Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb is almost always reliable when it comes to the timing of Sony’s State of Play events, and he reckons there’ll be one around 24th September, according to comments he made on his Game Mess Mornings podcast. This would align with previous statements he’s made, all pointing to some kind of late September broadcast.
Tokyo Game Show is set to get underway on 26th September, and we know Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will feature prominently, so the timing makes sense. Presumably there’ll be other announcements from third-party partners, including potentially a new Resident Evil from Capcom, which has also been rumoured for a while.

Crucially, though, Grubb notes this will be a State of Play, and a not a full-blown PS Showcase. It means that, just like in 2022, Sony will likely go another full calendar year without a big E3-style blowout.
“So, a year goes by with no PS Showcase where it’s like, ‘Here’s all our big stuff,’” Grubb teased. “So people are going to set expectations low again, and it’s like, ‘Man, do you have Ghost of Tsushima to talk about yet? Is there going to be a Naughty Dog game this generation?’ It’s beginning to look like it’s taking them even longer than they expected to get these games out, and that’s hurting them in instances like the PS5 Pro where they try to make a case to justify the system but they don’t have anything to go along with it.”
Sony has generally been keeping its cards close to its chest this generation: Astro Bot was announced and released within four months, so it doesn’t necessarily mean big games aren’t coming. But PlayStation fans are understandably agitated: they want to know what big ticket first-party projects there are to look forward to, beyond the aforementioned Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Marvel’s Wolverine.
Let’s hope this upcoming State of Play is a good one, and not another let down like recent broadcasts have been.

Good thing Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is swooping in to save September with their summit on the 20th. Kiwami 3 GOTY 2025 baybee!
Not remotely shocked anymore.
I mean, why even bother making any kind of effort to tell your fanbase what you’re working on.. hey?
"Let’s hope this upcoming State of Play is a good one, and not another let down like recent broadcasts have been."
Lol. That has me psyched to drop $800 on a PS5 Pro.
Cant wait for a 10 minute breakdown of Fairgame$, Sony's latest great live-service game after Concord.
Sony's going downhill.
@Golem25 its been reported yakuza wars is a mobile game
I always enjoy these state of plays, I go in to them expecting nothing and if I come away excited about 1 or 2 upcoming games it was worth a watch.
Admittedly, this would be the ideal opportunity to showcase what's coming two days before preorders open for the pro. Do I think Sony will take advantage of that, knowing them probably not 😄 The timing is suspect though.
Congrats to Sony on beating their PS3-era levels of arrogance and consumer disregard.
@LifeGirl we have been hoping for a good state of play for 5 years now. XD I guess hope is all we have left this generation XD
@itsfoz By the looks of things, it seems like their Studios are barely working on anything at this rate.
Sony (I mean SIE) I can't take them seriously anymore, the lack of first party games, then the almighty audacity to charge £700 for their meh mid gen console (which of course it ont buy, since I already own a ps5). SIE has become so arrogant its disgraceful
I want to know if those 2 first party VR games are real, hell I'd take a new wipeout that can be played flat.
Sony has Conquered the industry and has already given us a number of Fair Games, so why should they show us anything new? They are on Fire and Walk with purpose, no need for Bungee cords to make them bounce all over the place. They’ll be alright, even if they’ve stopped treading into Uncharted territory and have disappointed even The Last of every one of Us this generation. But they’ve done the L ast o’ covering for what they Bought and I think they learned some lessons this year.
They are funny old bunch Sony but we got Astro Bot, but hopefully next year we will get more from them, need something to show the Pro off.
I normally moan about my Switch and lack of first party but Sony last year 2023 and this year 2024 definitely get that reward from their studios.
Let’s be honest they probably don’t have to try that hard now as Microsoft have taken to putting their games on PS5.
It’s like the best outcome we get Xbox games.
But with the worry thought of Sony not trying that hard now.
They said they plan to have big games for 2025 & 2026 so it's time to show their games.
I've actually been pretty happy with more than a few SOP's this generation. It has been pretty dry from the first party for a while now though. Thankfully we did just get Astro Bot which turned out to be an absolute GOAT so at least there's that.
Would just like a little more communication. Like Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch. Where are you guys? I'm ready for whatever you guys got cooking!
Ps3 emulation, Midway MK games in one collection and Ratchet and clank remasters.
Its the hope that kills you.
Playing Astro bot at the ape escape level makes me feel sad at what Sony are nowadays to what they were 🥲
C'mon new Resident Evil!!!
