Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is now out in the wild, and Activision is currently enjoying the biggest traditional release the series has seen in years. With a whopping 306,460 concurrent players on Steam alone, it's enough to make you question what decade we are currently living in.
Many, many additional COD players are no doubt enjoying the game on console, but IGN used some SteamDB wizardry to put that player count in perspective. 2022's Modern Warfare 2 peaked at 263,174 on its opening weekend, and the admittedly lacklustre Modern Warfare 3 only managed 190,707 concurrents last year. Warzone 2.0 accrued a massive 491,670, but being a free-to-play battle royale mode, there is very little barrier to entry.

Definitely one of the best overall entries in the series in a very long time! REALLY enjoying this entry 💪🏽😁👍🏽
But but but but Gamepass is going to make the game lose sales!! And this is going to make them no money. Thats all i been hearing. The hate COD and MS can make people write for months and months is insanely wrong and dumb. Anyone will half a clue knew this game was going to do bonker numbers.
@HonestHick yep. This ∆. Spot on.
@11001100110zero one article wrote that PS will make more money from BO6 then MS. Now if they can show me how 30% of all copies sold on PS beats 70% to 100% on MS’s side makes less, i will buy them and their whole staff a 24K gold PS5. Yet they write things like that and sell it as a fact not satire. I only mention this cause the nonsense has to stop in order to have a healthy and respected industry among players and fans. Or the one that said, Gamepass numbers won’t go up and sales for the game will be down. It was written in a way to make it seem like it was bad no matter how people paid to play the game. That’s simply not how making money works.
I've been playing it and enjoying it. Granted I'm only playing it because its on Game Pass but still its a good time.
No i don't get Blops 6 and i don't think i will. But i watched Max played some MP domination mode and Hollow played the campaign. Gameplay still the same old COD but the campaign looks kinda interesting though.
@HonestHick
It absolutely will cost them sales, but that does not mean there still won't be high sale numbers. That 306,460 concurrent players number could have been 350,000 or 306,461.
Still can’t believe there’s been 6 Black Ops games. I have the first one on Wii 😂
@The_Wailing_Doom but the other players on Gamepass are paying to play the game. Also the question has to be asked. We know COD does 5 billion dollars in skins. They gave this number. So wouldn’t it seem like hey i didn’t have to pay $70 dollars to play BO6, it’s $20 a month with all these other games, let’s buy a skin or two? More money coming in. There is no way to down play money coming into the bank account. Be it on GP or digital and physical sales. What’s the old saying all money is green? We just live in a time when it seems like everyone on the internet is a genius in marketing, sales and profit margins, yet can’t even understand how a game like this largely rakes in the cash on any platform and delivery model it exists on. We also live in a time where no one that say’s and writes such dumb stuff comes back around and say’s you know what? I was wrong! It will just move to the next GP release or something else. Thats my beef with it all.
@HonestHick
On the plus side it's free on Xbox. The con is that you have to play it on Xbox.
@HonestHick everyone knew CoD would sell. It does every year.
What hasn’t happened is those playing on steam moving to GPU. There was 0 mention in the lead up to release that console sales were increasing.
It will make MS lots of money, but you would imagine they wanted to get people into their ecosystem but it looks like people are just carrying on playing how they usually would.
Yeah I got it friday. And yes, it's been grand playing something familiar to COD again for the first time in 5-6 years. Also the Zombies mode is back and great to play. And the leveling, progression and gun play in MP is good. The game over all is very polished and no bugs so far. The old SBMM is there of course, so that is still negative.
That's too bad. The maps absolutely suck. I used to be a huge fan, but ever since Activision decided every COD needs to be a Nuketown clone for the goldfish attention span players, COD started sucking hard. I quit this series for that and It's still a huge problem apparently.
But yeah, COD selling isn't anything new. People are thirsty for a good shooter and sadly COD can't deliver properly anymore, because anything else is a looter shooter/ live service/ colorful clown hero shooter/ whatever
Got it on gamepass with enough points for 2months, renewed 1 month. Finished the single player and thought it was awful story. MP is pretty good enjoying all maps so far. Prob play for another few weeks before getting bored.
