Sonic has enjoyed plenty of highs, but he’s also experienced some extreme lows. Chief among those was the PS3 game Sonic the Hedgehog, known colloquially by fans as Sonic 06. It was a disaster, earning a Metacritic rating of 43.
But Sonic X Shadow Generations producer Shun Nakamura, speaking at a fan event in Indonesia, admitted he wants to remake the game. While he didn’t share anything specific, and fans should keep in mind there’s no confirmation of the project being in production, he said he “personally wishes for the opportunity” to revisit the release.
Given how poorly received the original game was, this would need to be a total remake; a simple remaster would not suffice for a project this poorly received. Personally, we don’t really see the appeal of a remake of this – surely it’d be better to just make something new? – but we appreciate Sonic 06 marks an important moment in the storied series’ history, so perhaps there would be value in “putting things right” when it comes to this title.
Would you buy a Sonic 06 remake? (569 votes)
- Yes, that game deserves a second chance
- Meh, I'd potentially consider it
- No, let that game remain in the past please
- I honestly don't know

Honestly if a remake changes what people complain about 06 then it’ll be great.
Hoping they change Silver’s it’s no use lock though
I'd honestly love to see that
Not sure though if it is a good idea to remake a game with a negative reputation
Yes I would look the story is crap there's no salvaging that but I always enjoyed the actual stages and level design in 06 particularly in Sonic's campaign. The fan made Project 06 has more than proven that there was a good game buried under the surface the whole time
If there is enough demand for it then it may come and to what catch.
Not gonna lie. I enjoy the PS3 version. It's one of my guilty pleasures.
Gamers: Stop making remakes, there's too many.
Also gamers: 74% (currently) would buy or consider buying a remake
Sonic 06 is one of those games that everyone hates but seemingly no one has actually played. I enjoyed it, simple as that.
And a note on that scene where Elise kisses Sonic, let's get real about this: what was shocking in 2006 is small potatoes in 2024. That is not even on my radar anymore. Give me thirty seconds and I'll find you an anime much worse than "just" a girl kissing a hedgehog.
The Internet is already remaking it, and the reception has been astronomical. I kinda think the game's incompetence IS it's appeal, personally.
I say remake it and bundle it with Adventure and 2 remasters (since '06 is basically Adventure 3). Or remake Shadow the Hedgehog — still bundle the Adventure games. Or, just remaster the Adventure games; don't think I didn't notice those delistings and your yearly Sonic release schedule SEGA. Adventure remaster bundle for 2025.
@themightyant Ain't that the truth. Though I'd say I'm in the 'stop remaking everything, just re-release or remaster instead' camp.
@LifeGirl yeah - yoshi is a male dinosaur laying eggs and nobody thinks too hard about it. Also what would happen if Ranma got pregnant? There you go
He wants to remake Sonic Boom?
Jokes aside I do feel that Sonic 06 has a good fundamental premise but countless technical and control issues ruin the game.
This rebuilt in the current Hedgehog engine and some more thought put into its open areas, could be a very good game
Do it. The original was terrible but had potential. The fan remake showed that.
Whatever was wrong with the game could be improved upon in the remake. I never played the game and not a fan of sonic. If the story is good, then it I believe it deserves a second chance.
Give me Sonic Adentures 1 & 2 remaster then I could die a happy man
The story is kind of a massive mess that can't really be saved, but the gameplay can be fixed though.
I watched this on Retsupurae back in the day. I usually love 7th Gen insanity, but this was a whole new level
@MeanBeanEgg Do many games that are only 3 years old get remakes? I'm not so sure.
As it's not possible to preserve everything i'd rather Sega remade something better rather than this game which Eurogamer scored a woeful 2/10, EDGE a 3/10 and even hard to offend IGN gave it 4.8. It sits on a lowly 46 on Metacritic. With all of Sega's history this shouldn't make the cut.
I mean, if any Sonic game legitimately needs a remake, it's Sonic '06.
The game has good ideas so yeah do it.
Sonic 06 is not the worst Sonic game in the franchise, there are way worse games.
And I would love a Remake, which can fix a lot of things.
