God of War Ragnarok released on PC recently, and despite including a new option to scale back companion AI puzzle hints, players still aren't happy about the situation.
A newly launched mod for the action RPG, named Please Shut Up (Companion Mute Mod), pretty much does what it says on the tin. It removes more than 1,500 lines of dialogue from companion characters, drastically reducing the amount of "helpful" support from Kratos' allies.
Not only does the mod remove the loathed puzzle hints, it also takes out many other recurring gameplay tips. For example, characters telling you to Shield Strike, to block attacks, and informing you you're suffering from a status effect are all stripped out.
It's pretty funny that the community is putting in so much work to "fix" this aspect of Ragnarok, but if it results in a better experience for some, more power to them.
This hasn't been the only noteworthy mod for the game; another recent one removed Sony's PSN account requirement for Ragnarok, though this was taken down to avoid the ire of PlayStation.

Sony needs to put these shut the **** up options in all of their games 😆
Ohh, when it comes to Playstation??? And isn't there mod to remove Atreus??? I consider of buying GoW: Ragnarok but these are necessary mods.
Problem is a lot of these big Sony games are designed around the expectation that somebody is going to be flapping their lips constantly. It's why they constantly shift you over to forced walking.
I loved the puzzle hints. GoW puzzles are generally uninteresting busy work so the tips helped me get back to the fun part of the game quicker.
@djlard
That mod to remove Atreus and Ironwood is gonna feed families
Every game needs this mod.
Nope, doesn't go far enough. We need a remaster, damnit!
Maybe Doc will play it now lol
Guess the PC crowd didn't want to hear "You're on fire brother! It will pass!" 5 billion times in combat. I don't blame them!
I'm more surprised Sony hasn't added a removal or a complete stop to helpful verbal tip options the same way they do for written text. It should be standard in gaming nowadays.
I don't get why people hate it so much. As games go closer into the realm of realism it makes sense that people are going to talk more. People talk all the time, everywhere. Just look at us, unable to stfu in the comments. If you're going to get attacked obviously your son is going to scream at you to watch out. Maybe the puzzle hints I can see being annoying but it also felt nice when the characters would compliment you for figuring it out quickly.
@ATaco I guess because some people don't like "hand holding".
Heck, people skip cutscenes in story driven games.
@mountain_spider You kidding? Sony thinks the playerbase is a bunch of five year olds that can't count. It's no wonder they haven't given an option.
i wish more (maybe all) games would do like Fallout 4 and have a selection of approved mods for the game.
Exactly what I always wanted for these games.
They just never shut up.
And if you wanna explore a bit: "Over here", "Where are you going?" etc.
Plus always pointing out the most obvious things...
This should be a feature of all their future titles.
@Nepp67 Wheres the "kidding"
that's the point of my post they have never added the option to just mute it like you can mute all the written hints. Even if they consider everybody to be five-year-old they have always had the ability to shut off helpful information like guidance after X time, but they have never removed it for verbal talking. I see it as dialogue padding. Like when the character in the game was telling you maybe we should go visit X location or X person. If you already have the option for written information did not display.
The natural progression should be removed the verbal hints and tips. It's kind of dumb to have it for written text or pop-up help but still not disabled for verbal.
@WizzNL
I guess the only time I do find constant blabbing to be annoying is when someone starts repeating the same thing, like when Alloy would say "I'll need this for later" or whatever almost every time she picked something off the ground. Luckily they did wind up patching that out.
I’d be interested in seeing a mod that extracts all of the dialogue from the game completely, but still keeps cutscenes. So, characters just kind of look at each other for a long, uncomfortable amount of time.
It’s not that I dislike the dialogue. I just….wanna see that.
So basically thousands of Mimir dialogues with his annoying accent lol
This permanent talking in GoW was the main reason for me to skip Ragnarök.
@MBalz_EsHari Think he’d be waiting for the Atreus nude mod.
@Steel76 Probably the most annoying thing about dialogue in some of the Playstation games, whenever you're just wanting to explore a bit you have to listen to "uhhhh u kno ur going dah wrong way right??" Like shut up, I'm aware of that.
@mountain_spider It's either a massive oversight or the devs thinking that the dialogue is so natural the player won't notice it.
I honestly wouldn't have guessed there were that many lines dedicated to hints or battle indications. Regardless, that's a mod I definitely would have installed during my playthrough had it been possible.
I’m starting to dislike PC gamers lol
The way it’s meant to be played & a common pc W.
