The massively promising urban open world game Project Mugen has been renamed Ananta, and it’ll receive a new trailer on 4th December. The game was originally announced for PS5 and PS4, but now only references Sony’s current console on its website.
Those with long memories may recall this NetEase effort being announced last year, where it showcased Spider-Man style traversal and a wealth of different minigames and activities. We actually spoke to one of the developers at the Tokyo Game Show, and asked whether the release was real, as it simply looked too good to be true in it its first trailer. (He promised it was!)

A new promo video is scheduled to debut on 4th December, but for the time being there’s a short clip designed to promote the new name above. We’ll obviously be keeping a close eye on this one, as what’s been shown so far looks incredible.

Terrible name though it means "infinite" which is probably quite fitting!
Sammy Gacha's back 😀
@themightyant I didn't know that's what it meant. Good knowledge!
@get2sammyb Ananta is infinity (or Endless) in Sanskrit / Hindi (Indian languages). That’s also name of my son. 🙂
@get2sammyb I have a degree in JFGI (Just effing Google It)
A Sanskrit term (cultural appropriation much /jk) related to Vishnu and the celestial snake Shesha on which Vishnu reclines. Ananta is one of the four types of being. It has a beginning but no end and could be translated as "Infinite" or "Endless". It's represents similar concepts in Buddhism and Jainism.
It's also used in Yoga, which being a gamer I know little about 😉
EDIT: @vikramsingh Love it! I hope he plays this just so you can say Ananta stop playing Ananta.
@vikramsingh That's amazing!
@themightyant haha…would love to do that. But since he’s just 5, I guess I need to wait a bit.
@vikramsingh Well it is an "endless" game so might still be around in 10 years if things go according to plan.
And all this happening on NTE's closed beta 👀
What a week for attack of the clones 🤣
@themightyant dunno about all that but "Ananta" quite literally means "without an end". "Ant" or how english speakers call it "Anta" literally means end while the "An" here is simply used to denote lack of what follows it kinda like in "unimportant". So "without an end", "endless" or "infinite". It does annoys me how english speakers add the "a" at the end of words for no reason, it always sounds so silly.
Project Mugen was a much better name for it. Ananta isn't catchy enough or roll off the tongue easy.
@themightyant I think I like their name better and Goodluck finding a game with such a generic name online.
@Bingoboyop 'an-' or 'a-' is of course a very common Indo-European prefix from Ancient Greek with this meaning of absence (e.g. anarchy, apolitical, atheist), it's actually amazing how much Sanskrit exists in our language today.
