Sony and Polyphony Digital have announced that My First Gran Turismo, which is essentially a PS5, PS4 demo for Gran Turismo 7, will launch this Friday, 6th December 2024. It's available for free, and lets you try race events, time trials, Music Rally stages, and license tests from the full game. You can get a visual sample of the content in the trailer above.
From the main menu, you'll be able to try three race events: the Sunday Cup, Clubman Cup, and the GT Cup. You can set lap times in time trials on the Kyoto Driving Park, Deep Forest Raceway, and Trial Mountain. Within the app, you can also work towards achievements and a car collection of up to 18 vehicles. As well as flat-screen support, the whole demo can also be played using PSVR2.
In a post to the PlayStation Blog, president Kazunori Yamauchi said: "This experience holds a special place in my heart, as it pays tribute to the origins of the first Gran Turismo, where players of all generations discovered the joys of driving. Whether it’s introducing kids to the joy of racing for the first time or reigniting a forgotten passion for driving, My First Gran Turismo was designed to be both approachable and immersive, created for everyone, with no limits on age or driving skill level."
My First Gran Turismo goes live at midnight on 6th December 2024 in your local timezone. It's not clear whether you're progress carries over to the full game if you decide to buy it after the fact, which we awarded a 9/10 rating in our Gran Turismo 7 PS5 review back at launch. The demo seems to be more of its own, standalone thing rather than something that could tie directly into the full game.
"Gran Turismo 7 is a game for everyone: the racing enthusiasts, the novices, and anyone in between," we concluded. "It celebrates car culture and history within the confines of a driving experience, explaining how the automobiles you race past the chequered flag fit into the wider world. There's never been a game quite like it before: Gran Turismo 7 means more than just racing. It's something that matters; something that warrants appreciation and respect just as much as it hands it out itself."

Any trophies? So it's simplified controls?
'My First Gran Turismo' sounds like the name for a preschool spin-off.
@HotGoomba Wonder if the cafe will do kids meals 😃
Just got a PSVR2 and wanted to try Gran Turismo and wasn't willing to pay full price just for a taste so this is perfect. The way things are going so far I'll likely buy it after 5 minutes but I still need to be sure.
I like driving games, but the sheer size of games like GT7 puts me off! A handful of races and time trials may scratch the itch for me...
Is this always online?
"Cars obtained by completing 'My First Gran Turismo' can be unlocked in 'Gran Turismo 7' if the same account for PlayStation™Network is used with both games."
And it's 15 GB on PS5
"My first Gran Turismo" is a terrible name. As noted already, it makes it sound like a game for babies. I wonder what normies who do not follow the press releases will think of it.
@LifeGirl @HotGoomba it sounds like a Gran Turismo playset manufactured by Fisher Price.
@Jrs1 🤣🤣
The games title was right infront of you, surely it had to be
Gran Turismo: Test Drive
I'm actually looking forward to this since I'm curious how well GT7 controls and uses the dual sense. That name is so patronizing though 😆
That's my Weekend sorted still life in the olde PS4....expecting an update on The Long Dark anytime soon too.
I was waiting for this - not a huge racing sim enthusiast but I wanted to check out the VR mode everyone's been raving about.
Will also check out the flat modes on PS5 Pro
Is it kneecapped by the same stupid ‘always online’ requirement forced into GT7?
@Alps_Stranger yeah I'm in the same position, been waiting for this to see how good the vr actually is.
Also, this would be a good time to release Gran Turismo 7 on PC, Sony. Hint... Hint... 👀
@Balaam_ they wouldn't would they?
The full game is too big for my appetite for this kind of racing game but this slice should serve me just right!
I miss SEGA’s racing games
@Alps_Stranger
GT7 is the best game for VR2, especially if you play it with a steering wheel and pedals, and I usually play Assetto Corsa-type simulators and not arcades, it feels more real with VR2.
I've gotten close to buying GT7 on a few occasions, but always convince myself not to due to its always-online nature. It's less about having to be online to play and more about if it'll become a shell of a game once the servers go down.
Shouldn't this have been launched prior to GT7, like the prologue games? It's essentially a prologue game with a different name.
Good idea to try and get a little more 'funding' for the team by potentially poaching new customers with this demo.
I was a little worries by the fact that other car games constantly squeeze out new iterations whereas Polyphony seems to keep afloat supporting the very good GT7
Very annoying (with the main game) that I can't delete my progress and start the game again from scratch.
I played it alot when I first got it but then haven't touched it for a few years, i attempted to play it again recently but it was hard to get upto speed and remember where I was up to so ideally just wanted to start again from the beginning.
