a sort of technological plateau with specs and graphics. The PS5 generation has undoubtedly been my least favorite that I’ve lived through. Development timelines have slowed to a crawl, there have been unprecedented economic motivated decisions that have not only affected players but also developers, there are barely any exclusives for the current generation. Jedi Survivor was like one of the few current gen exclusives. I’m not saying more people shouldn’t play it, I’m saying that my $500 investment into a PS5 is feeling very lacking. I don’t see how the PS6 improves this problem at all and I don’t foresee myself getting one.
It will be interesting to see how it does for sure. I really enjoyed my time with Jedi Survivor last year but it did struggle performance-wise at times. Never enough to ruin the experience but it was noticeable.
Hogwarts Legacy ended up fine on the previous generation though so I can see Survivor doing just fine too. They have taken their sweet time with the port after all.
@NEStalgia Definitely makes you wonder, but at the same time, it's probably a bit of a special case since it's Star Wars. I suppose EA will be looking at the ultra casual market who might still game on PS4 and never cared about upgrading.
Still, it'll be really interesting to see how they squeeze it onto such old hardware!
I already plat'd this on PS5, but I love this game so much, gonna do it all over again! Hope it runs at a silky smooth 60fps on my PS5.
I love they’re doing this as people can’t always afford to spend £400 on a new machine.
They did this with Sonic from Megadrive to Master System and many other games like Street Fighter 2, Desert Strike etc..
@NEStalgia I think Switch 2 could be a factor. With Switch 1 being a gigantic success, 3rd parties are probably wanting to support Switch 2 early on. As a result of optimizing for that system, they may come to the conclusion that it's still worthwhile trying to port to PS4.
@Deoxyr1bose
I agree with a lot of this.
Imagine if TLOU 2 could've been ported to PS3? Unthinkable, right?
The fact that 'current gen exclusives' can be ported to the PS4 speaks a lot about this gaming generation.
Look at the state of the generation, lots of remakes/reboots, sales not meeting expectations, lay offs, prolonged game development… the costs to develop souring have seemingly had a domino effect within the industry, there’s too much risk involved and too less time to meet publisher/developer expectations. They obviously wanted to reach the last gen audience as there’s still a significant amount of people who haven’t moved on but it’s still a factor to the current state of the generation we are in.
This is an interesting move considering how it ran on current gen hardware from launch I always thought this was a next gen game alone I enjoyed it so will be one to see what they had to do to make sure it’s playable.
Lmao a last gen port in 2024, they should port it for the ps3/360 while they're at it
@Grumblevolcano Nice call on the Switch 2 port, on top of things as always. Not like they can come out and announce a Switch 2 port of this, and let's just assume the first game, until Nintendo announces the Switch 2. Probably figured if they are porting to Switch 2 might as well add PS4, probably comparable power. Bonus points b/c I didn't think of it first.👍
@NEStalgia If anyone starts porting Switch games to Wii U then we'll know we've reached the end of the line for video game advancement. Though I'm not sure there are any games on Switch that aren't already on Wii U besides TotK and Mario Odyssey. 😝
what an embarrassing console gen this is
I wonder if Sony will introduce some stupid required gimmick for PS6 just to avoid ports to older gens. I hope not.
This game still has issues on PC and it took a bunch of patches to run fine on consoles. I can't imagine how bad it'll probably run on old consoles. I just hope they have most of their team working on the sequel rather than this port
It's not that great on a high end PC. I mean I can play it just fine but I expected better. I expect substantial compromises will have to be made here otherwise a devastating explosion may occur 😂😂
@Grumblevolcano Maybe, but, obviously in the absence of knowing what the Switch 2 hardware is other than likely assumptions, the PS4 and Switch architecture are radically different, so other than the work of downgrading textures and the like, I'm not sure the PS4 port will get them too far along. Unless Nvidia's planning to throw an AD102 into the dock or something, lol.
@Sunzy98 Sad but true unfortunately 😞
@ShogunRok One thing is certain, buying a PS4 preorder for launch day in 2013 was the soundest investment we ever made. $399.99 for 11 years of gaming. That's just $36.36 per year!
@NEStalgia That's a very good way to look at it!
Didnt it barely run on ps5? Oo
Easy. Lower the resolution, decrease the quality of lighting/shadows/reflections etc. Let's stop pretending there's a HUGE difference between the PS4/XB1 and PS5/XSX/S spec-wise. The biggest difference/upgrade by a mile is the SSD's in the new consoles vs. HDD's in the previous ones.
