Early indications are that the PS5 Pro is finding its audience as Sony intended. This week we learned that, despite costing twice as much, the PS5 Pro sold around 13k more units than the PS4 Pro at launch in Japan.
And in the USA, the first data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella is that it’s keeping pace with its mid-gen predecessor.
“PS5 Pro had a solid start,” he wrote on Bluesky, “with units in the same ballpark as PS4 Pro’s launch, but I'll break that down in more detail in a few weeks.” He didn’t clarify whether the PS5 Pro’s launch was higher or lower than the PS4 Pro, but either way, his post implies there’s not much in it.
It’s worth remembering that the PS4 Pro launched for $399.99 in 2016, while the PS5 Pro is $699.99. You have to factor in inflation, of course, but it’s still a big difference.
Sony said last week that pre-orders for the PS5 Pro were slightly stronger than the PS4 Pro, and it reiterated that it doesn’t expect the device to be its main hardware seller. The PS4 Pro accounted for approximately 15% of all PS4 sales, so it’ll be very satisfied with a similar result here.
It looks like, despite all the talk of stock availability and scalpers losing money, everything’s going to plan, then.

@Loamy You almost had me there!
@Loamy Sadly true, after my PS5 Pro arrived the next day I found Hermen in my back garden nicking the dog! 💔
@Loamy I mean, looking at HFW right now… maybe a new dog for Christmas won’t be so bad 😉
@Loamy does it come with a dog lead though? Or is it a ridiculous “optional” £100 add on! You never know these days!
Predictable. If memory serves, PS4 Pro was also easy to get at launch and only became scarce months later. Curious if the 5 Pro follows the same trajectory.
That is odd considering all the complaining about barely being able to afford eggs and all.
I do wonder if the 5 Pro is lacking some of the hesitance that existed with the first mid gen refresh. Kinda seemed like a lot of people weren't sure about that in the console space first time around but perhaps have warmed up to it now.
As a pro purchaser who upgraded, this is kinda good news. Maybe well see some actual leverage of the added power. If not, atleast it looks better and supports better wifi.
Its not gonna be worth it to 85% of people, but the 15% are all it needs.
PS5 Pro, you what it is now.
This is an Xbox. 🤣🤣🤣
Is there a definitive answer yet as to whether the PS4 image enhancement tech inside the Pro is machine learning-based or not? I’m curious if it’s a case of ‘this is what you get’, or if it’ll improve over time like machine learning based solutions all do—PSSR, DLSS and so forth.
Get ready for these sales numbers to dive off a cliff.
Get 'em before the tariffs do!
It’s almost like Sony know their market and customer base after all these years.
@Loamy @DonJorginho
"I'd recommend upgrading to the Dog Pro"
Why bother - you wouldnt be able to tell the difference (dog pro just has a very slightly glossier coat, and slightly more reflective eyes), and it would be such a waste of money. Just wait for next gen dog in 2 years time (it will apparently be 10x the upgrade), or give up on dogs and upgrade to P(uss) C(at) now.
@OldGamer999 my PS5 pro started acting funny. Loaded it up and it simply said:
"I'm an Xbox"
and so, I said:
"No, i'm an Xbox"
This went on for several hours with the Television and my phone joining in, as well.
I guess that means there are roughly the same number of people who want the best console they can get.
I'd wager there is a lot of cross-over with people who bought 4 pro and 5 pro.
After a week of playing PS5 Pro I can tell you I am far happier with it, than I was in the 1st week of PS4 Pro at launch (pre-empting a question : I did have a 4k TV).
I think it took 6 months with PS4 Pro before I was really pleased I bought it.
@Medic_alert
I certainly am one of those.
@Loamy you made me spill my coffee 🤣⚰️
@Rich33
You crazy fool
Dog is an Xbox 🤣
I remember buying a second hand PS4 Pro with 14 games for £250 off my mate, I'm not sure that deal will happen again, lol. I put a ssd in it and repasted cpu/heatsink with artic mx6 and gelid solution thermal pads for the memory chips and to be honest I think only the ssd had some slight improvements like maybe less texture pop in? and there was thermal paste push-out effect (thermal cycling) but it did dry out quite rapid on my machine. PS5 teardown looks rough for factory thermal paste but I suppose taking into consideration the factory at full load on production line runs the robots are not as careful or precise as the human touch lol.
Of course it did when even the biggest Xbox shills like kidsmoove and Destin ran hate campaigns for a month straight on why its the worst thing in gaming ever...????...... and then all preordered it anyway lol.
Every time opened their mouth they were making more people aware it exists.
I will buy one, when Sony comes to their senses and makes it 700 euro in Europe. 800 euro is a ripoff, WHEN ITS 700 DOLLARS in the US.
