SEGA will delist a laundry list of classic Mega Drive and Dreamcast games from various storefronts from 6th December, prompting many fans to ponder how the publisher plans to replace them.
While PlayStation is the least affected format due to its lack of backwards compatibility with the PS3, it will lose the SEGA Mega Drive Classics compilation from the PS Store. If you already own the game, then it’ll remain in your library.
On PC and Xbox, tons of games will be removed, including the likes of SEGA Bass Fishing, Crazy Taxi, and NiGHTS into Dreams. It all begs the question: what has the publisher got cooking?
Usually, when retro games like this get removed from sale, it means either a license is expiring or a new compilation is coming. Considering SEGA is planning new versions of classics like Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Virtua Fighter, we’re expecting it to make the originals available in some form.
We wouldn’t be surprised if it created its own version of something like Capcom Arcade Stadium, a wrapper for all of its retro releases. It’d be really nice to see it a bit more proactive porting games from the SEGA Saturn and Dreamcast eras, alongside its Master System and Mega Drive classics.
Obviously, we don’t like to see games delisted like this, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t excited by what’s to come. Game preservation is a big deal these days, and many publishers are finding success re-releasing and repurposing their old classics in a contemporary form. Let’s hope SEGA has a really great compilation on the way.

As a big SEGA fan I already have most of those (there's some I don't care about).
So it doesn't affect me, but still sucks.
I think trademark of some titles probably expired and since you can't remove the titles individually you need to take down the entire compilation.
I think it will be a subscription service of some sort, so they can get a constant cash flow like every other entertainment company these days, probably like the EA one on PlayStation but it will also be available on other platforms like NSO.
It's a sign, they're pulling the collection because they're about to announce a remake of the entire Shining Force series. Finally!
*inhales large amounts of hopeium
@Dr-M Please no. I don't mind them selling them a la carte if they have Trophies and stuff, but please not behind a sub lol.
@Dr-M @get2sammyb If it’s behind I sub, they can keep ‘em to themselves… unless Jet Grind Radio is there. Then I’m there day 1! Lol.
Seaman remake it is!
Would love it if all the arcade games from Yakuza series (and more) got wrapped up in a SEGA history package.
I hope so as it doesn't make much sense otherwise, not that it was the best Mega Drive collection (especially on Switch) but also those games delisted from Xbox.
As mentioned above, RGG have already done a lot of the work for Sega's arcade games, so packaging them together would be nice, even better if they could match he Atari 50th presentation.
Even for someone like me who still has their Dreamcast sat right next to the PS5 Pro, I'd be all over new Sega compilations on modern hardware
A model 3 collection would be nice but doubtful.
I thankfully already have the Genesis Collection physically so at least I can still play them for right now hoe they are, but I would have to assume Sega is going to be trying to make a new thing for these games obviously since Sega obviously owns all of these games, so hopefully we can get a fully big boy collection that has almost anything a a Sega fan could want for like $60. Either that or Sega is just wanting to divert us away from old games to just play remakes which is kinda scummy there (probably for Jet Set most likely), but it is what they're doing for that game.
Crazy taxi and jet set radio are getting new games that's why. And the others, sega did say their bringing more old games back
Sega Mega Mega Collection version 296 coming soon
Cmon give me Cadillacs and Dinosaurs also!!! (I know it's Capcom...)
So are the PS3 ports of those games being delisted or not? I assume so but the article is alittle confusing on that point.
A Saturn and Dreamcast compilation would be amazing
the SEGA Mega Drive Classics collection is in the new sale for £5
@LuXifer I would also like to see the likes of the shining force 3 get a rerelease but sadly the rights are split between sega and camelot and I am not sure what their relationship is like now. Camelot are now a nintendo second party and they fell out during the making of shining force 3 quite badly.
@BlaizeV I can't remember if the PS3 collection even got a digital release, I can't seem to find any info on it, I'm not even sure if it's currently there to be delisted. I guess the only way to check for sure is through a PS3, mines not at hand at the moment though unfortunately.
I do know the disc version is still (currently at least) fairly cheap to get hold of.
@Fallingshadow Yeah, I read something about that. Such a shame. Luckily the rom-translators are picking up the slack so part 2 and 3 of Shining Force III are playable in english. But still, an official release with some QoL fixes would be preferable.
Really wish they would put the Sega Genesis Collection on sale one more time before it's delisted.
Saturn and dreamcast mini?!
@BlaizeV I believe what they are saying is if PS4 and PS5 are getting a renewed compilation then PS3 won't be able to due to backwards compatibility issues. They will likely make a PS4 compilation so it can be played on both systems but PS3 doesn't play on either which is why it will lose out.
@Dr-M I believe Sega stated any subscription games would be available through PS, Game Pass, Nintendo and Steam with some newer titles being collaborative with Nintendo. Due to Sega's marketing history with subscriptions in the 90's and other attempts to expand beyond Software they are a more collaborative company than first party these days.
@SoNico89 @Balosi
I was mainly talking about the individual releases for the dreamcast games on PS3 as well as I guess the mega drive releases too. These are being delisted on Steam and Xbox but supposedly not PS3 which is weird but I wonder if it maybe just something Sega didn't feel the need to mention.
The PS3 collection of mega drive games never got a digital release I believe.
