There had been rumours of a remaster of Guerrilla’s 2017 open world adventure Horizon Zero Dawn for quite some time, but following the unexpected announcement of LEGO Horizon Adventures earlier this year, some speculated that insiders may have got their wires crossed. Actually, it turns out the PS4 re-release is real, as it’s just been rated by American classifications board, the ESRB.
The remaster, slated for launch on both the PS5 and PC, harbours no surprises according to its description: “Players guide Aloy as she learns to hunt robotic creatures and animals in the wild. Aloy uses arrows, spears, and explosive traps to injure and kill machines, boar, and occasional human enemies.”
Many will be dissatisfied at the existence of this remaster, arguing that the original game is perfectly playable on the PS4 and with backwards compatibility on the PS5. We’ll need to await more information to see exactly what’s been changed here, but we suspect it’ll bring the whole experience in line with sequel Horizon Forbidden West, which obviously had better graphics and gameplay.
Still, we predict there’ll be much hand wringing around this release. Many feel that Sony’s failed to deliver on its promise with the PS5, with long development cycles meaning we’re yet to see debut new-gen projects from the likes of Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch. While we don’t necessarily agree, it’s going to take a lot to convince us Horizon Zero Dawn is legitimately worthy of a remaster right now.
Will you buy Horizon Zero Dawn's remaster? (2,397 votes)
- Yes, I've never played it before
- Uh-huh, I love this game
- Maybe, I need more information
- No, I'm not a fan of Horizon at all
- Absolutely not, I've played it before

Maybe if it's free for existing owners...? Otherwise, I'm not really sure this makes sense.
I will play it because I never (really) spend time withe the original.
But having a full price remaster on a (still) new game is ridiculous imo.
No interest in this. Roll on AI I say, we need dev cycles for new games to shorten so there is less temptation to remaster already made games every 5-10 years.
@get2sammyb they gave out hzd to EVERYONE in pandemic. No chance they give this to everyone free.
@get2sammyb Might be a $10 upgrade like TLOU2, we've been here before
Hermen Hulst is accountable for this and he's running the brand to the ground with baffling moves like this.
Lmao the overwhelming negative results. I guess this is probably one of Sony’s lesser popular modern IPs.
I replayed Zero Dawn in the weeks before Forbidden West launched and it still looked great - hell, better than many PS4 games that followed it. I really can't see the point of this, it just feels like another line to this generation's running joke of "PlayStation; for the remasters". If it's one of those flat £10 upgrades, fair enough, but if this is another Last of Us situation they're just taking the mick.
What a time to be alive, the generation of the remaster continues. I wonder if this will be a $70 launch title for the ps5 pro (only available digitally obviously) 😉
@Yousef- It's popular but people act really weird around it, like it's being milked even though there's only two main games in the series and a VR spin-off.
Obviously, seemingly unnecessary remasters like this don't exactly help, though.
What a pathetic generation it is...
It'll be interesting to see whether if it brings the graphics more in line with Forbidden West.
Also Sony's remasters tended to add something extra on like Ghost of Tsushima had an expansion, Death Stranding had new items a new mission and a race track. While TLOU2 got a roguelike mode, so I wonder if HZD gets anything.
Well, that’s stupid as hell.
Let me guess, it will be "best to play on PS5 Pro"
I hope Sony remasters Astro Bot soon, I really want to play it but the game is already 12 days old. I don't want to play such an outdated game
I know people will be having tantrums about this but I don't see what the problemo is. As it says in the article, it's perfectly playable as a PS4 port so if you've got it you can keep playing that version. It's not like Hermen Hulst is coming to your house and burning your copy.
Adding a PS5 that looks slightly nicer or whatever, maybe keeping it in line with Forbidden West, new trophy list and everything - I gotta be honest, I'm in. I know I'm part of the problem - and Sony's ideal customer - but I have absolutely no problem buying games I really like again and I really like Horizon.
I'm also totally into getting the platinum in a game I enjoyed a second time - I got the platinum on Elden Ring, Yakuza Like A Dragon, Gaiden, Infinite Wealth on PS5 and then went back and got it on PS4. I'll get this and do it again.
Thats PS big release for 2025
@PaperAlien And even that wouldn’t be true, with a PC version releasing in the presumably same time window.
Can't wait for this to be the focus of the next presentation alongside Fairgame$ and Marathon.
It is what it is. I love Zero Dawn, easily my top PS4 first-party game, but it's just too soon and is easily playable.
I'm sure some people missed it the first time, and I hope this remaster is a treat for them.
I'm sure fans of a Lovecraft inspired action game will take this well.
If its a £10 upgrade path, maybe - not sure.