For the rest of this year and possibly half of 2025, I personally already locked in with some games that already out but i don't have the time / money to play / buy them. So I don't expect anything from this SOP outside Death Stranding 2.
Don't havy any expectation is better. That way, you wouldn't feel dissapoint if the show doesn't have nothing that you want.
Not even a PS Showcase is crazy. Nintendo at this point is just ‘Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing’, Sony and Microsoft are determined to murder themselves.
Even though it's just a state of play, I still expect one big announcement. My money would be on Ghost of Tsushima 2.
@Th3solution deep symbolism.
Why? Who even cares at this point? Sony is more concerned about taking money from their fans than making games for their fans. Save for Astro Bot and Rift Apart, this has been the most disappointing console generation I have ever seen.
I have plenty to play and don't need anything to look forward to, personally. It'd be nice if the industry could hit pause for a year or two and not release anything so I could catch up on a lot of apparently good games that I skipped due to not having the time.
@nessisonett It's a little insane that things look brighter for the Switch's future as it nears EoL than they do for PS5, which, in the middle of the generation now, should be peaking.
Missteps like Concord aside, big home console games just take WAAAAAAAY too long to make nowadays.
24th seems right considering Pro preorders starts 26th.
Hermen Hulst has such a punchable face… I really despise him as a fellow Dutchy. I really dislike the moment he took over with Ryan
You'd have to imagine there will be a Showcase this time next year 2025 when there's a few more PS 1st party games closer to being finished and closer to release?
Off topic but just grabbed Tormented Souls for £1.59 on PS store sales, ideal survival horror for next month. Also have to mention The Crew 2 is 79p
@Ralizah That’s why we need more games like astrobot 🙂
I think for Sony GTA VI is currently more important than anything else.
otherwise, there is no need for a showcase to announce new first party titles.
Sony was meant to be growing their development teams to be working on 2 titles at a time to ensure a decent hit rate of new titles. It's crazy how this generation has developed.
As I have said before though, don't expect to see ghost of tsushima until Assassins Creed Shadows releases. Sony appears to have the marketing agreement for that so I would be amazed if they said anything until after it launches.
The live service fixation and the race to the bottom for bigger, more graphically intensive titles has hurt Sony though. I'd have thought the success of the Switch would have shown that you don't need to have the flashiest graphics to make fun games that sell extremely well.
If the news of a SOP is real, I expect we will see Death Stranding and Lego Horizon, but doubt we hear of much else. Maybe Astrobot dlc or Spiderman dlc. Expect they will be pushing for a new GTA 6 trailer though
I bet half the show would be sugarcoating the ps5 pro with ps4 games that run better. At this rate sony could just do nvidia and produce a new gpu line every 2-3 years. Playstation name could remain optional and peripherals like the dualsense or the ps vr.
@StrickenBiged Ikr. There's so many games that already out and i want to play them but can't because of limited money and time. And when i bought one or two games from my wishlist, they already announced plenty of new interesting games that will come out soon.
I'm not yet own Unicorn Overlord, Ace Attorney 4-6 and Investigation collection, Kunitsu Gami, Shadow of the Ninja Reborn, Space Marine 2, Astro, etc etc.
So i feel quite envy every time i see some people who's complaining and ask for more games as if they already played and finished all games that just came out. Must be nice to be rich and have a lot of free time. sigh 😔
I highly doubt next year will be weak. Death Stranding 2 is 90%+ likely to make it, Venom: Lethal Protector is scheduled for Q3 and Ghost of Tsushima Sequel would require some serious delays to not make it by the end of the year. Lots of other possibilities too.
@Beerheadgamer82 Tormented Souls is a nice throwback to PS1 era classic horror survival, something you don't see very often anymore. Hope you enjoy it, I did!
Frankly, does the distinction between State of Play and PlayStation Showcase even matter that much? The last "Showcase" was so underwhelming I can barely remember what was on it.
was not the last showcase in 2021?
@Gaia093
Concord reveal I think, fair games , marathon, final shape, phantom blade and Spider-Man gameplay were the big titles
I'm one of the very few gamers who's interested in PS5 Pro at that price but I probably won't bother due to mismanagement of PS Studios
@Gaia093 It's a fair point.
Good to see everyone in an upbeat mood as always.
@Th3solution That is actually pretty damn good.
