I’m not here to tell people what they can and can’t spend their money on, but did anything in that video really spell out $200 worth of improvements? At $700USD I'm left to ask myself: with these mid-cycle upgrades being so expensive, at which point do we console gamers just switch to PC? Buying a new GPU or CPU/RAM is looking to be a cheaper way to get the same gains as buying a Pro console.

On the current sku I have, it has the final fantasy plate's so I don't want to replace them and then be back to square one with an all white looking model plus my pc could do with a CPU upgrade so it's pointless going for this.

Insanity. Sony is so out of touch. Who thought that this presentation was a good idea. You're going to try and sell me on a $700 console with Demon Souls and the last of us to a PS4 game are you f****** kidding me. Oh wait I can have clearer back ground assets like the crowd in the bleachers on the first level of Ratchet and Clank or slightly better looking trees in Spider-Man 2?! Are you serious right now? 60 fps for games I already beat and many of which are several years old or more? Lol nahhh.

Very few people are buying this console to replay these old games that most have completed. The decision to green light revealing this with no new game reveal fully utilizing the hardware or even just a teaser is insanity.

Aside from all that, the price point is just ridiculous. you know they're just fishing again,.... they're going to do the same s*** they did with psvr 2, and honestly all add'l hardware this Gen, and wait until all the few hundred thousand whales and scalpers buy it at the overpriced nonsense before they make it priced what it should be and what it's actually worth if they even ever do that.

At this price without a disk drive ($779.98 total), you aren't even getting people that have been holding off on migrating to this generation to bite. Should have dropped the base ps5 price and make this priced as it should be.

If this machines moves the needle for devs on creating games with 60 - 120 fps (and 60 being the baseline) at 4K, then great. I'll join that party in due course.

But for now, like some have said here, I'll keep my OG PS5 (with its' 2TB extra SSD + 3TB external HD), play the games I have, and see what the PS6 Pro is like.

Ah there wasn't a solid selling point to this at all we've already had numerous current gen re-hashes and the games we've played already have already been great and are far long behind, it's not being integrated with every game I just can't see the point of replaying everything we've played already at that price point, this is more for developers and their future developments, the investments just isn't worth it at this point in my opinion.

Wasn't going to get it before, definitely not getting it at 800 euro.

Maybe it is a blessing I didn't start Final Fantasy Rebirth yet. I'd definitely play it on the Pro when it is updated.

Many of us don't even have the monitors/TVs to really get the most out of the fidelty mode, which is at least partly why 3/4ths of players use performance mode. Making it so we can have the best of both worlds only really matters for those of us with 4K monitors; NOT the giga-sized selling point they think it is

If this would magically turn every game from 30 fps to 60 by machine learning frame addition, or there were a lot of games supporting it in this way, then nice, but this is such a negligible improvement… Performance mode is now a bit more fancy – that's all.

PS4 was a FullHD console and PS4 Pro made it somehow 4K (od 2.5K) for at least some games. Sadly, this is not such improvement

Because I personally don't want to pay for an M.2 that I won't use or need since I'd be transferring my current one.

The only way this is an upgrade for me is if it will actually do 4K 120hz with 4:4:4 color space. (PS5 currently does 4:2:2 when 120hz is enabled)

This whole generation has really shown me how I've aged out of being the main-target demographic for videogames.

As far as I'm concerned, a "pro" upgrade to the current gen is borderline insulting. I can't think of more than 3-4 titles that makes me feel like the generation has even properly left the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X behind.

My PS5 has mostly been gathering dust since I wrapped up FFVII: Rebirth as it is, so at this price with no disc-drive and no killer-app to sell us on it? I'mma give this a pass.

That's insane. I think it will fail ultimately. I don't expect it to sell better than the first VR sold and way less than PS4 pro did. Way less. Not for that price. If you want disk drive that's 900 euros. That's insane. Add another pair of 🎮 and it is 1000, you can buy a PC that's probably similarly capable to run, plus you can upgrade it down the line. Much larger game library and in general just superior all round..

