With Larian allowing modders to have at Baldur's Gate 3 for about a week now, the results are already looking quite promising, indeed, with detailed custom maps beginning to emerge. Heroic modders are attempting to take us where even the developer dare not tread, and with mod support coming to PS5 next month, console-bound adventurers can join in on the fun.
Spotted by Dexerto (thanks, IGN), a couple of custom maps have surfaced: one, a castle by the sea, and the other, the infernal realm of Avernus. If someone isn't already working on a full-scale recreation of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn in the BG3 engine, by the way, let's get on that and pronto.
In our 10/10 review of Baldur's Gate 3, we wrote: "Forget Baldur's Gate, let's go back to Amn: a platform and template now exists for a larger D&D exploration in the coming years, which is kind of incredible in its own right. It's complicated, but the principles are simple and sound."
Pre-release, we could not have predicted the year that would follow, with Larian becoming a bonafide industry darling, proving its GOAT status by walking away from Baldur's Gate at the top of its game. But our dream of a D&D platform built on the bones of BG3 seems closer than ever, even if it didn't quite take the form we expected.
Are you looking forward to a potential return to Baldur's Gate 3 in the future? What do you think of these early community efforts? Let us know in the comments section below.

With the power of that unlocked toolkit I'm very excited for what the modding community can dish up in the years to come. 🎉
So much potential for endless encounter design. Sounds glorious.
I hope the mod support, if it ever does arrive on console, isn't watered down like Bethesdas implementation.
However, my understanding is it's in fact playstation that makes mod availability on the platform such a difficult process to achieve and restricted greatly if it ever is.
Will be I interesting to see what sort of modding capabilities come to PS5. And if there will be any additional graphics modes to give a little more headroom for those mods to run smoothly. At the same frame rates we are used to.
I know we'll never get the full breadth of mods that PC players get, but I hope Larian are quite liberal with what mods they allow on consoles and don't take ages to drip feed a small amount of mods to us like most other studios that allow consoles mods do.
I'll be happy with a lot of new cosmetics and hopefully some new playable races on console (been wanting to play as a Goblin since day 1) and being able to play as other characters like Jaheira or Minthara as an origin character would be amazing and I know these mods exist on PC already so hopefully it doesn't take too much to get them working on console.
The idea of people being able to use the mod tools to create entire new areas, campaigns and characters for possibly decades to come is a truly exciting prospect and hopefully something we can experience on console. I know we'll never be able to create mods on console but I do hope they're able to bring a lot of the PC mods over at the launch of patch 7 on console. Hopefully one for a photo mode before they release it officially as I know they have planned.
The game is simply fantastic, and Larian are the best developer there is. Unparalleled!
One of the mods I would like to see is one that allows us those spells that Larian said were simply too powerful, the ones that appear happen after level 12.
When I finished my Tactician run recently, I reached level 12 soon after hitting Act 3, and as I neared towards the end I had 100,000 XP sat doing nothing. 100,000 is the XP cap, you still see that you're earning it, but that figure does not go up. I spent probably the last 10 hours or so earning XP that did not add to that total, so I have no idea what I actually had in total, but I reckon I could have got to at least level 18 with what I earned over all. Obviously you have to do everything in the game to earn that sort of XP, but the game is an absolute gem, so you never feel like you are grinding.
Love everything Larian do, and cannot wait to see what they do next. Hoping for a Divinity Original Sin 3, and maybe something set in a sci-fi universe would be cool...
I'm already so overwhelmed with this game, it's hard to imagine jumping into BG2 in this engine.. I knew the mods would mean big things but I might have miscalculated the scope of what this could mean with a big dedicated community o:
@Fiendish-Beaver My first playthrough, I tried to see and do absolutely as much as possible, and likewise, hit the level cap very early on in act 3. The rest of the time, it's just about optimising gear, but I'd absolutely have loved to eke out a few more levels and see what crazy damage you could do. I've heard that mods support up to level 20, as well as some new subclasses, so would be interesting to see if/how enemies scale!
Will this stuff be available for console players also??
@KundaliniRising333 Based on Doom and ARK i think Sony aren't as strict as they were with Skyrim and Fallout when it comes to mods.
@DennisReynolds I REALLY hope you're right