Sony first party really needs to figure out a way to optimize output. Maybe more standalone DLC type of games like Miles Morales to help cover the gaps. It's just crazy we're this far into PS5 and I don't really feel like there have been any must have first party exclusives outside of the launch window
@OldGamer999 i mean in fairness PS has only gotten 4 games from MS so far. Mostly smaller ones. Sure Doom is coming but that was kind of a giving. Now when we start to see Forza, Halo and Gears and Fable, it’s a wrap there would be little reason to need a Xbox, i don’t think they give those up right away. I could see State of Decay and Starfield making its way to PS5 at some point tho.
@Ainu20 I know yh enjoyed the demo of it when it first released but never got round to grabbing, to busy on the new PS Plus tiers at the time and backlog. The original and best RE 90s trilogy all would feature in my own top 10 games of all time list
Let's say that Sony has scheduled the release of Ghost Of Tsushima 2 for the middle of 2025. What would be the difference if it was announced now or a month before it's released?
I really want to understand why Sony stopped teasing games that’s 2 or 3 years down the road?!
It was great to understand what I’ll get in the next 3 years or so!!
700 pound console without a disk drive, and no new games still to show off. What the hell are Sony doing?
I can't see a State Of Play having anything new, more like trying to show off games on the new Pro console.
@Ralizah There’s probably more first party Switch games still to come that I care about than PS5 ones!
More expensive consoles, less games.
#ForThePayers
I would just hope that there's no (or at least minimal) truth to the recent rumour that they won't have much to show outside of third party titles. Not that it would come as any surprise with the precedent they've been setting over the last year and change.
Hopefully not too much of a disappointment after the crap that was Gamescom ONL.
Honestly hoping the switch 2 is decent becuase Sony have fallen off massively. If it wasn't for GTA 6 I'd have sold my PS5 already
Sony said they wouldn't show anything new this year, yet people are still complaining...
What have Sony been doing for the past 4 years. Worse gen ever for single player narrative driven experiences. The one thing that Sony built its huge following with they seem to have almost abandoned.
@Golem25 absolutely, team RGG are the most reliable in the biz, without making fans wait. Yes, they reuse assets, but always deliver great story and gameplay. Love them!
Can’t wait for more remasters and remakes! Les gooooooooo. There are only 6 or 7 1st party exclusives for ps5 at this point that aren’t remakes, remasters or cross gen games.
@ArcadeHeroes probably not the only plate they got spinning.
@CielloArc Was just about to say this.
About a month ago didn't they say they wouldn't have any new blockbuster releases until 2025?
This time next year one or two big titles will be announced or released and nobody will remember that we didn't know what was coming.
And then about two weeks after that we'll be back to complaining that nothing is coming.
Is this maybe about the Game Awards? 10th anniversary is a big milestone and Sony supports Geoff a lot. Considering GotY will probably be Rebirth or Astro Bot, I could see Sony wanting to take advantage of that with some PS Studios single player announcements.
Kind of like how Nintendo made a bunch of announcements at Game Awards 2017 when they knew it was likely that either BotW or Mario Odyssey was going to win.
I'm wondering if Sony are keeping the powder keg dry because with Switch 2 coming next year they could do with big game announcements to compete.
@CielloArc They said they wouldn't have major IP releases in 2024, that doesn't mean they can't show something for 2025 yet. In fact, if they're releasing something major in the first half of next year, this is the time to start announcing it.
I'll go ahead and just say it...this Sony sucks. Hopefully most of there greedy tactics fail for them. I've spent less during the PS5 gen than I ever have previously.
Do people only play first-party titles on PlayStation?
@HonestHick
It’s a small list so far, but the Indy thing at the show sort of showed me Microsofts intentions.
They could have left it until after the Xbox release until say next March before announcing.
@ButterySmooth30FPS
That what I got my PlayStation consoles for and the PS5.
And had my series x for third party, but about 2 months ago my PS5 has become my main console so third party games are PS5 now including maybe Indy and Doom from Xbox.
The series x will probably go once my GPU runs out in March 2025.
Then of course I’m very interested in Switch 2.
The longer they take, the better. Gives me time to catch up on stuff xD
Sony have become so lazy it's unreal. How many times this generation have they done any significant showcase?
So the showcase will be right before PS5 Pro preorders open. Hopefully they'll make a better case for the PS5 Pro during the event!
I'm hoping for Concord 2. But we'll probably just get a remaster. Maybe on the PS5 Pro the characters will look better.
