The Callisto Protocol, still a frontrunner for best PS5 graphics, will look better than ever thanks to a surprise PS5 Pro patch, which ups the game’s resolution to 8K.
You’ll have two ways to escape the Black Iron Prison on Sony’s supercharged system: 8K at 30fps or 4K at 60fps. Both options feature full ray tracing.

In the case of the 8K option, the game’s being upscaled from 6K, but depending on the solution the developer’s using, that could look incredible for all 12 people who own a compatible display.
In other news, dev Striking Distance Studios is also updating its isometric roguelike Redacted for the PS5 Pro. That game will run in supersampled 4K at 120fps or in 8K at 60fps on Sony’s new system.

I think this game was very underrated. I preferred it to the Dead Space remake and actually thought the melee combat was really good and satisfying. Just tried the pro update and graphically it’s still one of the best looking games this gen.
12 people? Thought Samsung's could do 8k? OLED is out of the question. But brilliant if you have a Samsung 8k!
I love that my base console’s box has a big 8K logo on it despite I think The Touryst being the only 8K game on the entire console.
Nightmare timeline where meaningful PS5 Pro patches are exclusive to ***** games.
@Kiefer-Sutherland No joke, I am literally watching 24 right now, so your username got quite the laugh out of me lol.
Got the game on Plus but never started it so i guess this is the perfect time to start it.
@nessisonett Don't worry because you don't own a 8K TV like 99.99% of people on the planet so it makes no difference to you.
@Kiefer-Sutherland If it wasn't so disappointing in its combat and didn't have so many vents to crawl through I might have enjoyed it.
Get back to me when the 16k 15fps patch drops.
I enjoyed this for what it was and it really is one hell of a good looking game. Will pop this on download to check it out on the pro.
People are talking like 8K TVs are expensive. They're under £1000. My OLED was that expensive. (Still think 8K is pointless though)
@ShogunRok I'm shocked with how much of a loss it was to the company they even bothered with it 😅
Decent game that I enjoyed enough to Platinum. It already looked amazing on Series X and base PS5. Unfortunately, Dead Space and RE 4 Remakes came out a few months later and completely overshadowed Callisto. But that's besides the point. I am looking forward to checking out the update when I pick up a PS5 Pro soon.
The Callisto Protocol might be the most broken game you can play from the disk without updating. I have the PS4 disk and the game, after the end of chapter one, plays literally like a slow motion replay from a football game. I was not a big fan of the battle system but I enjoyed the story up to the ending that was hilariously bad.