Aloy badly needed this in Forbidden West.
@Mikey856
Starting? You're probably the biggest example of a PC hater on this site 😂
@carlos82
They won't. Modern AAA games are all made for the lowest common denominator. True challenging games with a proper skill ceiling don't really exist anymore in that space except for the ones that are built around the challenge like Returnal, Souls.
Spider-Man 2 PS2 was amazing to learn and combine all types of free running, tricks and swinging.
The new ones are just pure autopilot almost. You can do it with one hand on the controller like Assassin's Creed games.
Ads: OMG LOOK INSANE FREE RUNNING GUYS!
Reality: one hand on controller, one hand scrolling on phone
This modder is doing hero's work! GoW Rag was great but the constant hints were incredibly annoying and ruined the fun of the puzzles. Il
One of the reasons why I have left Horizon Forbidden West languishing in my backlog; I need to hype myself to get through all the hints and unnecessary talking
@Steel76 no I was ambivalent to the so called master race but now I’m just getting plain annoyed by them. Sony shouldn’t grace the Steam store with its titles.. let them wallow in there trough of shovelware 👍
Finally the mod we need.
@Mikey856 loud minorities stand out. The guys you see in YouTube comment sections or on news sites are usually the worst representation of the community. Actual PC gamers I speak to rarely bring up they play on pc so they’re pretty chill.
Being able to remove this should be standard. There were times the companions would say "you can cut that", "throw your axe there" etc and I havent even had the chance to look around. Same with HFW. I love Aloy but she has no patience for my *****. Lol.
@Yousef- they are pretty toxic I tell you. Just another thing that puts me off PC gaming. I’m not interested in modding games either, I just enjoy them for what they are
@ATaco because games shouldnt be realistic. in other news i think ive finally been convinced to make the jump to pc.
I prefer how the characters in ff13 talk to each other people need to take hints
Probably in the minority, but apart from the overly quick puzzle hints i love the way the characters talk to one another (or atreus to himself when hes on his own) - it just makes the game far, far, more realistic and helps to establish the story. It really helps the game stand out imo.
@Mikey856 you dislike pc players because of mods?
Now if they can only remove all of the Atreus bits…
I wish Aloy was more verbose. I never had a clue what to do or what I'd just done or what I was currently doing in those games.
@RBRTMNZ
LoL You loved the hints?? In Ragnarok it was known for giving the player major puzzle hints as soon as a player got to one.
I get not liking puzzles in games, but that takes all the satisfaction away n should just be a movie at that point, or a spam Square simulator.
@Mikey856
Go look at some mods for GTA5 on YouTube and tell me that you think MODs can't enhance games and make them more fun than the original game.
I am surprissed we havent gotten more of Kratos being replaced by Homer Simpson who is cosplaying as Kratos by now for Ragnarok. They went all out on the Simpsons mod for the 2018 game and replaced every character as Simpsons characters and it was sooo funny
@R_L_Stine I played the game on give me god of war difficulty. Almost all enemies have more poise than you so it fundamentally changes the game. It becomes like a more dynamic version of souls combat. And I beat all 72 bosses. It was a ***** load of very challenging and fun gameplay. Gna alone took almost four hours. For me the puzzles were just busy work for me to get back to the part of the game I liked.
Good PC image but it just needs the black PC logo. Looks off to me. I know it fits like PS5 logo. Just a me thing doesn't matter.
Yeah those lines make sense but only as a toggle not a forced on the player thing or like Strangers of Paradise or even PS3/360 era games did a button to 'look over there', 'ask for a hint'. Not force it on the player. I get for casuals sure but they can ask for a hint or work it out. If they don't understand red for explosives, yellow/white paint but do words then visuals they forget and have more important/dull things in their lives to remember instead then that's on them then word reliance.
People that don't get puzzles/tropes as a newcomer that's fine but for us more versed in games why force it? Also same with PC audience not just versed in console but just game tropes in general.
Ratchet 2016 I just muted the game & subtitles as I didn't care what they had to say. Can turn helpdesk off in older entries but oh they won't in others/modern entries or just that entry? Same audience but oh we just have to not do it this time all the extra dialogue, ammo pick up visual aids and help dialogue because laziness to edit it/rushed and half the game to remake. XD Sure..... But they had time to add 60FPS on PS5 for an update. Like come on. No excuses.
I play old/modern games as if listening to podcast/other videos/music if I really don't care what is going on or don't need subtitles/do & read them instead while playing.