Pricing has done me a favour as I won’t be tempted to get this at launch. Does seem a weird sell too - ton of cash to make existing games run (a little?) better. If they’d have shown off some new / unannounced 1st / 2nd party stuff to show a more compelling case I might have caved.

But this gives the late 2024 Series X space in the market. And of course, the old 5 will see an uplift. Price alone will dictate.

They simply haven't done enough for such a financial leap.

Ok, the 'new' X doesn't have an upgraded GPU, but the graphical increase are not immediately noticeable to my 47 year old eyes.

This will push more players towards the old 5 who were waiting out, and that price does not kill off the 'new' Xbox.

Factor that in with gamepass, your looking at a present under the tree that's pushing 1000$/£ with an extra controller and a couple of games for someone brand new into the ecosystem.

But if you are thinking of selling your old PS5 to put towards the Pro, I think it'll hold it's price quite well as there is such a large price difference between it, and the Pro.

You know what would be really unsurprising...if they charged 10 to 15$£ for the pro unlocks on existing games.

I'm happy to keep my original PS5. That and the Switch OLED are probably my final consoles. It will take some pretty innovative games, to keep me gaming into the future. VR still has a way to go and live service isn't for me. Need some new genres or some really exciting game mechanics.

I would have bit if the system came with a drive as im due some bonus around that time but knowing i will need to buy extra components like the drive and the stand has turned me off the idea completely. I will just stick to my OG ps5. The worrying thing is how much the PS6 is gonna cost. I think the days of console gaming for me are over after this gen because i just cant afford to be dropping up to £1000 on a console.

@GreatAuk Our VAT rate is 20%, so once you add that to the dollar price, the £ price should be around £640. So Sony is still marking the UK up by ~£60/$78 compared to the USA.

I got a ps5 but also went the pc route, which was about 1500 euro, because that gives you a crazy amount of options. Especially when youre into sim racing. Not sure why you'd spent 800 to play the same games at marginally better performance?

@playstation1995 No disc drive unfortunately but you can add one like with the slim, also no stand. You do however get an extra 1TB of storage (2TB drive).

I know the future and the present is on PC, but I don't like to play there. I will get my Switch 2 and see what will be the future, in the end if PC is the only way, I'll just leave from this hobby.

So I guess consoles becoming more and more likes PC is inevitable. Considering more games being multiplatform and companies like Sony or Microsoft saying that exclusives are dying. Then this pricing actually makes sense. Sony didn't even have to announce any new games to sell it, and there are almost no first party exclusive games for 2025-26 that we know of right now. It's still a bit more affordable than PC though.

Early to say but I feel this will not be the same success as PS4 pro at this point of time.

As long as they are still catering to the PS4 (Understandable simply due to its player install base) the PS5 is being held back and not hitting its peak abilities and so neither will the pro. Outside of the few actual PS5 exclusives.

PS4 hardware in the Home still outweighs the PS5 and now they may see a spike in PS5 sales this Christmas as stores/online will be probably doing some deals to see out the stock in order to get the Pro in.

it feels like this entire console cycle is me saying that things cannot possiblly get any worse... and yet they do. sony has yet to deliver a compelling reason to own a base ps5 yet after 4 years.... they won't sell more than 10m of the pros at this price point if the ps4 pro data is anything to go by. console gaming is in a real bad place right now. it is more concerned with the tech arms race of the PC space than making actual games worth a damn. only nintendo will continue to do what matters most i suppose. with the exception of a handful of ps5 targeted games this entire cycle, there really isn't enough there to justify the buy-in.

best to avoid the ps5 altogether and see how the ps6 turns out. if it is fully backwards compatible with ps4/5, has a disc drive, reasonable price and sony goes back to basics of making good games at a reaosnable clip, then i'll bite. until then, 30 years of retro gaming is waiting for me

I'll be selling my standard PS5 along with the still sealed official Spider-Man 2 face plates for another $150-$200 to get the Pro. Not right away, but probably sometime in 2nd quarter of 2025. Don't care about no disc drive because I never used the one on the original PS5. All of my games are digital and the drive doesn't support Dolby Vision for 4K Blu-rays so I have no use for it.

