Remember In the Valley of Gods? The promising follow-up was being developed at Firewatch studio Campo Santo before it was acquired by Steam's parent company, Valve, in 2018. In 2019, the developer was put to work on Half-Life: Alyx instead. Its promising narrative adventure game was indefinitely delayed, seemingly sealed away in a digital tomb for all time.
Until today, that is. On X, user Gabe Follower shared some of Valve dev Matthew Wilde's work, whose field of expertise happens to be water shaders. Wilde showed off some of the impressive water tech being developed for In the Valley of Gods before Camp Santo was shuttered. Considering that would make it some five years old, it's impressive stuff!
Do you think we might see In the Valley of Gods someday, or has that ship sailed? Were you a fan of Campo Santo and Firewatch? Let us know in the comments section below.

I wish we got this game, a brilliant studio gobbled up. Though I believe the staff were quite happy working on Half Life Alex so I'm happy for them all the same
@SeanOhOgain Completely agree. Was about to write almost exactly the same word for word. As a gamer it just feels like we lost some unique games in the process of them getting bought by Valve. Same when other teams get gobbled up. This was one of my most anticipated titles. But can't blame anyone, Valve is many's dream job.
Half Life Alyx, I demoed at some point. It was the last VR game I played. After about 30 minutes, I got nauseous, threw up, and decided I wouldn’t try VR again, given that I got sick every time I’d use it for every game I’d tried over the course of a few years. If Valve couldn’t do it… you know? Not that it’s a bad game, but man would I have rather had In the Valley of Gods. I loved Firewatch.

I know that you mean, but graphical limitations are often budgetary rather than technical. There are games on the PS3 that still blow a lot of recent games out of the water.
Not a big deal personally, Alyx is the greatest game I've ever played and it really feels like they put their all into it. When this releases in 2029 I don't doubt it'll be amazing too.
I'm still a bit heartbroken that this had to die so that Alyx could live.
Game is dead. We wont ever see this one again.
Real shame. I have played Firewatch at least four times and I had the theme on my ps4 since the game released. Was really looking forward to Campo Santo’s next game. It was probably “better” for the devs and founders to be bought out but I can’t help but feel we lost out on a truly unique studio when it happened.