Racing games could use subtitles yet still don't but varies per game still I guess? But can skip it & just play even if some tutorials/dialogue can help with commentators/other stuff.
I don't play Sony games anymore or at anyway so like it matters to me but some devs need to implement toggles again.
What happened to PS3/360 era COD/Gears gore or swear filters/other toggles, did devs get lazy/not have time so no edits to audio/blood effects (unless it's a core feature/arcadey like Splatterhouse 2010, etc.), they stop doing them. TV shows to streaming. Movies later then cinema edits?
Youtubers that do edit it do either for the sake of it or for humour sake.
Neptunia Sisters vs Sisters think it was could have had a word toggle but were too lazy to do that or oh the rating won't change & we won't offer a toggle just to alter it we will just reword things which is much more work & bring rating down to look good.
I can pick up Conception PS4 port (bought in EB) & it's R rated, can't get Gal Gun physical because EB/Gamestop wouldn't sell it so digital only (digital really stops people anyway) & was R rated as well but some devs besides some censoring or other factors feel it will. XD
People can pick up any older aged audience games on older consoles & no configured parental controls or just buy anything & staff at the stores not stop the purchase but oh devs will get a few sales from ratings.
Ratings have a place but oh we have to alter it just encase & not look at rating (anime, Conker/others like it or realistic looking) & devs/pubs don't want complaints.
Animated had many purposes over the years 1920s till now.
Simplifying for younger people when some of us won't mind teen/mature or even some valid words of old meaning even if it offends those that take the new meanings into consideration. It's a toggle/if they can't use the settings that's on them.
I don't mind B swords in Disagea. Don't in Neptunia but to please an audience I guess.
Is there a mod to play GoW 2018 with the graphics engine of Ragnarok? Ragnarok is one of the worst game I ever played on PS5 while the OG from 2018 was one of the best one, a true masterpiece. So maybe we can find a compromise here.
@ATaco Let me know when someone is following you around repeating the same lines over and over. I mean, I'm married too but even she ain't that bad.
@Mikey856 why because they have the ability to play a game in the way they choose?
@BIG3 Very true. I loved forbidden west, but dam. I do think there should be a option in the menu for handholding mode or something. These are rated M games. I think people who are playing these games have two brain cells to rub together lol.
Is there a mod to remove player death? I never got far in the PS5 version.
@8bitOG like I said clearly, just one of the reasons I don’t like pc GAMING
@Mikey856 ok, it's just a strange thing to hate on so I was just clarifying
@RBRTMNZ ah yes, great game design that.
Since we aren't capable of designing interesting puzzles, let's put some arbitrary roadblock from time to time which requires no brainpower whatsoever.
It isn't even the only major issue this game has and it got perfect scores everywhere nonetheless 🤢
@clvr oh we are not a same page here. I would give the game a 10 and think it’s not just a masterpiece but also one of the very best games ever made. A few mid puzzles doesn’t at all detract from everything it does well. For me, it has the best melee combat in any game ever.
@RBRTMNZ you definitely need to branch out and play Bayonetta or DMC then, because GOW's combat system is mid at best.
The camera is completely at odds with the type of combat it wants to be, relying on stupid red arrows to tell you when hits are coming, instead of, you know, letting you see the action. Kratos Is magically magnet pulled to enemies, which is a cardinal sin of any good character action game, as the player must be the one dictating the rhythm of combat.
The controls suck, but I know I'm in a minority there; "a few mid puzzles" are actually an incredible annoyance thwt shouldn't even be in the game to begin with. What's the point of having a puzzle for pacing, if you're just gonna give me the answer? It ruins the pace instead of improving it, because it just amounts to literal busywork.
The gear system is completely redundant and tacked on, included only because you can't have a AAA game these days without one.
I have played DMC and Bayonetta. They're fine. The combat feels super repetitive to me. In every battle you're generally just throwing out as many different combos as possible, not in any intentional way based on situation, but instead to increase variety and run up the score. It rarely if ever matters what you choose to do at any given time. GoW on high difficulty requires me to be incredibly intentional and thoughtful about using my full tool kit and making sure to use the right moves in the right situations.
I would tell you to try GoW on high difficulty so that you can experience how perfectly designed the combat can be but some of the things you wrote make me feel like you have a skill issue. You can be in complete control of the action in GoW as long as you're smart about spacing and flexible in your approach. The things you wrote make it sound like you struggled with both at standard difficulty and like you're mad at the game for asking you to master these skills.