That said, I'd like to see someone build a PC for $700 that has the same or better performance. When LTT did that for the og PS5, the PS5 performed better overall than the PC at the same price.

I thought PlayStation's approach to marketing this is, except for all the accurate leaks which are free, akin to Apple's online unveilings with a slick, convincing video with the 'big three' as the main selling point. All the logical appeals wrapped into their overall pathos make for an on-the-surface enticing offer: to meet developers' wishes for computation which will enhance the fidelity and performance drastically.

I think that if you sell your PS5 and take PS5 Pro in a year when it first discounts in your country/region you could get away with a substantial upgrade for a reasonable price.

Do I want it? No, not right now. I am to dumb to register the differences and are always baffled by people who demand high frame rates. Sure, nobody likes stuttering but my capacity for noticing is just not up to par. And yet, I do like the idea of my console leveling up.

It’s big time sticker shock for a lot of console gamers for sure, but in the age of $600-700 “mid-range” GPU prices, PC gamers have grown accustomed to this sort of pricing

@Tdot8282 Remember the 3DO back in the SNES / Genesis "Console Wars" generation? It was also a great price-to-performance ratio, but no one bought it because of (1) the insane (at the time) price of $500 USD compared to like $150 USD for the 16-bit machines and (2) the game library wasn't anywhere near as compelling as the SNES or Genesis. I can't see Sony manufacturing more than 10 or 15 million of these in the PS5's lifecycle.

Absolutely no, never. Why would I spend 700 on an upgrade with little discernable difference.....but also give up a disc drive? I don't want a separate drive sat next to it adding clutter, it's not the same as adding an extra ssd internally which I have done.
I hope this fails, otherwise discless consoles will be fast tracked.
I defend Sony a lot, I am very loyal and have owned every mainline console (no pro versions), the only other time I've really criticised is their handling of Evolution studios, but this is laughable.

For $700, not only should it include a disc drive, but one that can play discs from every PlayStation generation (PS1-PS5). That, in addition to the upgraded specs announced. I realize it’s a digital world nowadays, but I have 30 years worth of physical games that would likely see more action if there was an all-in-one console solution for playing them. I’m all for the latest and greatest tech but it would be nice to have the option to revisit simpler times when the mood strikes. Astro Bot seems to get it. Maybe he should be running the show.

@SterlingEyes I think we are seeing a tipping point towards more mainstream PC gaming. Steam Deck is fabulous. An OK gaming laptop is £800. I mean one could keep base PS5 and buy a laptop or deck and have change from the £825 Pro.

I think $700 is a fair price given the world economic realities that prevent the PS5 from being reduced in price. $200 over the base PS5 makes sense, but the lack of a disc drive, even though I don't use it, is itself an unacceptable price increase, however.

The separate drive is a genius move on Sony's part from a manufacturing and business point of view, but it is not as consumer-friendly as it appears.

After taxes up here in Canada, this machine will be $1047. It’s a lot of money. But it’s still considerably less money than the $3500 my 4080 laptop cost that I bought earlier this year. And I guarantee most games will run better on the PS5 Pro than my laptop.

@Tdot8282 Agreed. It is after all an optional upgrade for those who want the best performance on console. For me It's about $100 too high for what you get. I think the 2TB SSD is the main culprit for the price. It's so easy to just buy and install an aftermarket M.2 drive to expand the storage I don't see why they upped the internal storage from 1TB to 2.