@Sanquine It's because he's always looking down his nose. Comes off as real arrogant.
If Sony is cutting corners on not including a stand or disk drive with the PS5 Pro, it makes you wonder what other corners Sony has cut. My biggest concern is that like the regular PS5, the PS5 Pro will overheat. I believe on the PS5 this is due to cutting corners on cooling solutions. It’s up to Sony to convince me that is not the case with the PS5 Pro.
@OldGamer999 Interesting. PS5 has been my main for the last 4 years with Series S and Switch filling in the blanks. The Xbox is like 90% 360 games. My original plan when I got back into games in general was to stick with PS3 and reject modern games. That didn't last...!
@nessisonett Remember when Sony was transitioning from being a consumer electronics company to an entertainment company? Now they unleash a $700 gaming VCR and..........that's it. We need a new Walkman. In silver, of course.
I hope they try to relaunch Concord, except they've all got snazzy new hats on. I would genuinely respect them for it.
@NEStalgia The Concord episode of that Amazon Prime series needs to spinoff into its own series on Netflix first before Concord 2 can canonically take place. Patience. Sony's ten-year-plan for the Concord universe has only just begun to take shape.
There been a showcase every year in September since 2019. So yeah they are likely to keep up with that pattern. I can tell you which months the 2025 showcases will be in if you want?
This generation has to be the worse for me
PlayStation 5 is great at playing PlayStation 4 games
@Gaia093 I guess they want to get rid of the term „Showcase“ entirely and replace it with the catchier „State of Play“ for all regular video formats.
„Showcase“ is so unspecific, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an „Tesla Showcase“ or an „Xiaomi Showcase“, and even Nintendo uses it for its „Partner Showcase“.
And calling it all „State of Play“ allows for positive surprises (and disappointments).
@get2sammyb detectiveseeds on twitter and YouTube has been on a roll with information for awhile now before people like Grubb says anything the detective had already known of this info since the end of August
I remember the story about sony ceo or someone said they don't have alot of IPs what,rubbish if they got ratchet and clank games to the dasme number as they did on ps2 or ps3 would be great, new jak and daxter, and finish The damn SLY RACOON story damn Cliffhanger, resistance, knack, mean their are so many games even go more anime like games make telltale games sure some of the ex works would like to comeback or back ones bast off old kid TV show get licenses like oban star racers, shaman king, a digimon rpg with options tournament battles, new strip vampire game, do a deal with persona, or bring back the games with the gravity games so many shelved games out there deserve a rebirth
I've never been hurting for something to play this generation, but that's mainly because of a huge PS4 backlog along with 3rd party releases trying to fill the void.
It took me a while, but I'll join others in saying this generation has been a huge disappointment. I still like my PS5 and there's been some amazing games, but PlayStation's own lack of presence on their own console in comparison to previous generations is definitely a huge bummer. The extended development time can't be used as an excuse either as we are now nearly 4 years into the console generation and several of their developers have still failed to release anything new on the PS5, with nothing in sight as most of their developers have revealed nothing.
I've had enough of being disappointed by these State of Plays, expecting announcements from their 1st party and getting very little, so I will continue to not bother watching this like I have their last couple of State of Plays. I'd rather spend my time playing something than wasting time watching trailers for games I don't care about for the most part.
Some people dont care.sony is truly on cocaine this ps5 generation😁😂😳😊😃.word up son
@Ralizah 😂. Which part of the 10 year plan involves taking the flame thrower to all its assets? Can I pre-order the collectors edition of that?
All that promises from Mark Cerny that it would take less time to develop, for the PS5 than for the PS4, was rubbish.
I really wonder what all the in-house studios are doing.
I used to be very bearish about Playstation 5 the last few months but Astro Bot completely cleansed my negativity about Playstation.
An additional annoucement like that, would be neat.
Surprise me Sony, surprise me.
Lol Grubb is only right because he predicts a SoP every single time he opens his mouth, he's the human equivalent of a broken watch being right twice a day.
@Khwarezm89 Because back then people was whining like an entitled babies, asking Sony to announced their games close to release date. And now when Sony did it, people are crying and complaining why no communication from Sony, Sony is lazy, Sony is arrogant, etc etc.
@HRdepartment I'll take remaster of:
Heck, i don't mind ICO or Medievil 2 remake.
