Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter XDefiant is not dead, and you shouldn't think it is. That's despite persistent rumours of a worryingly small pool of players and CEO Yves Guillemot himself admitting to investors that it had underperformed "to a much lesser extent [than Star Wars Outlaws]", which probably sounds better in context.
Remaining defiant (sorry), XDefiant producer Mark Rubin has hit back at the naysayers, stating there is virtually nil danger of the game dying in the foreseeable future. On X, Rubin wrote: "To be crystal clear, there are NO plans to shut down after season 4. I've literally been in meetings as of last week to discuss our Year 2 plans."
Expounding, Rubin admitted that "we have done very little marketing, so yes, our numbers are down" but maintains that this is all going according to plan. Once the game is in a better place (still not reassured), Rubin explains that "[we'll] do bigger spends on marketing to bring new players to the game and to bring back players that have left". See? Not dead.
Does a game seem more or less alive when the developers insist it isn't dead? As Ubisoft opted not to release on the most popular PC platform, Steam, we can't even use our usual tricks to check for a pulse. Just anecdotally, are you or your friends currently playing XDefiant? Let us know how healthy the game is in the comments section below.

There's this saying that has a metaphor about the relation between fire and smoke, not necessary connected to this in any way.
Yeah, these games needs a minimum playing (paying) userbase to keep on going. Since we're not privy to that info, it's hard to tell how dire the situation is. But once the general opinion becomes that it has the stank of failure, then it's hard to get rid of it.
I have been playing XDefiant regularly since launch. Being a huge CoD fan back in the PS3/4 era I love hopping into a couple matches at the end of my gaming session. I’m only like level 36 I think but playing a round or two most days has been a blast. The UI is so much cleaner and neater than CoD’s heinous UI. It’s a stark contrast. It’s also very light on pushing spending especially for being a F2P game. Definitely recommend it for some free, quick, fun.
Just smile and wave boys 😊

and continue spending money on those
microtransactions 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
nah , it’s dead and not worth the time waste . The only way to get that old COD feeling back is for COD devs to bring it back. i don’t think i’ve ever played a game that’s legitimately “replaced” or filled the void of another
@Can-You-Believe-Sith
As someone who has sampled numerous free to play games over the years this game is FAR from the most egregious when it comes to microtransactions. It's no COD killer but it's a lot of fun in short bursts.
@nomither6 I agree. This game is very mediocre. It's not bad but it's nothing special either.
Rather than chase a trend it seems more worthwhile to me to be the trend, as it are the trendsetters who most of the time have the most staying power (e.g. Hearthstone, Dot, LoL, PUBG, Fortnite, CoD, WoW, Overwatch ...)
Trendsetters don't always do "it" first, but then they do it first in a polished way
I've played this on and off since launch it's actually pretty fun but it's definitely losing players fast and they've still got netcode issues that have been there since the first beta.
I tried it at launch for a while (because free) and it simply didn't feel good to play. They had years of development and betas and feedback and still launched a shooter with egregious netcode and hit registration issues.
If you can't compete with THE single most important aspect of a multiplayer title, why even bother? Nothing else was nearly good enough to overshadow those fundamental flaws.
This story aged well…
