You may think your heart’s ready to deal with The Last of Us: Part 2 all over again, but it’s probably not. To celebrate The Last of Us Day, HBO has released the first full length trailer for the second season of its hit live action adaptation. In the video, we see various familiar scenes from the game, including the town of Jackson, new character Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), and so much more. It’s a fantastic trailer.
The first season of The Last of Us was a colossal hit for HBO, helping establish the Naughty Dog franchise as a true mainstream masterpiece. Obviously, many of us know where this story is going, but series creator Neil Druckmann has promised the second season will delve into the backstory of one character in particular which fans will eat up. We also see veteran actress Catherine O’Hara here, portraying some kind of therapist and narrating the trailer.
All in all, it looks really good, and the last few moments of the trailer go really hard. What are your thoughts after watching this clip? Let us know in the comments section below.

My body is not ready!
I wonder if I’ll hate season 2 of the show as much as I hated the game 😬 all joking aside I’m not looking forward to watching that scene with the wife (who has no idea what’s coming)
Those Pro graphics are looking incredible!
On a side note, I’m happy they didn’t age Ellie and cover her in tattoo’s like the game. I thought she lost a lot of charm in the second game. In my opinion she was almost unlikable
This is pure cinema.
My whole family who doesn't play games already knows what's going to happen. Thanks a lot bitter internet trolls.
@itsfoz
It's actually television. Cinema is big screen.
@Boxmonkey She's got her tattoo, though? In fact, if you look at the scene where she's playing the guitar, you can see it's bandaged up (likely because she's just got it done).
(Also, isn't the whole point of the story meant to be about how her obsession does make her unlikeable?)
@get2sammyb need specsavers I guess 😆
Agree on the second point but it changed the feel of the game so much. It lost the thing that made me love the first game.
@Splat
Spoiler: if you watch a piece of media which is based on another media the plot is already known.
We already had a first look, so second look.
I wonder if TV audiences can handle the story better than gamers who latch on to male protagonists (see ghosts of yotei).
Wow! Knowing what’s coming I got a little emotional watching that.
this looks incredible
@tameshiyaku Watch out for the story being told differently than in the games. I've just got this feeling in my bones that it'll be a broad strokes adaption to keep people on their toes and to correct any existing narrative failings.
The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones liked to do this.
Hey Abby looks great.
It looks so good.
This looks absolutely incredible. It's too much to process even)) Im gonna rewatch it to dust.
@LifeGirl we'll see. I'm fine with minor changes as long as it's done well and serves the overall themes.
Chills during that trailer. Looking forward to watching the adaptation of Part 2, I hope it is as challenging as the game.
It looks good but it feels like they will do some change from the game.
Looks absolutely phenomenal. Can’t wait!
Still need to finish the first season. Got through ep 4 or 5. Liked it a lot just got busy.
Joel going all Tony Soprano on an HBO show is pretty funny. 😂
Wasn't planning on watching season 2 until season 3 came out but that trailer may have changed my mind. May also have to cough up for the "no ads" version for a couple of months. 🤑
It's been awhile since I played the game but I was a little confused by that quick cut trailer. Will probably watch it again later w/ my wife, maybe we can figure it out together, she watched me play both games. Neither of us liked the 2nd game but we both like Bella Ramsey so...
This looks incredible. I think Part II’s story will benefit greatly from this format.
I wonder what the percentages are of people following the series as a gamer and how many people could/would start gaming because of watching and liking it?
Praying for you Kaitlyn 🙏. God knows what you're about to go through 😭
Looking good! First season was good, but nothing compared to the game. But still fun to watch. This trailer gives me hope season 2 will be as good as season 1 or even better.
@tameshiyaku it’s because it’s more believable that a single man can singlehandedly dispatch entire armies. It’s just weird when a woman does it. Like, when Nathan Drake was killing whole squads, it was cool. But when Nadine and Chloe were doing it, it was too unreal. Right?
I will be watching all of it day one!!
Looks awesome, excited to see how Mazin fixes the game's tedious and monotonous storyline. Here's hoping Neil brings him in to help with Part 3
@get2sammyb That is excactly the point.
@Boxmonkey @get2sammyb I wouldn’t exactly say she is covered in tattoos. The moth and fern on her arm are meant to cover her original bite mark, to hide her immunity. Plus, the moth resembles a firefly, has connotations with death and can metaphorically be seen to represent Ellie’s obsession, as a moth is obsessed with light.
I’m calling it now, season 2 ends with the theatre standoff just before you switch to playing as Abby in the game. It’s the natural cliffhanger point and Season 3 will start with the young Abby flashback just to confuse anyone who hasn’t played it. Can’t wait. 👍👍👍👍👍
They've remastered Part 2 again?
Joking aside, this looks incredibly faithful to the game, it's just a shame that I can't watch it as it's on Sky Atlantic in the UK, I can't get that on Virgin Media and NOW TV's streaming quality is diabolical
My guess is the final episode or scene of this season is where ‘that big thing’ happens thus leaving season 3 for the meat of the matter
I've seen the entire first season. I know it's a popular show but for me it's wasted potential. The game as a medium told this story better. I'll watch the second season, but I don't have high expectations.
I wonder if the last living PS Vita owner will make an appearance like in the game. Massive fail if not!
At one point I thought it was showing direct footage of the game, pretty impressive👏 I didn't watch season 1 because I thought Ellie was miscasted but I will now watch everything!
I don't think Joel's fate will have the same impact on the TV audience than it did on the game audience because the dynamic between Joel and Ellie was so much better done in the game.
I’d be down with most of the changes they made but Bella is terribly miscast. It just ruins it for me. It’s like if you ordered fillet steak in a restaurant and they served you liver. I’ve seen Bella in a few different things and they were fine. But not this.
Cailee Spaeny would have been a better choice. At least she vaguely resembles the character from the games.
Loving the trailer. Still can’t get my head around just how great Bella was in season one. Considering her character turns from someone beloved into an even worse person than Joel it will be interesting to see if she can maintain the impossibly high standards she set for herself during the course of the series.
I don't care much about this anymore.
Plus I CANNOT get over the fact that they picked a guy to play Joel who can't grow a damned beard.
I'm shocked that nobody has brought up the fact that it looks like Kaitlyn did nothing to try to look like Abby. Yes, they way overdid her look in the game, but I know there was plenty of talk when they cast her that she was going to have to bulk up. I know they technically can do their own take on the character, but I figured it would've at least been brought up that it looks like Kaitlyn is how she normally is.
@carlos82 I'll do what I did with season 1, wait for it all to be out and Now TV to do a deal on both the entertainment package AND the boost for 4k streaming, then use that month to binge stuff I've missed. But yeah, their standard streaming of horrific
@GreatAuk
If something as insignificant as someone having or not having facial hair is enough to get you riled up then how in the actual hell do you get through day to day life? Grow up.
I wonder how they’ll structure it? The game has lots of flashbacks and time jumps. Even after the end credits finished I was expecting ‘Six Months Later’ or something to appear on the screen.
@PegasusActual93
The beard was an iconic part of Joel's look.
Now they casted Dever for Abby, when we all know damned well that Abby is supposed to be buff and it's a core part of her personality/character.
The casting director has one job, but apparently they suck at it. If you're ok with that that's fine. I don't have to be though.