This series has always seemed good, but not great, unlike series like GOW (the new games from 2018, not the old), and the Spider man games, which i would snap up another game of tomorrow.
Perhaps it'll have a ray tracing mode that will drop the fps to sub-PS4 levels. Wonder if Aloy will get that god-awful 'just eaten Ready Brek' glow round her again?
This generation sucks on a level I didn't think I'd see. PS3 to PS4 remasters was warranted due to hardware issues but this just sucks.
@johncalmc I think people (myself included) have more of an issue with resources being taken away from other new games/IP.
Instead of a PS5 remaster of this which still looks great on PS4 and is backward compatible the dev teams responsible could have spent those man hours on something new. Maybe help naughty dog, sucker punch etc with their output?
Oh no. The Lego game made me think that Sony hadn’t actually lost their collective minds and greenlit a remake, but unfortunately they did. A reimagining of the original game for the Lego audience is one thing, but a full remake is quite another.
So we have TLoU and TLoU II, Uncharted 4/LL, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, Until Dawn, and now HZD. Surely God of War (2018) is next?
Edit: Also absolutely bonkers that Bloodborne isn’t on the PS5 Remake list.
Remaster or remake, one is a full price game, the other probably a 5 to 10 pound upgrade.
This getting to be a joke now. Why are resources being used to remaster games like this??
I dunno about this.
My paranoid Brain thinks this is because PS6 will ONLY be back compatible with PS5 games not PS4, leaving the big first party games on old gen boxes.
@Th3solution And yet what we're waiting for is LBP 1 & 2, Motorstorm, WipeOut, Modnation Racers....
PS4, PS4 Pro, PC, PS5 Patch upgrade, PS5 Remaster, PS5 Pro boost...
How many ways do they need to improve this game ffs 😂 even if it was just one person working on this it's a waste of resources imho
@get2sammyb It does make a bit of sense when you look at it this way.
An Horizon series was in the works till unforseen circumstances happened. So this would have been a product to sell next to it.
It's also an opportunity to give younger developers a chance on a bigger project rather then throwing them in at the deep end.
And it fills up gaps in their release schedules.
"Waste of resources" people really have become experts at how to run multiple games studios now. I guarantee that these remasters wouldn't make new games come any quicker. I mean we just had Astro Bot with Lego Horizon coming in November, so this idea that we're starved of new games has no merit.
If it’s a $10 upgrade then I’ll probably get it, but otherwise this would be another totally useless move by a Sony that seems hellbent on NOT listening to their customers. I could see the Lego game outselling a nothing but new paint remaster if it’s a full price remaster. Sony’s going to have to learn the hard way with bombs like Concord and inevitably the Until Dawn remake.
Curious to see if kid Aloy still looks like off-brand Chucky.
If they are going to remaster stuff then where is Killzone or Resistance? Hell at this point I'd even jump on a Haze remake...
Yeah definitely not interested in more Horizon especially a remaster lol.
You know what there’s a perfectly playable version on ps5 and that runs at 60 fps at that so I would tell people just like with the pro to shut the f**k up with all the whining. If people want the remaster with better graphics and whatever bells and whistles and a more powerful ps5 that’s their choice so what the hell does it matter to anyone else what those people want to spend their money on when they have perfectly playable and capable products to use. I almost bet it’s people who don’t have the money to spend on those things so they lash out and take it out on people who do and that’s just pathetic . I would love a a Ferrari and a mansion but l’ll never have those in my life but I don’t begrudge or hate on people who do because I just content myself with what I do have. I would rather be like that than someone who is perpetually miserable and whiny and try to make other people feel miserable
@Nepp67 came to an article about horizon though didn’t you
It will probably be like Last Of Us Part 1, no upgrade path, just shell out 70€ or more to play it again. Sony has become so so greedy this generation.
@cuttlefishjones Would take longer due to there been multiple games and will probably generate less profit since those IPs are much less popular then Horizon.
@Zeke68 TLOU2 was a remake whereas this is a remaster so really it should have an upgrade price.
Hmm. Not sure about this one. If there’s a cheap upgrade option then it’s nice to have the best version of the game for the library in case I ever want to go back to it but if they want full price then that’s a bit bananas. On the plus side, hopefully this means a state of play is incoming!
Huge backlog of games i haven't played and want to buy (astrobot,aw2,warhammer etc). Zero time to revisit remasters. I made the mistake with tlou2 and i never booted the game once.
Sony, give me a reason to buy the Pro, I dare you.
If only this would happen to Bloodborne....
How exciting.
The existence of this remaster is concerning.