Great, now Sony are making us guess what games are getting updated.
Game is still gonna suck no matter what resolution you put it on
Its a strange, strange world when (from what has been reported here) the devs behind this game have put out a decent Pro enhancement, but the devs behind much bigger selling games like Silent Hill & SW Jedi Survivor could not.
8k televisions now? I don’t even have a 4k. Hell, my brother still loves his 30 year old CRT TV. Do we really need that much resolution?
@Bigmanfan plot twist! It’s really him and he’s laughing now because you don’t know it’s him lol.
8k in video games is the equivalent of wiping your arse with gold leaf paper - yes it can be done, but it’s largely impractical and an expensive waste of resources.
Stoked! Been putting this one off. Now seems like a good time to jump in. I just got my Pro but I’m waiting on the disc drive to arrive. Callisto Protocol has just been sitting in my digital library since it was given away as part of PS+. I was dissuaded from playing it when it got lackluster reviews at release. But I have a feeling it got unjustly bagged on. Can’t wait to fire it up to see how good it looks with the Pro.
Thats highly impressive. Im a Playstation 5 Pro owner and I have [Redacted] on my Wishlist but with these news, its an Instant cop.
@Rich33 if a game sells well regardless of quality then there isn’t really the incentive to improve it. However, an underperforming game can benefit from additional work put into it, even if it was already quality to begin with. It sucks, but thats how incentive works.
@DennisReynolds That’s not the point at all. Why advertise future-proofing if it’s utter sh*te? That’s like the PS2 having massive HD ready stickers all over it in 2000 even though it’s technically not a lie because Gran Turismo 4, Jackass the Game, Tourist Trophy and Valkyrie Profile 2 could output at 1080i.
@ShogunRok bruh
@ShogunRok you are an editor and put this comment out? I've seen lesser comments removed for being inappropriate before now.
@ShogunRok bad form,.others get removed for saying less,
"All 12 people" lol. Now that was funny.
@Rich33 Exactly. So if they can do that on the pro hardware what is the excuse for all others.
Just fired up Calisto Protocol for a look and good grief, it looks phenomenal!
I mean it looked great on the base PS5, but the 4k60 with Ray Tracing is gorgeous to behold.
Tried the 8k30 (down sampled to 4k on my set) and it's so insanely clean. Hard to pass up that 4k60 though.
This is how to do a Pro upgrade. Developers take note.
As an aside. The game is hugely under rated. I am now starting a fresh playthrough and bought the DLC to support the devs.
@kcarnes9051 it's highly under rated. Everyone was expecting something akin to Dead Space and subsequently were disappointed.
I actually enjoyed this more than the Dead Space Remake. It's not a perfect game by any stretch, but it's a solid 8/10 for me, if only for the incredible graphics and atmosphere.
Combat takes some getting used to, but once it clicks it's actually really meaty and satisfying.
I'd like to add that this game not only has jaw-dropping graphics, but also SOUND. So anybody with a good audio setup, or even better - good headphones, just crank that volume!!
@VRjunky this is great to hear and I was kind of thinking that the poor reception was based on misplaced expectations. I played Deadspace Remake over six months ago and loved it, but it’s been long enough now to where I don’t remember the controls so the muscle memory shouldn’t cloud my impressions of this game hopefully. Thanks for lending your impressions.
@ShogunRok this game was definitely not *****.
Blessed to know developers care for all the 12 people and are very inclusive of our small community 🙏🙏
@LavenderShroud people that actually live in 2024, yes.
@ShogunRok
I haven't tried it. Is it really that bad?
Might play the dlc to see how it looks. Did enjoy the plat
@shogunrok Not like you to be so unprofessional
One too many beers? We’ve all been there mate 🤣🤣
@BrettAwesome it isn't that bad at all, the reason He and half the world said it was bad was because they expected some dead space carbon copy which it wasn't.
It's.a great game has it scare moments and it's tense moments, and combat is alway up close and personal, I recommend you give it a shot l, you can probably pick up for a decent price in the next 2 weeks or so.
Take the reviews with a pinch here especially since I bet only 1 of the editors played the new patch and the rest still jerkin on release day build
@Sergo
Plenty have done excellent patches, a few have not. I think it comes down to 2 things.
Low effort. We now have people talking about old builds of PSSR being used and not updated as a cause. Clearly no QA was done on a few - or it was ignored. Maybe they didnt spend a little time getting to grips with it - though we have had a few 3P devs interviewed that have said how easy it is. In a sector where MS only have 30% of the customer base and mandate 2 versions - a decent Pro patch does not seem a big ask of more recent games.
Bad Choices. Using SWJS as an example - the devs slapped on RT again in a game in which it is barely seen - I really did not miss it when it was removed. After the patch that removed RT to fix performance, the remaining problem was Image Quality, and this / further performance is where the extra GPU should have gone. How did they not see the games biggest remaining issue on console, and sacrificed all to the false god of RT again. (See also QA).
That's fair play each to their own, I think Stellar Blade and Astro Bot are dog sh*t, lol.
@kcarnes9051
You raise a very good point, but I would say dev reputation is more important. We know its a thing when games sell well due to past glories (despite red flags), and maybe only 10-20% of customers care about bad reputation, but given the sales numbers needed to break even - 10-20% can mean the difference between success and failure.
Conversly, an outstanding patch would generate interest, and may go some way to redeeming some reputation.
As Dani Filth once said... "you can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter."
@Rich33 Yes, this is probably right, but the gamers that buy the product do not need to get in those details. They see couple performing great and the others thay are bad use excuses which are ... a joke. A low effort and bad choices are actually worse. Means that they did not care much.
My hopes remain at the new games that are developed since i could not care less of old games with new visuals. Lets hope that they have in mind the new tech when they build those. However, we know the reality and things will not change much.
P.S. this really actually hurts them since it is proven without any doubt (except Astrobot) that you should never buy day one. Buy later when the patches fix the game and 99% chance is that you will get it cheaper. So, you buy cheap and get better experience than the expensive day one purchases. I would be embaressed.
It’s looking like investing in an 8K tv for PS6 is a good move even if games would only running at 30fps, that could increase to 40fps with VRR. If MicroLED still isn’t widely available in stores by then I can see myself getting an 8K tv if I ever need to replace the one I have now.
@nessisonett It may only be one game but no one can accuse Sony of fault advertisement 😉
Callisto was a good game, a very enjoyable game and it was a shame it got dumped on the way it did. Yeah there were a few annoying caveats but it ran well and it also looked good, REALLY good.
This patch is just pure yawn, doing something because you can and not because it's needed.
Really don't know where this over obsession with super visuals has come from, highlighted by evidence of people now wanting to 'give it a go' because you can s33 stu7fz in 8kayz. 🤦♂️
@torquex you best get yourself a riot shield after that comment haha🤣🤣
@t0nyth3t3rrific if it gets more people playing the game, then the update wasn’t a waste. Even if people already bought it they still might recommend it to friends after finally playing it.
@Uromastryx I guess if you are an editor you are beyond reproach..
@Northern_munkey well lack of response or anything says enough man
Lucky I own both and thanks to my backlog haven't started them yet. Definitely be playing on my PS5 PRO I've already downloaded games with a PS5 PRO patch.
@Uromastryx double standards.
I see that since the vocal PS5 Pro detractors can't use the "PS5 Pro can't run games at 4K60 with ray tracing" argument this time, they deftly and swiftly switched to "no one has 8K display to play this on anyway" or "we need 16K upscaling."
Moving the goalposts is indeed popular on Push Square.
@Kiefer-Sutherland True, i hear what your saying. I wish more people would play it that haven't already, it's superb.
However, its using asthetics as its singular point of existence. Not good practice in my book especially when it just didn't need it.
There is WAY too much emphasis on visual quality now and it's worrying.
I just hope they get an 8k / ray tracing / 120fps patch out for Vampire Survivors. That’d be sweeeeet. Seriously, though, it was almost the first game I played on the Pro
@Blofse I believe if you have the money LG do a 8k oled tv the Z3 I believe.
Reality is it isn't the time for 8k.
The real sad thing though is the jump from 1080 to 4k wasn't that big compared to the actual jump to 8k.
It's a shame that it's that much more expensive.
@Uromastryx lol.
Looks good, tried it and it runs smooth at 4k/60. Well done. I know its probably my setup but in this game, plus many other game but the blacks are not black but grey. Is that because I don't have OLED? Using the Sony X90H. Running in game mode, or is that just because I did not set the HDR right?
@SoulChimera underrated comment
Very nice. Loved every minute of this game.
@ShogunRok That's a big reason why I am fine with skipping a PS5 Pro. What good is the most powerful console if there's no games I want that really take advantage of it?
