Update (Wed 9th Oct, 2024 11:45 BST): The refurbished PS5 consoles have now appeared on Sony's official PS Direct store, strictly limited to just one per customer.
You can pick up a refurbished console for £389.99, making this the cheapest way to get your hands on a PS5 directly from Sony. As we mentioned below, you'll receive "a product that works like new with genuine PlayStation replacement parts (as needed) that has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and tested":
Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. Please read our FTC Disclosure for more information.
Remember that, until 14th October, the PS Direct store is also running a promotion on new PS5 Slim consoles, so now's a great time to save on a new system whichever route you opt for.
Original Article (Wed 11th Sep, 2024 10:15 BST): Sony will soon begin selling refurbished PS5 consoles and controllers on its official PlayStation Direct website, allowing customers to make a saving of around £90 / $100 over a brand new model. Listings on the page are tagged as "coming soon", with a refurbished PS5 console with a disc drive set to be sold at £389 / $400.
If you opt for a refurbished system, you'll get "a product that works like new with genuine PlayStation replacement parts (as needed) that has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and tested". You will receive all the cables and paperwork you need for a PS5, and it comes with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty. While there's no guarantee the PS5 you receive will be in tip-top condition — the site says "Certified Refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections" — it will have been cleaned and tested to make sure it works before it's shipped out to you.
"All Certified Refurbished products will come with the necessary accessories, cables and manuals. All PlayStation Certified Refurbished products are packaged in its own branded Certified Refurbished packaging and will be sent to you with the 1 day express or 2 day standard shipping options available on PlayStation Direct."
The same goes for refurbished PS5 DualSense controllers, with the standard white and black pads selling at $60, and other colours like purple and pink priced slightly higher at $65. The refurbished PS5 controllers only appear on PlayStation Direct in the USA; it's not clear yet if they'll be available in other territories. A 12-month warranty is again included with the controllers, just like the main consoles.
Since manufacturer Sony has only ever done PS5 price increases rather than drops, this is one route you could take to get a current-gen machine for slightly cheaper. Would you opt for a refurbished console? Let us know in the comments below.

THE PRICE CUT FINALLY CAME WHO SAID SONY ARE ARROGANT AGAIN!!!! /s
Dunno if I'd trust a used PS5, even directly from Sony.
Recycling is good for the world, so thumbs up
Oh Sony you do spoil us...🤭
Well, it is good that those working parts are not just thrown on some garbage mountain. So, well done for that. They have warranty so what do you care.
Are they selling any refurbished PS5 Pros by any chance
Hrmmm, could this mean that they will offer an upgrade program for current PS5 owners who want a Pro, like how Apple does with its devices, which could make the cost of an upgrade significantly cheaper?
I will start a business of selling refurbished refurbished consoles
Why is the PS Direct link to the US store and not UK? It baffles me why this site seems to be US-centric.
What is the 1day express or 2day standard shipping? I can't find anything saying there's a choice. Usually shipping is free, is there now a paid 'express' delivery guaranteeing next day?
yknow when I said I was hoping the announcement of a PS5 Pro would end up driving the original PS5's price down, I didn't think it'd happen this soon XD
Cosmetic imperfections don't really bother me in the slightest as long as the console itself (and the games on it) runs fine so I might actually use this as a means of getting my own PS5 down the line 😁
only 5 dollar discount on the controllers is insane
I think this is a good way to handle it. Environmentally safe, and an affordable option for those who can't otherwise and you get a warranty so you are safe for 12 months.
This is a good thing. Price decrease and recycling machines. Who’s this not good for?
I have two controllers with some drift issues. I tried to contact Sony last year to see if they are willing to offer to fix or anything. ( I was willing to send at my own cost and pay for all). I just don't like wasting anything; I want to fix it first over buying new.
I hope that means they offer some kind of service over the warranty time.
I owned a refurbished before and they work pretty fine.
Sure, it was a refurbished 3DS, but still.
I think that this is a great idea.
But...
It also makes it less likely that anyone will buy a Pro. As suggested in an above comment this might be an indication of some kind of trade-in scheme though.