No console except the original $599 PS3 has full backwards compatibility for more than 1 previous generation (Xbox's backwards compatibility approach for original Xbox and Xbox 360 games on XB1/Series X|S are only partial with lots of games lost in the process). Is this remaster perhaps an indication that while PS6 will be able to play PS5 games, it won't be able to play PS4 games? Push Square did report about PS6 decisions happening in 2022 which is when rumours of the remaster started appearing.
Already played it twice, then I lost interest in the series with forbidden west. So, hard pass even if the upgrade is free (and it won't be knowing Sony's greed)
Unlikely I would buy it as I have already played the original, but I also wouldn't select the over inflammatory "Absolutely not, I've played it before" option as it seems to extreme.
If the company wants to update it to bring it in line with the sequel for newer players then I have no issue with that. Same with TLOU2, I have not played it yet so if I were to buy it, I like that I have the option of getting it at a newer standard.
Much like anything if you want it buy it, if you don't then just move along.
They really should just have called this the PS5 port so that people on the internet won’t lose their mind and be unable to use simple logical thinking and consider the possibility that this game probably took less than 1% of the total resources that would be needed to make a new game. It’s not an either/or situation, it’s purely additive. Just ignore it if it’s not for you(it’s primarily for new players who want to buy “Ps5 games” not old PS4 games, need that white box)
If there is an upgrade path for $10 or less, I'm interested.
The only positive here is that the ESRB lists it as "Remastered" rather than remake, which gives me hope it could a €10 upgrade path. A remake would surely be full price, and completely unnecessary.
I think your voting options are a bit silly - what about people that like the game, but don't need a re-master. I would have thought that was the most obvious option (given the constant comments on HZD remasters).
I don't mind remasters/ remakes but I would prefer God of War Original remaster or remake over this.
If Sony tried to do as Nintendo which almost brought every single title from Wii U to Switch. Well, Nintendo did that because Wii U didn't perform well and a lot of people skipped it. I don't think that's the case with PS4!!!!
@get2sammyb the "industry plant" allegations, which feel a little silly.
I think Horizon is a bit like the Avatar movies. People online love to dunk on them, but there's a very large, quiet audience for the series.
It's kind of a sad reminder of the state and problems with the AAA game industry that the quickest way to get titles out with top draw graphics is to remaster 7 yr old games that are still playable even now.
Whilst its not really a big deal to me personally, I still don't get the reason for it. Firstly, everyone that has played it is more than likely to have played it on PC or PS4/5 already. It's been cheap or given away multiple times across platforms. It was also a good looker of a game even on PS4 so that improvements will be the sort that will be for enthusiasts only.
I just don't get why you wouldnt remaster classic titles that people are screaming for - like, obvs, Bloodborne. That has a huge cult following, 10 yr anniversary is coming up and PC gamers would all buy it day one.
@get2sammyb ok - so there's 2 main games, 2 DLC's (the second was treated like a half game... given that it was PS5 only), a VR game, a lego game (about to be released), a lego set, a Multiplayer game (imminent... maybe), a mobile game (supposedly)... a netflix series (recently canned)... and god knows what else (edit: of course - I forgot the PC version). I think it's fair to say that Sony is milking the franchise for all its worth. The funny thing is - at least IMHO - the game has been steadily going downhill in terms of quality of story writing; and Aloy would have to be one of the most characterless and bland protagonists of any Sony game. AND I DID REALLY LIKE THE FIRST GAME... just it started to feel like they had ... well... jumped the shark. It is however built from one of their most amazingly good engines.
I didnt vote as my answer wasnt listed. I enjoyed the game but dont feel the need to play it again.
On a side note @get2sammyb is there any news on Broken Sword reforged? Due for release tomorrow but still only "announced" on the ps5 store with no pre order or pricing. You guys heard anything?
Still my favourite Sony exclusive and much better than its sequel, in my opinion.
Sony have the resources to remaster Wild Arms, Syphon Filter, Infamous, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Folklore, Forbidden Siren, Puppeteer, Rule of Rose, The Getaway, Killzone or any of their games from PS1-PS3, PSP, and Vita era that not yet have a remaster. Heck, they can contact 3rd party like Capcom and funded remaster of Onimusha 2/3, Breath of Fire, Viewtiful Joe, Dino Crisis, or whatever.
But no. They or my big guess is Hermen Hulst, decided to remaster Horizon: Zero Dawn, a 7 years old PS4 game that still looks great and can be played on PS5! Doesn't makes any fking sense🙄
I'm definitely not gonna get this remaster since i already own HZD steelcase edition which i bought it on day 1. And then Sony gave Greatest Hits that include Frozen Wild for free with Play At Home initiative.
@mariomaster96 well with Sony, you can never tell if they're going to remaster the game after 12 days, or remove it from ever existing. Then again... I just read a new rumour. Concord Remastered in-coming!
