Microsoft’s tried-and-trusted announcement embargo prevented EDENS ZERO from being confirmed for PS5 last week, but now it’s lifted and we have the official press release. The action RPG adaptation of a Hiro Mashima’s space fantasy outing will launch on Sony’s system next year, promising an “expanded” version of the original story – with additional scenes and content.

You’ll be able to assume the role of an array of different characters from the source material, each with a unique combat approach. “Master each character’s unique combat style, including close-range melee, long-range shooting, weapon-based attacks, and offensive magic,” the blurb reads. “Form your own party and dominate battles by switching characters to bring in whoever is most suited for the fight.”

You’ll be able to customise your characters with gear, ensuring they suit the needs of your specific playstyle. Furthermore, there’ll be different skills to unlock to give you additional advantages.

Perhaps most importantly for fans of the manga, the entire planet of Blue Garden will be explorable, and it’ll be filled with quests to complete and activities to interact with. As alluded to earlier, these will retell the story of the manga – but also incorporate extended plot beats for existing fans.

Hiro Mashima is the artist and writer behind Fairy Tail, which was adapted into a PS4 game back in 2020 and is also getting a sequel later this year. The original Fairy Tail, however, is a turn-based title – whereas EDENS ZERO is going for real-time combat instead.