@DualWielding
The saving isnt worth it imo. I'd buy a new one instead 🤷♂️ But I do like the principle of it. Just not enough of a saving for me to consider getting a refurbished controller.
Might be time to jump on ps n grab one so can play astro n ratchet 😎
Or buy one from CEX and get a 2 year warranty.
I see so many people online stupidly thinking they will be getting more than this trading in their launch units to buy a pro. They definitely won’t be getting a good trade in value now.
@sanderson72 don't buy anything from CEX. They are ripoff merchants who clearly target people who don't know any better.
@JohntheRaptor They can be but I got my boxed slim Vita from them and it was absolutely mint. The rip off part, for me, seems to be the £2.50 per item P&P rather than bundling everything together.
@Czar_Khastik your comment is a little old but pretend you just posted it five seconds so I don’t look silly pretty please oh yeah here’s my reply: make sure you don’t sell em too cheap or else a different person will leach off and make a business out of selling refurbished refurbished refurbished systems!
I used to be wary of refurbished stuff till I bought my Alienware 4K OLED monitor a few days ago. It’s refurbished, came in the original box with all the cables and accessories. It’s in mint condition and cost me $200 less than the price of a new unit. I’d say that’s a great deal and I’ll be looking for more refurbished electronics stuff from now on. Good decision by Sony.
Nice.
If I have enough money again, I want another PS5 Fat machine with cheaper price so I can upgrade again with SSD 2TB.
@Yousef- That is a potential hazard to be aware of. In the meantime I need to sell my sealed Concord copies because there is no space for the refurbished consoles in my apartment
I actually got my Wii U "refurbished" directly from Nintendo and never had a single issue with the thing ( aside from the giant software droughts ), so I'd be inclined to trust this.
I guess it is A way to get a cheaper PS5. $400 is a good price if everything's in good shape.
@CrashBandicoat Neither, the controller and flash memory are soldered onto the motherboard with thermal pads to conduct heat away via one of the large metal shields inside which sandwich the mainboard. It was a completely custom solution so it doesn't really resemble anything seen on PC. There shouldn't be any issues with cooling, but there might be issues caused by a lifetime of constant writes from the PS5's game capture function.
I'm more curious to see how the sales of the PlayStation 5 pro are will be since tomorrow, third-party vendors can now sell them like Amazon, etc.
@StrickenBiged Highly unlikely given Sony's recent consumer friendly efforts lol.
Edit - Im selling my fat black ps5, any takers 😃
Imagine being a kid and seeing certified refurbished on your new xmas gift ps5. At least give the parents options to get a box without that on it...
Remastering old games, selling refurbished hardware... they should also do garage sales for a full trifecta.
Hopefully in a few years they can put a stamp on their budget:
"There was a hole here. It's gone now"
@AhmadSumadi Folks who want a bigger discount on Dualsenses than 5 measly bucks
@Shinnok789 this
Cheaper, comes with a stand and has a bigger cooling system/quieter fan. My PS5 slim sounds like a jet engine with the tiny NMB fan since day 1.
@DualWielding Came here just to say exactly that. It's ridiculous.
They only have the disc version for refurbished. I wanted to see the price of a digital version. Don't think it's cheap enough for me tho.
I have my launch PS4 & 5 and both still work perfectly (PS5 is still as silent as ever). In my experience Sony seem to have left unreliability behind with the PS3. Or maybe I’m just lucky 😂
Amy idea if Sony Direct will ever come to Ireland?
So, locate the defect, repair and clean? Exactly what happens when you send your console in for repairs... Don't get why people are fretting. They probably just push out a new console for the customers that sent in for repairs that aren't quickly repairable. It's good they take the time to repair them eventually and don't bin them.
Sony NOW selling refurbished PS5 Consoles! I'm sorry, but it's not a new or recent thing, my brother got is kids a refurbed PS5 direct from Sony last year....
This news story makes it sound like it's a brand new thing 🤨
These should be a lot cheaper in my opinion. Sony already made the sale for the machine the first time around and surely they want as many people as possible joining their ecosystem.
