Overwatch and Diablo developer Blizzard Entertainment is seemingly working on something new. As spotted by Timur222 on Twitter (also known as X), senior director of product management Chris McCabe has added an "unannounced AAA RPG-FPS title" for consoles and PC to his LinkedIn profile. Interesting.
As you'd expect, unannounced projects like this tend to generate a lot of speculation. The mention of "AAA" at least gives us some idea of the game's scope, but there's no guarantee that it won't be cancelled or completely rebuilt long before we even get a chance to see it.
Still, McCabe's profile provides a hint as to what the project might be. As recently as June 2024, he was assigned the role of product manager for Overwatch specifically. And with that in mind, some people are already betting on this "RPG-FPS" being related to the popular hero shooter.
Adding weight to this theory is the fact that once upon a time, Blizzard had pretty big plans for PvE modes in Overwatch. At one point, they were going to be a core component of Overwatch 2 — but the whole idea was canned before the sequel's full release in 2022. It's possible the bones of that PvE stuff will form the basis of whatever this new project is.
Of course, we'll have to wait and see how all of this plays out. Again, it could be years until we actually hear about this game in an official capacity.
How does an Overwatch spin-off sound to you? Maybe you want Blizzard to push forward with a new IP instead? Claim your play of the game in the comments section below.

- Yes, I'd be all over it
- Yeah, probably
- Yep, but only if it's single-player or PvE
- Nah, probably not
- No, I don't like Overwatch at all

Only needs 698 concurrent players at launch to beat Concord, think they'll manage that?
If it'll be Destiny-like then I'll definitely be interested to see what they can do with OW universe?
Absolutely 0 chance. They canned OW PvE, they’re not making a standalone.
Oversaturated garbage!
@Artois2
Really? Only good one I played recently was Cyberpunk and that was insanely well done.
I've had absolutely zero interest in Fallout 4/ 76 and definitely that snoozefest of a Starfield.
I'd welcome a good one, but it feels like they don't put much effort into writing anymore. "Good enough" is the new standard and these publishers are probably like "they'll buy it anyway". Glad lots of these games are getting some backlash. They think their consumers are stupid and treat us like that
A few years ago I would have said yes but now I'm just tired and bored of Overwatch.
I would be up for anything that has PvE content and isn't a hero shooter honestly.
Which will be monetized into oblivion!
The fact Gearbox hasn't managed to craft a true endgame for Borderlands is wild to me. Re-running the story and bosses is NOT endgame content. It's boring af.
If a company came out with a looter shooter that had a true, honest to goodness endgame loop akin to ARPGs like Diablo, it'd be amazing. No one seems to put it together, though. Division 2 probably came closest and even that wore out its welcome too quickly.
I'd be happy if they brought starcraft to the ps5.
Anything Blizzard is a no go for me.
Over-commiserating?
@MFTWrecks 3rd person shooters seem to be doing it better, with a look to Remnant 1 + 2, Returnal (I think? Never played it) and I'm sure there's been a few other good ones across the last few years.
@J2theEzzo The Remnant games don't really have an endgame, either, as good as they are. But their WAY of letting you replay stuff is still preferable to Borderlands' "replay the whole story from beginning to end."
Returnal isn't an ARPG, it's a rogue-like. The entire point is to replay it from beginning to end over and over. Not quite the same thing.
@MFTWrecks Yeah, I see what you mean. Was it Outriders that came out a few years back? Was a bit Destiny-like, but seemed to be a commercial flop. Another I didn't play, so!
@J2theEzzo You may be thinking of Outriders. I played that as part of PS+ (whatever tier 2 is called) and it wasn't half bad (as an enjoyer of Borderlands, Division, Diablo, et al). Sadly, the "true" endgame was behind a DLC buy-in and I refused to make that purchase.
That game was okay fun. Like a "Gears of War with loot" sorta vibe. Definitely understand why it didn't light the world on fire, though. Would actually be very into seeing what People Can Fly would do with another crack at it, as it set a solid foundation but just wasn't really the best it could have been by any measure.
I would rather it be a starcraft spin off. Overwatch is just going to be shooting more robots
@MFTWrecks I loved outrider's
Could StarCraft G.H.O.S.T be back on the table ????
I'd love an Overwatch RPG in the style of Outriders (obviously that's 3rd person, but I mean that style of game). I played it recently and really enjoyed it. I really like Overwatch's Characters and art style, so I'd be all over an RPG set in that world.
Id probs try it but only coz would be on gamepass don't think there my type of game if it's like outriders fallout 76 as seen in comments but always be worth a try see if it's good i suppose 😅. Mad how reading this on on here it's not on px though 😂
Only if it's singleplayer offline.
Zzzzzzz... Zzzzzz... Zzzzz... What? Oh, mentioning online shooters has a habit of making me snooze.
"Great", even more trash from Blizzard...
I wonder if this will be close to what Overwatch was before it became Overwatch... Titan, although that was an MMO... unless it was gonna be an MMO in the sense that Destiny is an MMO?
I'll be interested to see if it ever see's the light of day
@MFTWrecks Yeah, seemed like a solid 7, before every other game was also a 7, haha. Seen it's often in the sales cheap, but I suppose there's not going to be a big online community now.
@J2theEzzo I enjoyed having played the whole base game solo. I don't think an online community is really needed to appreciate what they did with that game. Fwiw
as long as it doesn’t have cartoony graphics with oversaturated colors. i’m so tired of it now
