In an unfortunate snafu, publisher Annapurna Interactive has revealed that physical copies of the PS5 Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition have shipped with the wrong game version on the disc, lacking the Echoes of the Eye expansion. Annapurna is still investigating the situation, but players who can provide proof of purchase will be issued a voucher to redeem it as DLC.
On X, retailer iam8Bit shared the update (thanks, Eurogamer, Happy Birthday!) with the unhappy mishap seemingly affecting all physical copies of the game. It's not something you see very often and is likely a major headache for all involved, especially whoever's job it was to QA those shiny, fresh discs. For the record, all PS4 owners can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game free of charge, while Echoes of the Eye is a paid expansion (and quite good, too).
Can you recall the last time a game shipped with the wrong version on the disc, or is this an anomaly? Did you pick up a copy of Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition on PS5? Provide proof of purchase in the comments section below.

Completed nullifying the reason people wanted a physical version.
I guess it's better than nothing.
I remember the first run of Final Fantasy Tactics Greatest Hits for the PS1 had a bad batch that wouldn't read. It was the first thing I ever ordered online, and we had to return it to an EB Games store in the mall. That's the only time I can recall having an issue with a disc.
@IntrepidWombat I literally got that same game from EB and had no disc in it. Thankfully, I was still at the mall and was eating lunch. Back before malls became the cesspools they are today. Couldn't pay me to step into one.
Yep, picked it up for the Collection (already own it Digital)
Still Sealed, not that it matters, so gonna take it back to EB on Friday and put the $70 towards Astro Bot and the 2 Astro Bot Controllers 👌
Back in my former lifetime of being (ultimately), a games store manager we initially had ps4 copies ship of Saints Row 4(?), ship on release which shipped with the "full" EU version with certain banned Aussie content thanks to our quaint classification rules which even updated saw previously MA15+ games mostly get tagged as R18+!
Don't think I sold any of the offending copies before we got ordered to pull them off the shelves & ship them back, but I imagine a small number slipped out there.
Before my time on release, but also later we couldn't trade in the Hot Coffee ps2 GTA San Andreas even though you needed an Action Replay (not sold by the store),to even access it after that version was recalled.
Honestly how is this type of error even possible, seems someone is in trouble, I mean they had one job lol

Physical over digital any day
**someone mentions Outer Wilds, even in a negative way**
Cool, I'll replay Outer Wilds.
Every game ships with the wrong version on the disc as every game is broken at the point it goes gold!
Day 1 patch to replace multiple GBs of data to fix it and then several other patches later to replace yet more GBs of data.
Small wonder I don't buy games (physical or digital) day one and wait until at least v1.0.3 is available..
@KillerBoy Complete over uncomplete games any day.
Can't they just trade in the disc copy and rebuy the updated version at a later date?
SNAFU doesn't make sense in the first paragraph especially when you prefix it with 'unfortunate' . SNAFU means that the situation is bad, but that this is a normal state of affairs. Clearly, the situation here isn't normal. That's why Push Square is reporting on it.
I don't know if anyone remembers Overblood 2 on the PSX, but the first press of that game had a game-breaking bug that stopped progression.
@EchoRange I do! The second print was like a year or two later as well. I specifically hunted down the second press (it had a different publisher or distributor, with different logos on the discs) just so I had the unbroken version. Such is my devotion to Overblood and Raz Karcy, the greatest videogame protagonist to have ever gone AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!! PIIIIIPOOOO!
(Sorry) 🤣
@GamingFan4Lyf It's worse then nothing it's like someone spitting in your face. You lied about what you are selling do recall and refund. How can you be so dumb as a company.