The PS5 gen simply can't handle any more new PS Studios creations, please do more remasters of the same old games !
Cant wait to get the PS6, so I can play the re-re-remasters - yey!
Mmm not a very big investment for Sony money wise... A tv show is coming i believe...smart move to remaster part 1. It worked for last of us as well.
People on this site seem to forget we are the minority by far.
Also i get really tired with the doom and gloom surrounding every darn thing Sony does. It is so overblown.
I need to have the physical PS5 version of this. Maybe not at launch but I will get it at some day.
I liked the story in the first game way better than the sequel. Probably in my all time top 5 stories for games.
I understand that they made a sequel, but storywise the first game was perfect and didn't need another chapter to expand the story.
@AdamNovice @get2sammyb
Adam gets it. Sony have recently said they want to expand the IPs etc. so it would have been done to coincide. Bit like the last of us.
But the internet likes to lose its mind over something they can ignore.
Free upgrade or £10 upgrade path or I'm definitely not interested.
I realise this was probably because of the Netflix show that fell through, they were most likely almost done with the remaster before that happened but without the show it makes this remaster even more pointless than it already was.
I have the PS4 game but never really played it that much...so not sure I care.
@WizzNL The game already released on PC in 2020 so it's not like the previous remasters/remakes that came to PS5/PC.
Hopefully it's like tlous 2 and there's a 10 dollar upgrade option. I expect to see more remasters for gow 2018 and days gone to tie into the tv/movie adaptations.
Sony Remade TLOU 1 ready for the TV series, they remastered uncharted around the time the film launched and so I can only guess this game is getting remastered due to the (now cancelled) Horizon TV show.
Apparently the show has been cancelled but if Sony have spent money and time on the remaster then they will still want to release it.
This will be another opportunity for Sony to show us the power of the PS5PRO, they dropped the ball on the first chance, so maybe they learned something.
Looking forward to it, I hope there will be an upgrade option.
Also a good pick for people who never played it before.
Would I like to see other titles remastered. For sure, just in case anyone missed it, I would drop everything for a SOCOM II multiplayer remake.
However we should not forget that new gamers come in and for them it’s great to be able to play the best version of this fantastic game.
The more people that play this so Guerilla designs the next one more like Zero Dawn and far less like Forbidden West, the better. HFW was a gotdamm slog. The fact this series went from one of the most streamlined, satisfying open world action games to one of the most boring and bloated messes in only one iteration is a travesty of game design.
Good to show off how you don't need to compromise fidelity or performance on ps5 plus... my goodness Sony, you're pathetic these days
@MFTWrecks thank you... my sentiment exactly. Though I think the trajectory for HZD3 is pretty well locked in, and incoming. I'm not sure if it's Hermen's influence or not, but I'm sure that Sony will just double, then triple down on the HZD and it's current bloated (and bland) direction.
Great game, completely unecessary remaster/remake. Much more interested in the Lego game as at least it's something new.
Back when this was first mentioned I was relatively relaxed about the idea as no one is obliging people to buy it. At that time it was with an assumption that it would launch around other new first party titles - but that currently is not the case and this will only fuel the perception that sony has nothing new to offer and is trying to wring money out of people for old rope.
Perception currently is that Sony is predominantly investing in remakes and live service. This generation we've seen Last of Us pt 1 and 2, the Uncharted collection, Until Dawn, Spiderman remastered, Ghost of Tsushima directors cut, Death Stranding Directors Cut, Demons Souls - I'm sure there are others I haven't mentioned.
This cannot be what they have to show at a State of Play. They need to be showcasing something new to show they still have ideas in the tank.
I recognise Sony is trying to branch out into multiple entertainment ventures like TV and movies, and so this is another venture to attract in new players (likely switch players who try the lego game and want to experience more), but it's hard to justify the need for this when the PS4 version runs great as it is
@Dodoo I get that because any time spent on this is time that could have been spent on something else, but I don't know, I just can't imagine - unless they've really improved it - that this was a massive undertaking.
@jrt87 I felt like Forbidden West was just too samey. Was hoping for an entirely new environment I guess, this felt like just...more.
@jrt87 the remaster is unnecessary to you maybe but to other people it’s not. I also don’t see how this has anything to do with the pro but you want more information on pro that’s cool it’s still two months away you’ll get that information and then can decide whether you want it or not.
As big of a fan as I am of the series, I'm good right now. I've already played the original twice. Maybe if I get the urge to play it yet again and the remaster is really cheap, but no way I'm supporting this anywhere near release.
@armondo36 i thought it’s environment was different enough with what they added not to mention almost everything else about it was better than Zero Dawn
@AdamNovice As i wrote, I talked about part 1. Remake, nah, more of a remaster I'd say.