That's great and all, but where is the Push Square review, if I can ask ?
306,460 people are playing the COD HQ app not Black Ops 6 alone. This launcher encapsulates numbers for MW2, MW3, Warzone and Black Ops 6. So yes while impressive, i'd say down on previous years. The general consensus is also the maps are a bit crap so once people have finished with the campaign i'd expect a quick decline in daily players.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@ATaco thats subjective. I play all my shooter on Xbox simply for the controller layout. The PS controller hurts my left thumb for FPS games and is bulky. I am way more accurate and faster on Xbox when it comes to fast shooters. So for me it’s a pro and pro in CODS case.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner i think Phil said it best. GP isn’t for everyone and that why we sell games also. Thats the beauty of choice. Use and support what works best for you. However there is a report showing that it is moving some GPU subs. So in time we will see. Remember the game has been out for less than a full week. Hard to tell what it will or won’t do over the holiday period.
As for everyone knowing it would sell good, not by what a lot of websites decided to publish to bash the game and Xbox. They made it seem like doom and gloom no matter and it’s simply a bad take that i called out, cause wether you are any of the big 3 and call them out in a ignorant way i kept the receipts. There needs to be accountability for bashing and writing articles of pure stupidity of the industry. Plus the game in my opinion is the best it’s been in all 3 modes since the 360 days. It’s reviewing well and that will always go a long way in keeping players engaged with it. Something that will lead to massive skins and DLC sales. Making even more money. The power of owning COD can’t be downplayed. Sony sure fought it in court knowing full well it being in a subscription service they don’t own for the next 10 years isn’t in their best interest. They said as much in the insomniac leak. Yet journalists write reports as if somehow Sony is in a better position when they said they are not.
@McTwist Spot on.
They were on the right track with the recent MW2 but all the ADHD riddled zoomies couldn't handle having to think before spamming their jump paddles and SMG's, so now we're back to how MW3 and this play.
Really hope IW stick to their vision from MW 2 for their next game.
@Smash41 only 60,000 were playing on the launcher on steam before BO6 launched. Do the math. Thats a lot of players in 3 days of launch.
@kungfumongoose
I did say that, but tbh it's kinda more that Activision THINKS people have short attention spans. Not really the case when you look at Apex or PUBG where you have a lot of downtime. You can't build suspense without downtime and people are thirsty for it. Activision isn't giving it and since IW is now Respawn Entertainment pretty much, I'm expecting the next best COD type game to come from them lol
@HonestHick Monthly peak for August and September was 150k with daily counts around 100-110k so yes impressive but not as impressive as this article makes out. For comparison Helldivers 2 had a weekend launch of 458,709 players. In days gone by CoD would have decimated HD2.
This tells you all you need to know about the demand for subscription based gaming
@Intr1n5ic "This games inclusion on a subscription service will likely inflate its concurrent player numbers because of the lower barrier to entry"
Sorry, how does COD's inclusion on Gamepass inflate Steams concurrent numbers where you have to buy the game?
@carlos82 People playing on gamepass on PC don't contribute to concurrent players?
@Intr1n5ic they don't contribute to Steams concurrent players
@carlos82 I wasn't aware of that, I wrongly assumed it tracked all active players. That's actually even more impressive then.
Edit - I'll delete my previous comment as it's wholly inaccurate for the pc platform.
Question, is anyone finding that the dual sense controller triggers aren't working in game? Either that or I've not turned on the setting??
@Skeletor85 I hope ! XD
Joke apart, reading this review really interests me, so...
Where is it ? xD
@Smash41 the numbers for both of those games are impressive. But COD is doing great numbers in just a few days time. Plus they have the game in more places. HD2 did really well on PC but fell like a rock quickly off the charts on console. COD will grow insanely the rest of this month and dominate throughout the holiday season. I said it on a few post but this is the best COD for me, since Xbox 360 days. For the record the video i watched showed COD at 60K before the launch of BO6. So the peak was an impressive start. Plus Steam won’t show the players on PC on GP. 😀
@ATaco pc has gamepass also