The ps3 version didn't have trophies and the x360 had terrible in game loading times. But a remaster might be a good idea.
I played it not too long ago, and yeah it’s glitchy as hell and very frustrating at times, but I did have a lot of fun. Finished Sonic’s story and I think about half of Shadow’s.
If they do it well like they seem to have with generations id consider it.
Maybe also if they remove sonic kissing a human girl too
SEGA would be best just working with the developer behind Project P06 to give their game some polish and release it as an official remake.
Most people's reaction to this:
@Keyblade-Dan Does anyone read the stories in Sonic 🤣
Call it Sonic Redemption.
@Meowmixes98 No, call it Sonic Adventure 3
Bad games that had solid ideas are the most deserving of remakes that can fix what didn't work, same with movies.
Like Spyro Enter The Dragonfly it's either you like the glitches, still appreciate what's there or first impressions are stuck with you and you hate it.
I've picked up a few of the older ones out of curiosity of not really a Sonic fan (not yet) but I'm still curious.
I think any game with trouble can be done with a second chance, just if they put the effort in, have the right people, can work with the hardware or management and so on. A lot of factors happen after all. Just getting it to work out this time.
Each game made always has some details worth salvaging if they 'don't' make it to the next game but other times they do so unless the mechanics, level design, story or whatever are worth salvaging/remaking then yeah not a lot is missed out on really to justify it other than something else to put on the shelf because everything else has (or unless a few gens later they do) or others are taking time.
But there are likely other entries they could do more with as well then 06 regardless of it's ideas, age, etc. The Advance/Rush game, Adventure 1 & 2, any others. I mean I doubt they will Chronicles and try a different angle with it.
Either way they have a lot they could work with to fill in gaps besides the next 2D/next big 3D one.
Makes sense. Sonic fans and Sega pretended that Colours and Generations were worth a rerelease, so why not?
@themightyant I think you're missing the point.
Remaking a great late PS3 game like the Last of Us for the PS5 felt wholly unnecessary. It already looked great and played well.
Remaking a flawed mediocre looking game with rushed development and a lot of wasted potential makes sense.
People are tired of remakes of new and great games, remaking a flawed game and fixing it is a great idea
Absolutely, this game was pretty good, it just needed more time. But in many ways, it was like a Sonic Adventure 3.
Sonic Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog deserve a remake much more than Sonic 06. There's too much baggage with 06, and a realized remake would be endlessly compared to the fan-made project 06.
Sonic Heroes would benefit from tweaking the stages of each team to be more unique, and rebalancing the objectives for Team Chaotix to not be incredibly annoying.
Shadow the Hedgehog being reworked to be less "Choose your own adventure" and instead more of a linear game with different neutral, hero, and evil story lines (like Hero and Dark from SA2) would be a legitimately good game.
@LikelySatan idk about colors didn’t play it but generations was def worth remaking/releasing especially with the new shadow content which was some of the best sonic content in freaking years and worth the price of admission
They should honestly just get ChaosX (Project '06 creator) on board. I don't trust Sonic Team to handle a Sonic '06 remake internally all by themselves.
They had the ambition but a lack time and polish due to lack of time. Give them plenty of time and it'll be very well done I believe.
@dark_knightmare2 I'm truly happy people enjoyed it, but "the best Sonic content in years" is a low bar, and always will be.
@Pat_trick On TLOU Pt1 I agree, but that is the exception not the rule, VERY few games fall into that category, it's a rare outlier.
As for this game... can't polish a turd. It wasn't mediocre it was objectively poor in a lot of ways. With all of Sega's release history THIS is the game he wats to remake? At that point just make a new better Sonic game than waste time and dev cost on this.
@themightyant That's a fair assessment too.
I think Sonic 06 had potential, and fan remakes show that.
But it's definitely better to let bygones be bygones and make a new and better game.
Wasn't this game released on Xbox 360, so wouldn't this remake also be for the Series consoles, I'd definitely play a remake to 06, along with Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog as definitely wanna see those in today's engine, maybe remake/remaster Adventure 1 and 2 as well as that'll be fun