Edit: Last of us Part 1 would cost me 899 swedish krona (right now on PS Store). Thats 66.85£ or 88.31$.
I bought both PS3 day one and PS4 day one and now I need to pay full price again if I want it native on PS5. Never gonna happen. Don't support the greed when Sony don't support their most loyal customers like me.
Edit 2 I could actually upgrade PArt 2 for 105 swedish krona. About 10€... Why not the first?!
@dark_knightmare2 how can this remaster be "necessary" to anyone though? Once again - it's a remaster of a perfectly good game when played at 60FPS on a PS5 patched game. I get the 'people don't need to buy it' argument; but when Sony are putting out only 1 first party game a year... but seemingly handfuls of remasters.... I think THAT's the reason why people are upset or annoyed.
PS6 will have zero new games, only remasters of PS5 games, and still people would buy it.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Is "the same game you played a few years ago, but a bit shinier" really expanding an IP in any meaningful way, though?
The problem here is that, far from "losing our minds", for the most part we're ambivalent. We're not annoyed or angry at Sony, but we're not excited either. We just don't care for or about the product, and that's arguably a worse outcome.
I will buy this because I love horizon that much but it still doesn’t make much sense at all
@PuppetMaster I was thinking that PS5 would be a great platform for Heavenly Sword however isn't the IP owned by Ninja Theory ?
Infamous I would buy in a heartbeat if all the games got a remaster
If it's the same ten quid upgrade as Legacy of Thieves and TLoU Part 2 I'll happily take it.
If they do an upgrade path for 10 euro / 10 USD like they did the Last of Us Part 2, I’d def buy day one
Possibly one of the most unnecessary remasters ever ...cash grab at its finest
@crossbit yet when this went into production there was a tv series for Netflix/amazon or wherever.
So yes just like The last of us they were releasing a game alongside it.
Potentially getting those who hadn’t played it but watched the show to go out and buy the ps5 version.
If people are totally ambivalent they can ignore it. Just like they can the pro or one of the many games that get released each week that they don’t play or complain about.
I never liked it anyway, so I'm not all that fussed by it, but we are gonna get to the stage shortly where we are remastering games before they a even released.
Bet it looks super amazing as a launch game for the shiny new £800 console tho
@Ypmud Nope Sony owns the Heavenly Sword IP and I'd love to see it return in a remake or at least a remaster. If they don't want to do it themselves hopefully they let someone license the IP like they just did with Freedom Wars.
@Ashkorsair Thank you for saying so mate. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only sane person left in the world, but you've reminded me the sane people are not the shouty obnoxious types who inhabit these pages.
This gen is disastrous. Yet another unnecessary remake to add to the pile.
Everytime I see Guerrilla’s name and it's not followed by any sort of mention to Killzone, I go into a deep despression
I'll stick with the free PS4 version from a couple of years ago that they gave away.
They should remaster everything, it's basically free money from the hardcore PlayStation audience.
I'm tired, boss.
I'm tired of what Sony has become.
I feel they are using the remasters to fill gaps in between their larger releases (if they ever come that is).
Usually by this point in the game generation we are seeing the big games that all the studios have been working on. Showing off what the console can really do!
It has been a strange generation....
@Th3solution don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll remake the remakes once ps6 drops by
@mariomaster96 I have checked out your responses I havent seen many positive ones. Im glad Ninty never remaster/ remakes any games.
Every Zelda game is rereleased every generation or Pokemon/Mario yeah also so little remasters or remakes. Also the first company that locked a digital game away to inflate the price.
@Oram77 If its anything like the last Killzone then I hope the series stays dead the PS4 game was terrible the first game I could not be bothered to even finish the campaign. Maybe if it's like the 3rd entry I'll bite.
@Flaming_Kaiser Most of my responses are jokes, my friend
@PuppetMaster wow it’s always a pleasure seeing someone mention The Getaway.