People online are praising Nintendo for their pricing and can’t wait to see the Super Switch for $400…Nintendo has charged people the same price for a console with 2013 mobile internals…in 2024. It’s highway robbery and when the Super Switch comes out for the same price, they’re going to be praised for doing the same with 2019 mobile internals.

You’re getting a lot more with the PS5 Pro at its price than the Switch or Super Switch but the uncharted territory nature of the pricing of the Pro is making a lot of folks lose perspective on actual value.

I'm so done with consoles. Sony's lost the narrative and this is exactly the direction I thought they'd go. Image PS6! And Xbox drifts from strategy to strategy, with great products but you never know when they make it worse. Consoles are now extortionate, while, even if Nvidia starts gouging harder, AMD is committing to a period of cost competition to buy marketshare, so AMD GPUS are about to be value focused....a good time for budget PC gaming.

The rumors of the Pro are one of the 3 pillars that put me over the edge to just splash out and go back to PC once and for all. But part of me was looking over my shoulder to see if I threw money away and could have stayed with the kind of performance I wanted for way less with a PS5 Pro. Between the base model and the Pro and accessories, you could have built a 4070 Super rig that would run laps around this thing. Or just bought a gaming laptop for a smaller form factor and better performance. It's pure Apple in every way. $1200+stand across the generation to stay current. $1200-1500 for a 4070 rig that beats it and can be modularly upgraded. Sony's not selling value anymore, they're selling brand appeal.

Sony may have just "Done an Xbox" and harmed their future. Another embarrassing product, that will further alienate the console base and migrate them toward open platforms, while also making the next Xbox actually look viable again when it launches likely before PS6, while locking themselves into delaying PS6 longer, or further erode consumer confidence by replacing the $700 pro in a 2 year lifespan like Xbox did with 1X. I’m a PS5 owner and it’s been my favorite console in years, and it’s my primary method for gaming. That said, this PS5 Pro is less compelling than the PSVR 2 which I also bought day 1. The price and no Blu Ray drive?

Maybe in 2 years after more games are optimized for the Pro, and if it’s on sale for $450, then I could see buying one. Otherwise I will just wait for a PS6.

The dollar/sterling parity is disappointing with the dollar currently at 1.30 to the pound. I think some UK retailers will offer some discount on the RRP by Black Friday. Its £800 if you are buying a SECOND PS5. I for one would be interested in trading in my machine and buying a 2nd hand Blu-ray. That in practical terms reduces the cost to £500 for an upgrade.
Sony are being down the line about what this is about - not having to compromise by selecting graphic fidelity over performance. That compromise isn’t so bad, but now there is a premium option to avoid having to make it. I spent over £2k on a high end OLED television because I watch it a lot and I want a great picture. People spend £600 on a vacuum. It’s the same principle. These are not ‘toys’ but high end consumer electronics. And if you want to theoretically save a few bucks, hook your PC up to your TV, faff around with Windows and wait with your fingers crossed hoping Sony will convert its exclusives to your format, go ahead. I’d rather plug-and-play.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but here in Arizona we have a %10 sales tax. So the $700 console, $80 disc drive, and $25 stand actually make this a $900 console when all is said and done.

Last Cyber Monday I bought an ASUS TUF A1 4070 laptop for $900 at Best Buy. That purchase becomes more of a steal by the day.

It's about from 2020-2026 spending $500+$150+ decent size SSD+700+stand+subscriptions+more expensive games, AND for those that value all the games, buying the same on the Xbox side, vs just spending $1200-1600 once in 2023-2024 and getting something that's better than any of the above for the duration.

Yeah, for the masses, the PC isn't always ideal. For the enthusiasts which is who this product is aimed at, the PC is actually the cheaper option. The console's more expensive, you're just paying in installments for 6 years. With interest.

And at $700, you're between $100-300 away from a decent gaming laptop if you don't need a full rig. You can get decent PC gaming for $1k. It's not TOTL enthusiast, but it'll play your games at least as well as a PS5. With more RT. No stand needed.