@PuppetMaster There must be a middle-ground between teasing the same 2 - 4 games for half a generation and announcing a game mere months before release, lol. Nintendo does the latter a lot, but that's because they actually publish a ton of games every year.
Sony should find a middle-ground between what they're doing now (total silence on almost everything a year or more out) and teasing games that are practically a generation away. Assuming they actually have stuff coming in the next year or two other than Marathon.
@NEStalgia It is remarkable how quickly a multi-hundred-million dollar game/planned franchise went from the future of Playstation's AAA focus to "burn it with fire!"
@anoyonmus @Yousef- Thanks.
I did forget to mention that they are definitely trying not to Lego of their marketplace lead.
While I personally don't mind as I'm well aware I'm a money sink (sorry customer) rather than a "fan" to Sony, they are a business after all it would be nice at this point to at least say their teams are working on SOMETHING. GoT came out in may/June 2020 what exactly are Guerilla, Santa Monica, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch up to for instance? Oh yeah remastering 3-4 year old games that nobody asked for. Hey maybe Ghost will have a remaster announcement next 🤣 to think of the stuff they used to make and publish and now it's 1 game every 5 years that follows the exact same open world cinematic blueprint they have been grinding to dust for the past decade...
@Ralizah " Assuming they actually have stuff coming in the next year or two other than Marathon."
You forgot Fairgame$$$$$. You casual.
" It is remarkable how quickly a multi-hundred-million dollar game/planned franchise went from the future of Playstation's AAA focus to "burn it with fire!"
Just like Jimbos executive career. Has nice symmetry, really
@Ralizah People will still complain even if Sony take the middle ground.
And i'm sure PS5 will have enough games for next year or two. Sony already showed Death Stranding 2, Wolverine, Fairgames, Lost Soul Aside, Phantom Blade Zero, MH Wilds, MGS 3 remake, etc. Insomniac leaks also showed Venom, Spidey 3, an X-Men game, a new Ratchet, and a new IP until 2032.
People needs to relax and enjoyed what's already out. Let devs do their job.
If they would announce Resident Evil 9 (or the RE 0 Remake they are currently working on) that would be insane but I highly doubt it as the game has been delayed quite a bit in production (It was originally supposed to come out early 2025) and is not supposed to come out for at least a year.
@Khwarezm89 because they got so much crap for the games being so far away when teased. There's no winning with today's consumers. If it's not want, want, want, it's gimme now, gimme now, gimme now.
@Rob_230 the worrying thing is that Sony announced in their last investor call that they were aiming for (at best) 1 major tentpole game per year.... I think the idea of multiple games being worked on in any of these studios (other than Insomniac) is gone... my guess is that they have 70% of their teams working on their single super-sized major releases, and 10% doing remasters and 20% doing concept design for new IP (yes - of course these are all out my whazoo). The problem is that their major releases are taking up increasingly more effort to achieve even 5-6 year turn-arounds. I also suspect that they've thrown away more concept games than what we can imagine. I think the problem is that they're losing the culture of coming up with new IP.
My speculation is that they will focus on 3rd party (AC Shadows) and Death Stranding 2 including PS5Pro enhancements; some re-hashes (Silent Hill 2 (last trailer); Alien Rogue Incursion; Slitterhead). I know people want GoT2; and you'd think if it's coming they'd be aiming for a March release (for FY reasons)... fingers crossed, I know they're not really hiring anymore so they're likely in the clean-up phase. I think 50-50 on whether FairGame$ gets a showing (I think Sony marketing is s**ting bricks about that game now).... and they have a mountain of fundamental programmer positions going, suggesting they're still in the build phase. I do think it's possible we'll get a sneak peak at an Atreus GoW half-game... that needs to be close. Other than that... I don't see a lot to expect. Hope I'm wrong..
The comment section of this website has gone downhill for the last several months. All there is mostly negativity and complaining.
@TrickyDicky99 Makes me glad I got a PS5, and makes me keen to get a PS5 Pro.
@PuppetMaster Some people will always be unhappy. That doesn't mean Sony can't improve their approach, though.
Oh yeah, there's no lack of games coming that are playable on the console. It's not about that. It's about Sony's communication with their base. Which is more frustrating considering how many potential live service blunders they have in the making, and how few original PS5 games they've released overall this generation.
@NEStalgia That's true. I did. I have to say, whatever executive thought it was cute to replace the 'S' with a dollar sign deserves a good smack in the face.