Just something to think about - First Party PS5 Exclusives (not including PSVR2 - of which there is 1):
2020:
PC Horizon Zero Dawn (PORT)
PS5 Astro's Playroom (pack-in)
PS5 Demon Souls (REMAKE?) * (2nd party at release)
PS5 Spider-Man REMASTERED
PS4/PS5 Miles Morales
2021:
PS5 Returnal * (2nd party at release)
PS5 Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
PC Days Gone (PORT)
PS4/5 Ghost of Tsushima DC (REMASTERED)
PS5 Death Stranding REMASTERED (strictly 2nd party)
2022:
PC God of War (2018) (PORT)
PS5 Uncharted Legacy of Thieves (REMASTERED)
PS4/5 Horizon Forbidden West
PC Spider-Man REMASTERED (PORT)
PC Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves (REMASTERED/PORT)
PS4/5 Gran Turismo 7
PS5 The Last of Us Part 1 (REMAKE)
PC Miles Morales (PORT)
PS4/5 God of War Ragnarok
2023:

PS5 Spider-Man 2
2024:
PS5 The Last of Us Part 2 (REMASTERED)
PC Ghost of Tsushima DC (PORT)
PS5 Concord (REMOVED)PS5 Astro Bot
Summary of First Party Output over approx 4 years of PS5:
4 PS4/5 originals
4 PS5 originals (1 deleted from existence and not counted; though Playroom most probably could count as the 5th game)
7 Remakes/Remasters (note: 6 if you exclude DS)
10 PC Ports of older PS4/5 games
Note: At least 2 more remakes/remasters to be released imminently. AND OF COURSE - this doesn't include the many more 2nd party exclusives.... which seems to be Sony's approach now. It also doesn't include MLB The Show, as these are cross-platform. It also doesn't include where 2nd party studios have worked on Sony IP (like Sack Boy / Helldivers). I also didn't include DLC (eg Burning Shores, or the Valhalla DLC)
The scary thing - in the last 4 years, PlayStation has added only a single new IP (Returnal) which was acquired... and the game that shall now never be mentioned again. I also remain unconvinced that the push to remaster/remake/port has not impacted original game releases.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Cross platform are you taking in account wow then Ninty is really in trouble. The start of the PS5 isn't a good comparison to anything with COVID and the shortages of parts.
@Flaming_Kaiser not worried about PC specific ports (ACTUALLY... I most probably should adjust... hold on)
Excited to play this again with all the improvements 🙂🙂🙂
@Spanky hahaha she totally did look like that 🔪
If it’s free or 10$ upgrade I will gladly think of replaying it. Forbidden West has got to be one of the most spectacular games I played
The good part about this news is that this means they are probably testing/implementing new tech. It was the same with Spidey Remastered.
The not so good part is that they probably will gonna charge us.
@get2sammyb Come on, you really think current Sony would give away a remaster for free? ZERO CHANCES it happens, at most we’ll get a $10 upgrade but like this is the most unnecessary remaster ever in history…
And I do think that Sony is trying to milk this franchise a bit too much, already a couple of games with DLCs and complete editions, this remaster, Lego Horizons, the sequel to Forbidden West and the leaked multiplayer game.
Love Horizon, so will definitely play it, if they do sell it, hope its not more than $10
Games that are actually new?
At least it's not a live service game. 🤷
I absolutely adore this franchise but.......why does this exist? We can already play it on PS5 at 60fps what else is there to do? Again insert typical "WHY NOT BLOODBORNE!!!???" comment here
This is the most pointless Remaster so far. If ever there was a game that doesn't need a Remaster it's this one. The game already looks amazing even yet on both a PlayStation and a PC. If it's a free upgrade then sure but I know that won't happen.
@Ypmud No, NT didn't own Heavenly Sword IP and yeah Infamous 1 & 2 remaster would be nice.
@Yousef- Despite some flaws, i really enjoyed The Getaway. It's like GTA but took place in UK and also reminds me a bit of Guy Ritchie's movie called Snatch.
I'm still sad that Sony cancelled The Getaway 3 and Eight Days
I love this franchise but have absolutely no interest in this. The game still looks great on my setup, I see no need for a remaster.
@Yousef- Lol, I wouldn’t doubt it.
Although, I do think the theory about PS6’s backwards compatibility being limited to the PS5 library is an interesting one. It would explain some of the motivations for doing all these PS4 Remakes. If we give Sony the benefit of the doubt, then they are doing this in preparation for next gen. If we’re being cynical, then it’s gotta be for a cash-grab and Sony is creatively bankrupt. 😅
I usually try to give the benefit of the doubt.
Another less critical theory is that it’s simply an attempt to have a synergistic release with their other multimedia products and shows. There is a market of people who will be exposed to the Lego game, the MMO, and whatever TV show comes out and will want to play the game that started it all. Sure they can just buy the PS4 game and play it, but many of them will pay top dollar for a PS5 version instead.
As for me, I doubt I’ll play the game again anytime soon. Maybe on PS6. I still have yet to play Forbidden West! I need to get on that.
Do we really need this.
Would rather these studios spend time making new games, even if this has been outsourced, they got have had that studio helping do something new.
Quite an odd remaster since the game already looks great on both PS5 and PC.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare
Wow that sort of sums it up badly.
And I moan about Xbox and Nintendo.
Has been a joke this generation overall.
All I can do is hope for a better next four years.
