Naughty Dog has dropped its PS5 Pro patch for The Last of Us 2 Remastered a whole two weeks before the upgraded Sony system is even available, updating the game to version number 1.2.0. Of course, you're not going to actually feel the effects of the patch if you download it to a base PS5, but there are some tweaks and fixes included, which we shall detail further down below.
If you are planning on getting a PS5 Pro on 7th November 2024, the developer has provided a fairly straightforward way of understanding what the patch adds when running on the new Sony console:
- New rendering mode added that takes advantage of PlayStation® Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)
- New “Pro” mode renders at 1440p, with PSSR upscaling output to 4K, while maintaining a target of 60 fps
- Performance and Fidelity rendering modes are still available and provide smoother experience and high framerates compared to the original PS5
In a recent PlayStation Blog post, lead programmer Vincent Marxen said the following about the PS5 Pro enhancement: "Whether it will be your first time experiencing these stories, or a chance to jump in again, we hope all fans of The Last of Us enjoy experiencing this amazing way to play." Don't forget that the PS4 to PS5 upgrade path for The Last of Us 2 is still available at £10 / $10, so if you never upgraded your PS4 copy the first time around, you could theoretically go from a base PS4 version to a PS5 Pro edition in one go — that should represent a huge upgrade.
Please see below the full update 1.2.0 patch notes, including fixes for base PS5 owners:

Why would they give out a PS5 pro up-date to the base PS5, seems a bit redundant don't it?
@Oram77 I mean, that's how these things work. It will detect which system you're playing on.
@Oram77 It also includes fixes and updates the base PS5 can use.
@Oram77 It also fixes other things, and it's an update for the entire game. Just how this works, the game itself will detect what system it is running on.
Okay but seriously guys/gals and everything in between, I love TLoU but how long are we going to spend George Lucasing these games? Ok maybe that's not quite the correct comparison but like, they look fine, they play fine... let it go.
On which platforms?
@LiamCroft @get2sammyb Don't worry both I've got my PS5 pro on pre order, so I'm looking forward to replaying through my catalog on it, starting with Stellar Blade!
Does this patch fix the story?
@Fishnpeas 🥱
@Fishnpeas 4 years later and still this, nothing better to do huh?
I think we have already been upscaling from 1440p to 4K, using either FSR or checker board rendering. On PC DLSS as well.
This is not a miracle it’s a slightly better upscaler than what we have now and Sonys own one called PSSR.
Anyone would think this is new and a miracle , it’s been going for years.
I’m currently playing dead space remake, at 60fps it’s about 1080p upscales to 4K using EA frostbite engine. This is nothing that new.
Even your top end TVs have great upscalers in them. I know my Sony X95L does to the point you can hardly tell the difference in most circumstances in most games.
Considering the potential additional volume of patches that need to go out before 7th Nov, its not that surprising they have already started.
Also journalists etc who are provided early machines for articles / analysis need the patches up and running early too.
@OldGamer999 upscaling via checkerboarding is nothing like PSSR.
And FSR is the poor relation to PSSR and the market leader DLSS which use machine learning and AI.
The picture you get on both PSSR will be almost indistinguishable from native and in some cases even better. The smaller power overhead will allow for better performance and crucially to be able to add more detail to the scene.
Yes DLSS has been round a while on PC but this is the first similar implementation on consoles and is something to be excited about.
@Fishnpeas this comment is pretty tired, my dude.
@Yusuo @Yusuo I spent £70 on it, yes I am very bitter, such is my right to be over a faulty purchase.
@AgentGuapo My wallets anguish will never tire.
@Fishnpeas 70 four years ago… if the story didn’t work for you time to let it go. Shoot I’ve spent more than that on a dinner I didn’t like before I don’t post on yelp about it four years later.
Nice. I managed to pick up the Part 1 remake, new, for £5 when my local GAME closed down (RIP physical media...), so I'll be jumping into that at some point. The £10 upgrade for Part II seems fair so I'll play through it again and check out the roguelike mode.
@OldGamer999
PSSR has impressed DF, and they have seen it running in person; and just looking at a few shots is enough to know that PSSR is more than 'slightly better' - just take a look at the improvements in the Last of us 2 and FF Rebirth.
We will also likely see improvement in PSSR as we move through the next couple of years as Sony continually improve it.
Current consoles (Pre PS5 Pro) can only use software based upscalers such as FSR, which are not in the same league as Hardware based DLSS or PSSR etc.
DF's take is that PS6 (and next XBox etc) will be very much reliant on hardware based upscaling (in Sonys case PSSR) as GPUs will not continue to see as large an increase in raw power between generations going forwards. We may not even see a big jump moving from PS5 Pro to PS6.
Also, I have a recent Sony TV (4k 120hz HDMI2.1), which has the upscaling tech included - it barely makes a difference when upscaling PS5. If anything turning it up too high tends to over sharpen the image slightly imo.
I can certainly tell a big difference on my TV if I swap between Graphics and performance modes - which i sometimes do out of interest even though i am 100% a 60fps gamer.
The TV upscaler seems to make a much better (and very much appreciated) job when used on poorer inputs / TV type signals such as HD channels.
@Fishnpeas 😂😂 £70 - it was £50 everywhere else
I'm just surprised that the PS5 is such an utter disaster and underperformed piece of hardware that Sony made. They hyped it up at the time to be so powerful. Also there have been not many PS5 only games in its lifespan (Even the limited PS5 games are unable to run at Ultra quality without sacrifices), its obvious the hardware is not what Sony made it out to be, and the PS5 Pro is what Sony should have done from the onset and they know this. Paying $800AUS for a PS5 console that cannot even run a game at quality 60fps is just embarrassing, no wonder Sony is fixing this with a PS5 Pro. And even then I heard Alan Wake with RT will still be only 30fps on PS5 Pro, what a joke.
@Rich33
I did mine own FF VII rebirth tests.
I stood still including in the DF photo and in different areas.
And switched from 30fps which is about native 4K and 60fps which is upscaled from 1080p.
And with my TV doing its thing I could hardly tell the difference apart from a slightly sharper picture being honest.
Now either I’m doing it all wrong or my Sony top end TV 65” correct viewing distance for 4K is upscaling that 1080p that is already upscaled and making nearly as good as the 30fps native 4K image.
I got no blur image like DF did and I would love to got to the DF studio and see how they got this blurred images.
Was they using a standard Monitor that has no upscaling of its own.
Was they moving around to create a blur.
If I could get an amazing difference with my little silly test then I would say so and be more excited for the PS5 Pro.
@Digit2021
Yes the Alan Wake 30fps RT footage was what made the biggest difference and looked really good and better than the 60fps PS5 Pro upgrade comparison.
The big but it’s only RT at 30fps.
This generation is a total technology duck up, with so many developers chasing so many different things and tricks and smoke and mirrors.
And Sony being smart have thought I know let’s release £700 console to sort of help some of this mess out and get our fans to pay for it.
I'd like the ability to walk in to a Games shop and request to see two screens side by side, one on base PS5 and one on Pro. So that i can actually see the difference in person, rather than through my phone where i see virtually no difference.
But with the death of such specialist shops i'm gonna wait on PS6 rather than spend £700 on something i cant see in person.
Maybe Currys could do it? My local one has a tech guy who likes to help.
@get2sammyb 😎
I love when Sammy goes through a "I'm not humouring this muck," phase.
On a relevant note, I forgot how close we are to the Pro release.
The big question is, use it right away or put it up for Christmas? 🤔🤔🤔