@Rich33 I agree , I didn't really think there was much support for the ps4 pro in its lifetime , I can actually tell the difference between a ps5 and a pro game
@lazarus11
Yeah. I just wrote a much longer version of this but the upgrade per game seems better too - when the patch / implementation is done right of course, but the same could be said last gen.
4 to 4 Pro - visual upgrade due to Resolution boost (maybe an odd additional setting), OR more consistent framerate.
4 to 5 Pro - visual upgrade due to PSSR, and additional settings, AND framerate boost (unless game was locked 60 and no uncap 120hz option exists).
The 5 Pro unpatched game boost mode also seems to make a much bigger difference (on current gen games).
This just means Sony's argument and strategy was right
@Loamy the dog pro 🤣 love that!
I’d bet it’s just under what PS4 Pro sold at launch due to the high price and the fact that the improvements are generally much more subtle than the jump from 1080p to 4K that the PS4 Pro delivered.
@zupertramp Just a guess, but the people struggling to buy eggs probably aren't the same ones buying PS5 Pros.
Or, if they are, their priorities are wildly misaligned.
"From day one, the PS5 Pro has lacked the clear cut sales pitch that its mid-gen predecessor had." And yet its doing better sales wise than the ps4 pro did.
@Ralizah I know you know we're both kinda joking around but I will say with all seriousness, there's a difference between the people actually struggling to buy eggs and those just complaining about it. The latter would still buy a Pro. Or a new Crewmax pickup whilst simultaneously making out like gas prices are literally killing them.
So my comment was more directed at the overly dramatic folks in our great country very much acting like they have one foot in the bread line which is (part of) why we are where we are.
But that's really another conversation.
A small step for units sold, a big leap for console pricing, a giant black hole for our future wallets...

@Frmknst greed always pushes inflation the more people have the more they want
I think that launch always goes to the same people basically. The people who reliably buy the new thing every time no matter what. Launch is probably predictable. The longer term will be interesting. Especially in this economy. Gaming, and PlayStation in particular is in a really weird market now.
@Ravix I don't see that problem. Does it play Indiana Jones? Sea of thieves? Doom? Sounds like it's an Xbox just like it says it is.
@Loamy @DonJorginho ok ... you can do better than a .. 'well, you shouldn't complain about a USD700 (AUD1200) because it's not like anyone's putting a gun to your head, or putting you in lifetime indentured slavery / or the 'if you want to be a luddite and ignore the POWER of the Pro'... ' comment. I appreciate the 'sarcasm' but at the same time... this is also a sort of pre-emptive 'no one is forcing you to buy it' comment that suggests it's wrong to question the numbers, or the value.
Two things can be true at the same time. You can legitimately enjoy your PS5 Pro (and no one should take that away from you); but also, others may view it as not being worth it, or best thing for the industry (due to the fact that it's setting up a weird dynamic in the discussion). I think robust discussion is always good... and yes, no one should get too over-worked from comments online.
I'd just suggest sounding like you're doing a "PS5 Pro master-race vibe"... may not be helping a lot. I mean... I'm sure there must be sites that cater for the better class PS5 users... (and THAT is sarcasm... ).
@Northern_munkey we also didn't have the scalper culture for the PS4 Pro like we do today... I think everyone needs to take a chill pill before they start popping the self-congratulatory champagne, or the "I-told-you-soda-with-no-extra-sugar" comments. The market it definitely getting more complex... and I think part of the lack of transparency now from Sony, we may not know for years what actually happened. Edit: I - for one - have no idea what's actually happening in the market these days... and most of it doesn't really make a lot of commercial sense... most of it feels like ***** in the bed and thinking it's a hot-water-bottle (in terms of the long term sustainability of consoles). Edit^2: Thank you auto-filtering for saving me the effort of self-censoring my colourful analogy...
I skipped previous gen. Was PS4 Pro easy to find like PS5 Pro right now?
Well it does have over 2 times the storage as the original. Seemingly overlooked point in the pricing.
That being said, I have need need for it.
@Loamy I know it's meant to be a joke...
@sd7232 At launch it was super easy to find. Got hard to find a few months later and then nearly impossible in the following years.
@Ravix
You have fallen foul to an electrical
I’m an Xbox gang bang.
@Ravix
You think you have issues, my partner popped round today and told me she was an Xbox. 🤣
@OldGamer999 if they have eyes or ears capable of seeing or hearing a game, they are indeed an Xbox 😱
@sd7232 reasonably easy. I do think it sold out temporarily but as most of that was before the current wars and pandemic there were never really any supply chain worries. And it probably sold out a bit easier because it wasn't overpriced for max profit at the time