@Ralizah U d0n7 7h!nk 1337 h@x0r 5p33k !z h!p w!7 73h k!dz 2d@y?

By the way, this exchange has confirmed for me that we're both far too old.
@Ralizah ROFL! 🤣 Very sad. Very true. But still not as old as whoever thought swapping an $ for an s would make their game relevant for zoomers and below.
We're at least young enough to recognize cringe.
@OldGamer999 Yeah I agree. I was shocked they did it that way, the only thing i could think of is Disney wanted it to be hyped for PS5 as well instead of just dropping it on PS5. I mean they own the IP and i am sure have a lot of say over it and where it goes. I am not sure. But what i am sure about is more titles will hit PS5, it’s just a matter of when and which ones at this point.
I have owned every Sony console and handheld. I feel like Sony has been phoning it in lately. I expect better from them.
@Ralizah "Which is more frustrating considering how many potential live service blunders they have in the making, and how few original PS5 games they've released overall this generation"
Can you blame Sony for making less original games when the majority of PS fans never show up to support those original games?
See what happened to Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Jeanne D'Arc, Sackboy, Returnal, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and many more. Even the latest Astro Bot only sold 12K in Japan which is a fking tragedy 😔
It's the sad reality that PS5 sold 60 million units but only less than 0.5-1% from those numbers who cares about "original games".
the fanboys are finally waking up , it only took about 3 years , but it’s happening! this generation BLOWS
No first party games,countless remasters and really old decrepit tech apparently (sarcasm) and yet Sony is still selling a silly amount of ps5's and taking all the "complainers" money...yes indeed this generation has been a massive flop for Sony. All joking aside I can see why people are unhappy but we all still buy the console and games. Skipping this years state of play has got people rankled because they want Sony to show off what it's cooking but there is nothing to show. I guess people want Sony to show up with bugger all so they can say what everybody already knows...there's no first party games ready yet if at all.
It's nice too see some of the die hards finally waking up to the things some of us have been saying for a few years now. This version of Playstation has been rubbish and Jim Ryan was a complete disaster.
I remember lots of here including staff saying how good Ryan was because the PS5 was selling, not understanding that it was selling because of the PS4 and nothing to do with Ryan. We had to put up with years of disingenuous positivity, now people are finally waking up, but it's too late.
@Sakai yeah , the “doomers” were just trolls back then even though we’ve been saying the same thing that many are saying now
you also hit the nail on the head with “disingenuous positivity”
@PuppetMaster
I wonder how many of those complaining about 'No original games' or 'Not enough new games' havent bought Astro (a universally praised game) because they will 'Wait for a sale'!
For clarity, i know games are expensive, and fine if its just not your thing at all, but you cant complain about 'No original / new games' if you arent willing to put your hand in your wallet.
I dont care about showcase vs state of play, but 15-20 mins a month isnt too much to ask for, surely....
@Rich33 exactly. I always wait for a sale, because I can't afford the asking price at launch, but I've never complained about Sony making x or z. At the end of the day, they'll make games they think are profitable. Gravity Rush was one of my favourite games, but unfortunately it didn't sell well, so I get it.
I would expect a PlayStation Experience return in December personally. Why do big showcase in September when 3 months later it's 30 years of PlayStation?
Hopefully I'm not disappointed
@naruball
Its a fine balance. On 1 hand I hate companies that try to fleece people ('maximise profits' i think they call it eg full price and microtransactions), but on the other hand the state of the industry in general and hesitation to try something whether big, new, or original is quite sad, and clearly shows a lot of financial risk. Even Sony (who have a much bigger problem with mismanagement to be sure) seem reluctant to try new IPs in case they bomb.
Im glad you understood where i was coming from - i tried to word carefully, because i know there are a lot of genuine people out there (and its not like i dont remember when i had to limit myself to only a couple of games a year, or sales) - but there are those who 1 minute are outraged that devs are not taking large numbers of varied AAA game financial risks on their behalf, then never buy games unless on sale yet still expect sequels, then complain that Sony or whoever are not subsidising their console (ie selling at big loss) for them. I think the rumours of low Astro sales have made me touchy!
@Rich33 True, gaming is way bigger now than when I was a little kid in the early 90's. Back then games were developed with tiny teams, small budgets and released at £40-50. Now they cost multiple millions, teams are generally 100 and above and yet the price of them has barely changed. Look at Astro, it's £59.99 which is literally £10 more than it cost me to buy Sonic 3 in 1994 and £10 less than Turok on the N64.
