As those of you terminally online enough will recall, shortly after the release of Baldur Gate 3 last year, a Tweet urging developer Larian to add real-time combat to its admittedly slow-paced RPG went mega-viral. This suggestion was roundly mocked despite (or perhaps because of) its earnest nature, with plenty of armchair game developers declaring it improbable, impossible, even. Today, SynthPotato stands vindicated, with modders taking the first tentative steps towards making real-time combat in BG3 a reality.

Spotted by PC Gamer, modder tinybike just released a "rough draft" of their real-time combat mod, with the caveat that they haven't actually managed to implement the "pause" part. They are confident this can be overcome and the system refined, and we'll be fascinated to watch the progress of this particular project.
The first two Baldur's Gate games employed the CRPG staple of Real-Time with Pause (RTwP), which allowed players to issue commands at their leisure before unpausing to watch the action play out and make adjustments as needed. With standard attacks being automated at regular intervals, combat certainly moves along quicker, but you lose some of the deliberate nature of true turn-based battles.
Mod support arrives on PS5 in October, and we can't wait to see what kinds of weird and wacky modifications make their way to console. Would you be up for a more classical take on Baldur's Gate 3? Let us know in the comments section below.

Sounds game breaking tbh, but still cool what the mod scene is up to.
"As those of you terminally online enough will recall"
That's not how you start an article lmao
Some fights have upward of 30 enemies. Good luck with that in real time...
Awesome news! I passionately hate turn-based combat and it's the main reason I still didn't play this. Hope it gets better.
I just wouldn't see real time combat working here... a lot of tactical nuance would be lost, unless you were pausing constantly anyway, in which case you may as well play it turn based? Only a fighter would benefit from real turn, because most turns are attacks anyway, but I hardly see the use of it for any of the mage based classes, or half the martial ones. Pathfinder used real time with pause, and I have to say, you get lost in the pace of the encounters sometimes, and they're not half as ambitious as what BG3 does.
@Scottyy Believe me, real time combat wouldn't work very well here. It's so easy to die in the early game, without proper control of your characters and strategy, you'd be seeing your party get wiped every encounter.
@J2theEzzo
It will be like FF7 approach I guess.
As in having an active time bar? That's not what the video above looked like... Or do you mean the remakes?
The point is, in some fights, you're against a vast number of enemies, and having to control 4 or so characters simultaneously, while trying to take advantage of things like setting up enemies for crits, etc. and keeping all your party safe/ alive would just be way too much to keep up with. At the start of the game, your total hp is about 10 points. That's 2 attacks, and you're dead. That translates to about 1 or 2 seconds in real time. In turn based, it's easy to manage, but in real time, there'd be no way to combat how squishy your team is, other than by giving everyone hundreds of hp, which essentially changes the game. This isn't Final Fantasy, after all.
How about adding the turn-based combat to the first two games instead lol.
I wanna see the Raphael boss fight on Honor Mode like this
Sounds like a way to completely ruin the game, to be honest! I just can’t see how it would work on some of the big battles.
Sheesh, no thanks. Baldur's Gate 3 was the first turn based game in a long time for me and I love how you can take your time to decide how to handle your enemy based on their weaknesses or whatever works best in the situation. I do hope mods will come to PS5 though cause a new playthrough would be fun if I could get certain weapons, armor sets or spells earlier.
@Scottyy Wouldn't Dragon Age be a better comparison? FF VII is more of a slow down than pause. If they implement slow mo, I'd be veeeeeeery impressed haha
I don't think I'd dare try this on anything other than easy mode, but sounds cool!
@Jayofmaya
Never played DA games.