People seem to look at PC because all the enthusiasts have 4090 rigs costing $3k+ and think that's all there is to PC, or look at all the netbooks with Steam accounts and think PC is mostly worse than PS5s. Core PC gaming is right in the middle. 3060s, a notch better than a SP5 are the most common card on Steam. They're like $250. 4070 is still better than 5Pro and it's $500. There's a big price range on PC. Plus many PC gamers prefer 1080p or 2k rigs running 120+fps, which is less GPU intensive than trying to run 4k and with DLSS makes it almost the same. Which is oddly what Sony is peddling here for double the money.

I agree with ur points. But some of it is assuming people already bought a PS5. If not, you have the option for a $699 console or a equivalent PC but 2 or 300 dollars more expensive. Which will also need upgrading in 4 years btw.

To be positive, a lot of the upgrades sound like they will make games even more gorgeous for those folks who play on 4K screens. They won't mean too much for me, as I play on a 240 hz HD monitor, but I can't wait to see some of the compatible games on my friends' big TVs!

With a base console costing just short of £500, an upspecced version with double the storage was always likely to come in expensive, and it has. Most people are well served with the base machine, which wil remain the most popular sku of course.
People with deep pockets who want the best will pay of course, but its just an expensive option, not necessary.

@LogicStrikesAgain Yeah, that's definitely true regarding upgrades, but where I think the main differences lie is if you're upgrading on the "off" cycles (when the Supers come out etc, a few years after the consoles come out) you can get a lot more value than the consoles in terms of much higher performance for the same or less money (after initial investment). As well as the game investment where your library keeps upgrading with your hardware, while on console you get into that being sometimes true, sometimes not true, will they release a patch, will they remaster, etc. And there's also the ability to buy a little more power than you need when you buy so that as the games get "more demanding" you can dial back the res or fx and rely on upscaling to maintain performance, or drop performance a bit and maintain visuals. You get a lot of flexibility in games to dial them to your hardware rather than getting one size fits all, so you can stretch your hardware longer. It blows my mind what I can run on my Legion just turning some visuals down and how much you don't miss them when you don't have them. With that you can really stretch beyond those 4 years. Enthusiasts don't, but that's just enthusiasts being enthusiasts.

But yeah, there's definitely price calculations. I think for enthusiasts, at this point, it's clear that you'll have a much better experience for similar or even less money than the consoles over the span of 10 years, with the ability to upgrade at the time of your choosing rather than in hype waves. For more casual players, yeah, the console is more convenient for sure. But the costs really blur that line, and the problem consoles have been facing is that the casual market has been largely eroded toward mobile and potato PCs anyway, leaving most of the console market being the enthusiasts. I still think a price tag like this on the pro is a misstep. The more they erode the value line of consoles, the more PC picks up....ahem....steam (I'll get my coat), and the more common that becomes the more competition in prebuild form factors will start appearing to challenge the old console format. I think they've overplayed their hand pretty far here.

I do agree that the proposition of the Pro is better if you don't already have a PS5, though I'm not sure there's much market in that category. The kind of person who buys a $700 console is likely the same kind of person who buys a $500 console at launch. I think this is squarely aimed at existing owners. Anyone who didn't already want a PS5 for $500 is probably not going to be enthused by a new $700 model, and Sony's estimates already projected slower sales. Sure there's that trickle of sales from people debating to go PC or go console and this might tip them to console, but that still makes it woefully niche where anyone looking for real performance will look at the price to performance on offer and go PC instead, and anyone not interested in that kind of expense is more likely to stick with the base.

For $700 you'd think you'd get glass or aluminum or something at least. It's still just plastic for that money. Stick RGB on the go faster stripes or something lol.

I'm not even going to bother watching the video on it now as I know I'll never be getting this. And it doen't sold well at launch because of that high price. The lost from each unit also put Sony financials in the red that almost bankrupt them.