That's a damn shame if it's true it isn't selling well as I played it all last weekend with the wife and is the most unadulterated pure fun I have had a with a game in a long time and for me it's easily on par with Mario, let's hope we can get more like it but it's doubtful.
@Stale-Bread
Quite agree on price - though i will add that some devs dont help themselves with all the unoptimised crap these days, which is a cause of them losing money not an effect imo, but thats another discussion!
I hope the rumours ive read/heard (which may only have come about from Japan sales) prove to be rubbish too. And we must remember, Astro was probably produced with a smaller budget than most AAA games due to how much they had already from playroom (which is not a critisism).
Right now, my ps5 is a clunky tv streaming unit ( for some reason, Crave runs like ass on it but only on ps5… which means it’s only function I use it for is still problematic). Sony has really lost my faith this generation and at first I thought I was being a cranky gamer but so many here were able to articulate my beef with their output lately. It would be refreshing for Sony to remember variety is a thing and perhaps to let their studios release games in other genres. Maybe instead of the umpteenth FPS, make a new racer, puzzler or survival horror title. Hell, if Sony is too cheap to invest in a brand new IP, how about bringing back older classics? The thought of what could be done with a new Ape Escape entry after what team ASOBI did with Astro Bot is too good of a possibility to ignore. But sure. Try to make the next live service game happen >.<
(Looks at PS3 Era Playstation)
"Perhaps I treated you too harshly"
Code Veronica or resi 5 please
It's poor strategy on Sony's part and a fair criticism. Announcing a 800€ console with only improved versions of games that came out on the PS4 is baffling. But to see the year out without announcing any big hitters is rather stupid. As a long time Sony fan I am quite disappointed at the moment.
They know everyone's wallets are aimed towards gta6 that's why
@Jrs1 PSone era was so good and exciting now it’s corporate blandness and boring old games (Astro bot being a rare exception)

Wasn't Astro Bot a SoP game? I think Sony may just get rid of the Showcase and show all games in Sops now. The first party games aren't coming out fast enough to have a blow out presentation.
@PuppetMaster exactly this 100% sony announces games too early ( wolverine and many games in the past) that are years away people complain why announce it when theres no release date or time frame? they don't announce games they taking time from development to make slices of game play to show off or a trailer , and people complain where are the games ? people some how easily forget we already lost at least 2 years in game development to the pandemic , and for sony to release a console during shutdowns caused by the pandemic i think they've been doing pretty good so far. i'm curious if people will hold the same energy when sony finally does announce a bunch of first party single player games they've been working on , or are they going to act like they've loved sony the entire time?
@Spedfrom people just need to wait for announcements instead of listening to every rumor thats put on the internet that gets them all upset , its only a rumor after all.
Can’t announce anything if there’s nothing close to being ready yet.
@MrGawain actually, you can! Didn't they announce Wolverine ages ago when there was nothing to show?
@Slidebomb how much should it cost in your opinion? Based on specs.
Like there has been for the last 5 years.
@twitchtvpat It's damned if you do, damned if you don't for some people. Meanwhile there's plenty of new games coming out every week that people decided to ignored them including Astro Bot which is an original game from Sony.
I bet a lot of commenters in PushSquare who asked for original games still not yet play Kunitsu Gami, Unicorn Overlord, or Shadow of the Ninja Reborn.
@PuppetMaster i'm not really too worried tbh, it takes me forever to play a game these days being pretty busy with life. i still have a bunch of games i played 50% i still have to finish up anyways. i'm more worried about games coming out all with in a short amount of time and not having time to play them more then having games to play.
@Yagami I'm sure that the official social media accounts for the series / RGG Studios spamming OG Yakuza 3 screenshots right now is purely to rub salt in the wounds, and definitely not a hint at what's to come in a few days.
Their TGS State of Plays are usually pretty damn good. It doesn't need to be a Showcase to be hype at all... but ON that note.. lately every time they DO have a show that people call disappointing, there's always something from them that comes out and takes off.
Furthermore... Its TGS month and most multiplatform games go to Sony's platform anyway. Instead of being stressed or even relying on single show, look forward to games you can play that will also be announced across the board. The first-party obsession is self-damaging when you lose sight of all the other games you could be playing.
@naruball $499
@Slidebomb yes, that's incredibly reasonable. Though I'd be more comfortable with $99.
