Gearbox's foray into the world of major motion pictures has not been the rousing success intended, failing to galvanize players to go outside and see the thing. With the film's bombing at the box office and its theatrical run now all but over, it seems Borderlands did manage back its marketing budget, so that's something.
As reported by PC Gamer, bringing in just $31 million, that tidy chunk of change will just cover the film's marketing budget of $30 million, which is to say nothing of the reported $115 million it cost to make on top of that. After all, Cate Blanchet, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis don't come cheap! To put that in perspective of other video game movies, the awful Karl Urban, Dwayne Johnson DOOM movie from 2005 made about $60 million, and 2022's much better Uncharted, around $400 million.
Did you get out and see the Borderlands movie? What did you think? Set fire to fat stacks of cash in the comments section below.

The initial casting long ago confirmed my choice to not see this movie. I feel like I’m not alone.
@Doctor_BK boomerlands
@Doctor_BK The casting choices for the roles may not be the best, but a lot of them do have a following. I just think, like Concord, who was asking for this? Is Borderlands that big of an IP?
Quality isn’t even an indicator of success, especially when it comes to movies. It’s impressive making something sh*te that also has no audience on a budget this size.
DOOM was not great but it was entertaining. The FPS scene was very well done, good casting with Urban and Richard Brake who is always a fantastic character actor. The movies real mistake was casting The Rock and trying to be something it wasn’t. Borderlands was just a cynical cash grab.
Good. It's a karma for Randy.
He f*cked Sega & Alien fans with Alien Colonial Marines. Now Alien Romulus earn $300+ million, a lot more than his garbage Borderland movie.
I saw this, mainly as my son enjoys the humor if the games. It was ok, nothing special but it was pretty typical of the mood of the games, and again games are not movies. When you play a game you immerse yourself in that world and control parts, or a character. A movie is a passive venture, pure and simple and that’s difficult to translate. But it was big and stupid and that’s what I thought it would be
The Minecraft movie will be next.
Randy Twitter meltdown in 3... 2... 1...
@FanCFeast It’s a lot bigger than people realise. The franchise as a whole is around 85 million sold, which places it with some of the biggest games of all time. Borderlands 3 sold 5 million in its first week.
I just don’t think it’s the kind of game that will get the gamers into the cinemas, especially when the casting is such a departure from the source material.
People that have no idea what is the game is, probably saw the trailer and just said “nope”.
Maybe they will break even if they release a special 700$ console which can only play Borderlands. Disk drive not included.
@Czar_Khastik ahhhh the Concord of the big screen.
The film was cast during Covid. Blanchet is on record saying she didn't care how bad the script was, she just wanted to get out of the house.
General rule of thumb to consider marketing + distribution + international + ticket split with theaters is to take a budget and then multiply it by 2.5 to find the break even point. Borderlands would’ve had a break even point of roughly 287.5 million. Subtract the amount made, and that’s a loss of roughly 256 million. That’s bigger than what The Marvels lost last year and that’s one of the biggest Box Office Bombs ever.
Saw it for $5 at a theater like a week after it released. There were like 6 other people there and nobody laughed at any point. Honestly I just decided to watch it because it was really hot that day and was hungry for some popcorn.
I gotta be honest, I already forgot that this movie even happened.
I had no interest in seeing a movie based on a game I had no interest in playing
My partner and I only saw it because we have Unlimited Cards (£10.99 a month for as many Cineworld screenings as we can stuff in our eyes) and it was horrendous, badly written, mis-cast, unfinished cgi... even the Immaculate Cait Blanchet came up stinking in it.
Thanks for reminding me I still want to watch that "Doom" movie. Might make for a nice double feature. 😂
@FanCFeast The only people who know about/remember Borderlands are people who are skeptical of video game movies and will apply scrutiny. No who would just go see it like some people will see Minecraft on name alone because it's famous.
@LifeGirl maybe the next movie to make a billion dollars that movie is gonna be huge