Situation sounds similar to the PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima - mostly unnecessary unless they're trying to court a significant number of newcomers to the franchise. Both of these games' PS4 versions run on PS5 at 60fps and look sublime on a 4K TV.
I think it's a bit cynical to have another 'remaster' this gen. That said, it could open the game up for newcomers to the series, and it's not much of a gamble from the dev team insomuch as it's cheaper to upscale a popular game rather than roll the dice on a completely new IP. Hopefully they've taken this chance to stop Aloy talking so much! The hand-holding in this - and it's sequel were beyond frustrating for me. So much so, I play with the dialogue turned off! Rant over!!
Well, there is one game confirmed for the rumored State of Play… Im so excited for the €800 RemasterStation 5 Pro…
@Yousef- the sequel, forbidden west, only sold about 1/3 of zero dawn's 24m copies. if that isn't damning for sony, i don't know what is. the IP is certainly in trouble and i wouldn't be surprised to learn that the lego game was designed with the sole intent of boosting awareness of the IP so that the third mainline entry doesn't fail to meet sales expectations again.
The market for this is PC gamers and new PS5 owners. Us who've already played it aren't the main targets.
It's an excellent game, I much preferred it to the sequel in fact- which was excessively convoluted in terms of combat and gear, and had a story that was nothing but mcguffin-chasing, padded out and forgettable. Looked gorgeous of course, and still fun.
@AdamNovice You are an absolute trooper. I don’t know if you work for Sony or not but you absolutely need to be in their communications department. You are far better than anything they’ve got.
Let’s not kid ourselves: this will be priced the same as the TLOU PS5 Remasters. I truly doubt they will allow an upgrade for $10 for this.
sound of head banging on wall furiously
4 years into the generation and a whole new "luxury" "deluxe" "premium" "enthusiast" "not for everyone but for people who enjoy caviar and champagne on their yacht with their elite plastic gaming box" chunk of hardware, and we're doing it all to relive 2017 in higher fidelity? The game's like $12 this week on Steam/GoG. Looks great without mods. Does extraordinary things with mods. Even runs in VR, modded. And we're going to "remaster it" for $60? $70? How do you "remaster" a 7 year old game other than just cranking the visuals up (that's free, included for $12 on PC) for the privilege of running them on better hardware for full price? Do you need to redo the models and textures? What was wrong with them before, because they look excellent already.
Everything, and I mean, everything, is wrong with this industry.
@get2sammyb that would be difficult though as soon gave the complete edition away during ze cvid years.
I see them reselling it as new because they updated the game for a modern audience.
@NEStalgia actually bought the horizon complete edition for 8 bucks 3 months ago to test out my new gaming pc.
@The_ghostmen Haha, yeah, I think I remember seeing that sale, on GoG, no less, DRM-Free (which is shocking from Sony.) I was almost tempted because I love the game, but I already have a platinum on PS, so I can't see replaying it much as I love it. Even for $8 lol
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare As someone who absolutely adores HZD, I rushed through HFW last year and then just finished Burning Shores (because I bought it and figured I may as well see where the story goes/went), I cannot fathom for the life of me what people see in HFW that makes it better than HZD. The downgrades are numerous.
I still hold HZD up as the second best "Ubisoft-style" open world game behind only Ghost of Tsushima. It was clear, lean (by open world game design standards) and fun af.
HFW took all that and threw it out the window and padded the playtime with aimless busywork, horrendously boring loot grinding, and absolutely atrociously aggravating combat. Not to mention, it has some of the jankiest controls in all of modern gaming. Aloy turns like a tank and gets caught on countless pieces of environment constantly AND the climbing is so awfully designed I almost stopped playing it before I got to the "full" world. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.
I'm glad I played it. At least I have an informed opinion on the title, and now I can wait to see how H3 stacks up. If it leans more towards 2's design, I'll just skip it and pour one out for one of the most promising, but poorly implemented evolutions of an IP I've ever personally witnessed.
@dark_knightmare2 Yup to express my disinterest in Horizon like 51% of the other people who voted lol.
@OldGamer999 I''m sure that COVID had a lot to do with delays; and I suspect that Sony Mgt thought the remake/remaster route was a low-risk (even if low pay-off) path to keep games coming out, so that the 'silence' didn't become deafening. The counter that has emerged is that Sony doesn't need first party when they can just buy timed exclusivity... and I think that's another list for another day. Either way - timed exclusives might be 'marketable' but the Sony badge of quality was what people were dedicated to.
I think this need to meet Sony standards has been their rod, because it also has meant they're (IMO) too frightened to release something that isn't polished to the nth degree; where every edge is now rounded, where (IMO again) they've started to lose the forest for the trees in terms of quality and fun experiences. That's why people have gravitated so much to AstroBot (I hope Sony doesn't get the message that we all just need more nostalgia.... when the message should be more focused and fun gaming experiences).