Luckily based Kaz Hirai turned the table with PS3 Slim which was much cheaper along with great games + funny ads from 'Kevin Butler'. If Sony stick with the initial price, PS3 wouldn't sell 80+ million units and even last for 7 years.

The mistake with PS3 made Sony humble and put reasonable price for PS4. But here we are again with 700 bucks for PS5 Pro that came without disc drive. SMH 🤦‍♂️

Well there is new GPU techniques, 2TB and no disk drive....

Seeing no Xbox option 'yet' or maybe ever as they push for streaming or keep to the 2TB as well with the same parts, is nice to see (besides yes save less on parts and working with what they have) as they are fine with their GPU techniques as it is. Sure price is high as well but the fact they aren't trying to brag about GPU techniques like Sony is (it's a fair tech for them to offer but if it REALLY isn't that different then who really cares, they can brand it any way they want and people will still believe it after all) they have is surprising.

Space Marine 2 with the hive mind Tyranids with big to kill smaller was a cool tidbit I noticed (not learn, forget, stunned I want in games with robots/bugs but eh, it's something). Not seen much wider appealing gameplay ideas though only little ones. Small ones count but haven't enough for me really. But current gen, no interest still.

Sony wants to brag as much as possible, will it have benefits yes I think so I know their engineers would put effort in for sure besides just accounts/marketers in their leadership being untrustworthy as they are and can tell us anything nonsensical.

Do they want store sales yes of course they do, why bother with a disk drive, more digital control, no disk to digital conversion ever, old PS5 or a 4K blu-ray player instead. Motion Plus for Wii I prefer over built in that died of whole remote. But for a console nah, both options in 1. Seeing a Series S struggle to be setup too made me think eh if internet settings mess up or parts, got that offline for disk besides less downloads when offline to play those digital games.

Do they want more people to not notice the price, the Dualsense price increase, the messes they have made, the products they ignore as they say good bye to that product and audience who like that niche product of PSVR2, Portal, etc. Of benefits from those.

Sony are doing a great job so far angering their hardcore fans that are more likely to weigh up their options and do want benefits but factors have gotten in the way of that then those that are sheep/whales whatever term works that will buy it immediately that they are relying on that don't care/eat it up and see the new product/forget prices or benefits PS4 Pro had that we were more comfortable with in how they handled it back then. Sigh.

I'm all for devs having more to work with. Like 32X to Saturn was awkward but the same applies even if different here with PS5 Pro to PS6 prep. I totally get it.

Hardcore fans 'usually' pay attention so the fact they want sheep to buy it in a heart beat is insane.

To get hardcore fans to jump on it or tech enthusiasts, thing is those on PC know what things are worth for sure and while fans will jump on it for the benefits or bragging rights.

I can skip a console or anything for social factors so to me it's just eh. The regular PS5 is totally fine. Regardless of the 1800p or 1400p or whatever else with frame rate, less 'blur shown in footage for comparison' as well.

The techniques being probably fair and oh Sony did what they did with the SSD as well to be special. It's fair for them to do so, but more proprietary stuff to call their own, do whatever to control then dealing with others licenses/messaging, it has it's benefits for them but also is clear why, brag about it as well, or theirs to control whichever way they want to and has been for a reason as well.

Looking across social media, not ONE person has said they’ll be buying this, only people on here have said they will. Everyone complaining about the ridiculous price and the fact you couldn’t really tell any difference in the games they showed running on it. It isn’t looking too good for Sony I have to say, they may have priced themselves out of the market with this one.

@nedbvai so let me get this right... you want Sony to force developers to support a console that hardly anyone will buy, just because you seem to have too much money to waste on tech-bling to make you feel good about yourself? Yes - if you don't have the money don't buy it... that's an easy statement. The real question is - why should Sony spend money developing a system for the 5% of people that actually might buy it? Rather than say, developing games that actually work well on the PS5?