@NEStalgia 120 million PS4's in the wild and 50 million Xbox Ones compared to 60 million PS5's and 30 million Series X/S's. In one way it's a no-brainer that publishers are STILL catering to last-gen gamers, but it is also contributing to the slow growth, reluctance to upgrade for millions of gamers.
Remember the good old days? When the Super NES launched you HAD to buy one to play Mario World, F-Zero and Pilotwings because the NES simply couldn't run them. Same with when the N64 launched, you had to buy one to play Mario 64 because the SNES couldn't run full 3D polygonal games. These days cross-gen games are far more common due to incremental hardware upgrades, which lessens the appeal for the new machines.
I can't imagine the experience even being worth the hassle? Game ran like trash on PC and wasn't much better on PS5.
Now we're porting current gen games to last gen? Come on, what are we doing.
Huh. As others have mentioned, PS4 specs might not be far from Switch 2, so it might not cost more to do both when the latter is a no brainer.
But I'm also wondering if this might be adding to the rumors of a proper new handheld from Sony. The PS4 has survived so long and it wouldn't be hard to fit the base system (or even the Pro) into a portable system.
If a steam deck can run it then I'm sure the PS4 will do fine if optimized well. And more accessibility is always a good thing.
The ongoing last gen support isn't what speaks poorly for this console gen, it's dumb and greedy upper level management which has made this gen a true uninspired dumpster fire.
They squeezed DOOM Eternal onto the freaking Switch, remember.
I'll be curious to see how this goes.
Well, on the one hand, it's a chance to platinum this great game a second time!
@Luigia I'm assuming you js have never played the master system versions of sonic 1 and 2? They arent poets they. Are completely different games. Sonic one on master system follows same levels as mega drive versions but each one has different lay outs and all play differently
Sonic 2 doesn't even follow same level structure as the mega drive. These were definitely not ports
It's really hard to take the potential PS5 Pro seriously after reading this. They wouldn't go to the trouble of spending a year's (probably over) worth of time and resources to port this game to PS4 if they had sold enough on PS5, you smell what I'm cooking? Anyone who's chomping at the bit to spend money on a PS5 Pro needs a timeout.
Generations is done. Consoles are going PC. You're going to get the best experience on the latest hardware, after all consoles are releasing faster than games these days. Games are going to release on as much platforms as possible to make up for the rising cost in production. There aren't going to be much PS6 exclusives, most are going to release on base PS5 also.
I mean, other than the introduction of RT, I didn't see where the game could be too much for last-gen consoles.
still waiting on the ff 7: rebirth ps4 announcement
Its going to run like hell on it.
@rusty82 I’m playing them on my Miyoo Mini Plus and loving it!
@DennisReynolds yeah those PS4 fans and the Pro version are gonna melt steel 😋
@TheArt couldn’t agree more. i actually saw the writing on the wall when i first got into PC a couple of years ago myself . With them announcing “pro versions” of consoles and all, it really is just a PC-esque environment now.
@tangyzesty 100% 😂
@SleeplessKnight That's why i bunged a 6GB/s SATA 3 SSD in my Pro for £40!
Ok game didn't like it, got confused with the platforming more than any other game, combat was fair, cosmetics/secrets to cosmetics was dumb. It has balanced out what the other had but also didn't care for it either.
That and what a smaller Blu-ray size then the 4K Blu-rays hold the online update strikes again here too as the rest didn't fit the whole game on 1 4K blu-ray for PS5/Series either. Can't wait. Or EA going nah just offer it digital only?
It may be more fixed up and sure EA want those sales so last gen it is.
People seem upset that a publisher is porting a game to an older machine people still use. But also people are thrilled when an indie publisher makes a new NES cartridge. People be strange. I went into PS5 expecting mostly a PS4 pro pro, and am happy with it. I'm glad PS4 is still usable and relevant, because I gave mine to my daughter.
Before they announced this port a year ago, my best friend whom I got a PS4 with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order for Xmas said he'd wait for the sequel to release on PS4. At that time I was sure it would never happen and that he'd need a PS5. I'm happy to be wrong because now I can get him this game for Xmas this year, hopefully it goes on sale for Black Friday here in the US.