Sony may "win the console war" (which doesn't really exist) - but it HAS also lost it's identity as a producer of great gaming (in lieu of impressively made games). And producing one "tentpole" game a year (as they recently stated was their goal), and filling the rest with remasters/live-service was never the right direction. The hardest part of the list for me was the fact that all the games barring Returnal (which was bought) are sequels/remasters. I hope Sony hasn't forgotten how to make new games.
@Nepp67 yeah because internet polls have ever had any bearing on how a game will do lmao. Tlou part 2 remastered went through the same thing earlier this year and guess what it still sold well
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare idk it could have new accessibility settings, better animations to go along with graphics, ray tracing who knows because we haven’t got any information to say one way or another. It’s no different than being a movie fan like I am and buying the same movie two or three times on the same format because it got a new transfer,a new surround mix, steelbook or physical swag. Sony provided their consumers Helldivers 2,Tlou part 2 remastered,Stellar Blade,Rise of the Ronin,MLB the Show,FF 7 Rebirth and just two weeks ago the highest rated game this year and goty front runner Astrobot with Silent Hill 2,Until Dawn remake and Lego Horizon still to come along with all the third party multiplats. So one remaster and one remake among all of that isn’t a lot and they’ve delivered a hell of a lot more gaming content for their customers than the other big two have for their fanbases so you can miss me with this ridiculous outrage over a leaked remaster that just like Tlou part 2 earlier this year will probably have a 10 upgrade and will sell well.
This is getting comical at this point. What about new IP's, what about new games in literally any series at this point?
What does Sony have for the existing players? These Remasters and Remakes are only for two groups of people: Shills that buy anything from PS Studios no matter what, and new players that didn't have a PS3 /or PS4.
What outrage are you talking about?
If they include The Frozen Wilds DLC then I'm in. Loved this game.
If they offer an upgrade for £10 - £15 then maybe I'd bite as I really enjoyed the first game when I played through it when I got my ps5. I still have not played through the 2nd game yet so maybe I should. In fact looking at my backlog I should really play through a lot of the games that are stock piled..a winter mission approaches me I think.
@jrt87 astro bot remaster
@get2sammyb Unfortunately it's in the process of being milked, considering that, aside from the existing 3 games, they already released separate PC versions of the first 2 games, they have in the pipeline a Lego game, and a TV show, and an eventual 3rd main game. Not to mention Remasters like this one here, DLC's, PS5 Pro patches, eventual PS6 Re-Remasters because... why not... etc.
@NEStalgia may i ask you nestalgia.
did you like horizon 2.
i couldn't get into that game to much talking.
horzion 1 a liked more then breath of the wild.
@Toot1st nah they would not do that within the first month at least wait a month and 2 days.
@dark_knightmare2 Hey bud, I don't care if it does well, I'm just expressing my opinion just like everyone else is. Grow a pair if you can't handle that.
@The_ghostmen I've bought it twice, once on PS5, once on PC, and still haven't played it yet! I've heard from a lot of people that it's beautiful but a worse game than the first, so even though I love the original enough that it's one of my only platinums, I keep putting off playing hfw.
That said, I intend to play at least part of it modded for VR on PC so I think seeing the world in full 3d might bias me to like it more than I might have when I do
But why though, we already got 60 fps on ps5, and pc already got the game with whatever resolution and framerate according to the pc specs, I don't think there's any person that looks at horizon zd and think, "hmm, I need More graphics" 😅
Sure, I'll buy it if it's a $10 upgrade. I would enjoy playing an overhaul of the game on my PS5, but only if it's a $10 entry.
While I've no inherent problem with the idea of a HZD remakester, it's simply not a game I really have much interest in revisiting, having sunk 50+ hours and 100%ed all the side quests, there are so many more games still on my list I'd rather devote my time to
I would almost be for this in a way, if we knew the trilogy would end on the same platform, so we have Zero Dawn, Forbidden West and the ending all on PS5. Right now, with development times, I'm thinking this is a stop gap for Horizon 3 on PS6.
My interest is minimal for an upgrade though, I played it to death on PS4.
I’m going to support Sony on PC so I will get it eventually.
Never in a million years will I understand what people see in this series.
It’s the tried and true Ubisoft formula, but with even more generic design.
Easy response to this. I have no interest in it! Played and platinum’d both games. But, for those who’ve not played the series. Great time to jump in!
@Kelrics90 Sony just released a new IP that crashed and burned so badly that it’s the stuff of legend. There was also a mew game that’s not a GaaS recently (Astro Bot). It’s not like Sony can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.
