Hello Games has today revealed another new feature for No Man's Sky, arriving in its next PS5, PS4 update: fishing. Due to the game's community really taking to the recently implemented water technology in the Worlds Part I content update — with fans posting pictures of themselves relaxing by the waterside and fan art depicting space explorers fishing — the team has set out to make it a reality. The Aquarius patch allows you to fish, track what you catch, and dive into deeper waters for rare finds. It's out today on PS5, PS4 for free.

As detailed in the trailer above, you can cast your fishing rod out across a body of water alone or with friends, and catch what pulls on your line. There'll be fish as well as messages in bottles, with traps also able to be set on the water's surface. New cooking recipes let you turn your catches into food while a new Fishing Records tab in the pause menu tracks everything you've found. A new set of Trophies is tied to the mechanic, and another Expedition lets players compete for the biggest catch.

Sean Murray provided further context to the Aquarius update, saying: "Our last update was 'Worlds Part I' just a few weeks ago. It resulted in our biggest player numbers in over 5 years. Eight years in and we feel so lucky to have so many folks still care about this game we love. It gives our tiny team energy, making us want to pour more into the No Man’s Sky universe."

"Something folks really loved in the Worlds update was the new water technology, tons of players were posting videos of themselves just chilling at the water’s edge. One piece of fan art in particular stopped us in our tracks, of a player lazily fishing from their wing of their boat. That inspired our next update AQUARIUS — where we finally add fishing to No Man’s Sky!" You can learn more in the development update post from Hello Games.
