Hello Games has today revealed another new feature for No Man's Sky, arriving in its next PS5, PS4 update: fishing. Due to the game's community really taking to the recently implemented water technology in the Worlds Part I content update — with fans posting pictures of themselves relaxing by the waterside and fan art depicting space explorers fishing — the team has set out to make it a reality. The Aquarius patch allows you to fish, track what you catch, and dive into deeper waters for rare finds. It's out today on PS5, PS4 for free.
As detailed in the trailer above, you can cast your fishing rod out across a body of water alone or with friends, and catch what pulls on your line. There'll be fish as well as messages in bottles, with traps also able to be set on the water's surface. New cooking recipes let you turn your catches into food while a new Fishing Records tab in the pause menu tracks everything you've found. A new set of Trophies is tied to the mechanic, and another Expedition lets players compete for the biggest catch.
Sean Murray provided further context to the Aquarius update, saying: "Our last update was 'Worlds Part I' just a few weeks ago. It resulted in our biggest player numbers in over 5 years. Eight years in and we feel so lucky to have so many folks still care about this game we love. It gives our tiny team energy, making us want to pour more into the No Man’s Sky universe."
"Something folks really loved in the Worlds update was the new water technology, tons of players were posting videos of themselves just chilling at the water’s edge. One piece of fan art in particular stopped us in our tracks, of a player lazily fishing from their wing of their boat. That inspired our next update AQUARIUS — where we finally add fishing to No Man’s Sky!" You can learn more in the development update post from Hello Games.
Will you be setting aside some time to do a spot of fishing in No Man's Sky and having a good chill session? Let us know in the comments below.

They are brilliant at telling a story. I seriously doubt everything they show in the video was built in a few weeks. I suspect most if not all of the features was taken from their new game .
I really should jump back into this. Had it on launch, played for a little while and never went back.
This game continues to be incredible. They are way beyond giving away free DLC’s. I would not be hurt if they started asking for a few bucks for them. I love the game the way it was in the beginning. They have done a great job. Thank you.
Unbelievable post-release support yet again.
Sean, you can rest.
Why is every game making me do fishing lol
This is approaching Greatest Game of all Time levels. Sean Murry and Hello Games have transcended GOAT 🐐
This is a proper phoenix from the ashes story there should be a Documentary on how Hello games turned it around.
@AdamNovice lol this is my reaction too, but props to them. I feel like this is a game where it at least makes sense. Now, should fishing in a space faring game still just be a dude with a pole...
I can't even fathom how this could be financially viable for these devs - it's amazing how much they've given away. The game as it is against the original release might as well be a sequel.
@IntrepidWombat because every update they do gets coverage like this, and coverage is free marketing, and marketing brings sales. Simple.
The press love them for a constant drip of stories and in turn the press give them sales. Everyone is a winner.
How do you unlock the fishing log in the discoveries menu because it's definitely not there from the start...?
Fishing — the most overrated mini game.
…Well, maybe in a tie with lock picking.
They did Worlds Part I, so I thought the next update was going to be Part 2 (seems obvious), but then this one comes out of nowhere. Did I miss a road map or something that explains when Part 2 comes or what is next? Sorry if I missed it.
I am extremely disappointed by the lack of fish puns in the article title and comments.
'Plaice... the final frontier'...
I'll get my coat.
@IntrepidWombat I've bought the game on 3 platforms, the last time on steam due to VR and the graphics update. Evergreen Long tail sales from Long term support can't be understated. Is how Skyrim and gta5 do so well forever.