So frustrating that it's impossible to do this
I am not really interested in trying this now as I am buying the full game while it's on sale for £34.99 half price. I am glad I didn't buy it launch because it takes advantage of my PS5 Pro and a lot more has been added to the game. They should have done this sooner in my opinion. Also the always online doesn't put me off, if it was another publishers and developers I probably wouldn't buy it. When Polyphony makes GT8 I trust Sony and Polyphony to patch GT7 with the ability to play offline apart from multiplayer, like they've done before.
@Member_the_game i felt the same. Would have been nice to wipe and replay from scratch in VR. Its a rediculous idea to not allow you wipe your campaign data.
I'll take it. Probably buy it because the discversion is 30 euro's at the moment.
I've been sim racing for over decade now, and I don't think I've ever hooked my sim rig up to my PS4. I think this will be just the thing that gets me to do just that.
@Kidfunkadelic83
Absolutely crazy decision to make it like that... I don't recall ever having the same issue with any other games.
@Kidfunkadelic83
I believe there is some sort of loop hole where you can create another PSN account with a different email address but honestly, I just don't have time for all that.
It's inexcusable that I can't just delete my progress from both my console and the cloud and simply start again
@Member_the_game its ridiculous given that the option to do that has been around for almost 2 decades. The worst is when its a story game or something and I reboot it after a year or so and wanna start again to understand that story or controls. Nope you have to pick up where you left off and be confused for hours. No thanks.
Then enjoy "Your First Gran Tourismo"
@HotGoomba Sounds like a GT themed Kart racer to me.
Loved Gran Turismo, Loved Gran Turismo 2 even more and then fell out of love with it when I played 3 and that was that. 3 had no sense of speed at all but those first 2 games, brilliant. Do the new ones still have the ridiculous license tests and mad 99 laps endurance races? I remember being on one of those for 3 hours straight haha.
Get you addicted To The Grind and hopefully you'll spend all your money on micro transactions
@LifeGirl @Markatron84 have mentioned this before but there is a legacy of Sony using this naming convention - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_First_Sony
@Alps_Stranger Dude... you're in for a treat! Now, I must say that a decent racing rig is essential for the true driving experience. It's not cheap and takes a lot of space, but if you have any interest in cars, it's totally worth it.
I'm glad that more people will get to enjoy what I think is the very best gaming experience on the PS5. Sure, it's not for everyone but, for those on the fence, this is a great opportunity.
@Alps_Stranger Happy for ya
@Stale-Bread didn't the very first game have 24hour endurance races? I have vague memories of something like that
@HotGoomba GT for Boys (was cancelled and I think turned into GT PSP, either way the GT4/GT5 era was different times.
Also they knew boys played the games anyway so that project didn't make too much sense even besides GT Mobile being also what GT PSP became) was also a weird title but even still not the best names out there.
A fair demo, I might take a look out of curiosity. I don't like GT7 but I"m always interested, from manufacturer demos of GT3, 2002 Concept and GT4 to other things why not.
That and footage/info for the GT Fandom Wiki, why not I did GT PSP driving missions as no one finished those off of B or C to Q, manufacturer demos for GT3, 2002 Concept and GT4 and GT Sport server shut down info differences of the livery editor, sportsmanship videos, access of brand central before and after 1.68 with 1.69 among other things so might as well here.
@Stale-Bread yeah it has some insane length races, but you can pit in and save and come back later, no need for the 4hour plus sessions 🤣
Edit - as usual - I got too excited with my thought-train...BLUF: I think Sony don't understand why young people aren't into their games... hint... it's not access.
So I grew up on GT on PS1... ok you caught me... I was already grown up by then. But I loved the game. I admit I fell off after the second, but tried to jump back in years later with GT Sports (after too many years). I just kinda bounced off it, because it wasn't the experience I remember of just jumping into driving... instead it was a sort of cult-like experience. TBH GT7 is even more so... it's not about the kid wanting to join in the fun of good racing games. Even the marketing blurb about how "it's more than just... "... kids don't share the same connection to cars... and if this is made for adults - then do better. This is the sort of fandom-focus that actually made me drop off. So who is this aimed at?
So I should be fully on board with this initiative...shouldn't I? And, yes, it could be good. However... the cynic in me sees this as just anotherloot-box-hook... F2P for mainline games. What next... God-Mildly-Distured-at-Violoence? Feeling-Anxious-Among-the-Many-of-Us? Somewhat-Sickly-in-Tsushima? Just enough of a taste to get you through the door... to part cash. Then don't pay-wall demos behind a Premium subscription
I get Sony needs to try something - but if the game is appreciably different to the 'trial experience', then this is kinda misleading and sort of aggressive marketting. Kids aren't playing consoles anymore. They stopped being fun, or affordable, new or even talked about... so now even supposedly top-shelf experiences need to give themselves away. Games have aged with the people that developed them 30 years ago... they don't speak to young kids anymore.
I'm not having a go at anyone's love of the GT franchise - I'm just saying, this is trying to solve the wrong problem. It's not access, it's the fundamental premise. Kid's aren't lacking opportunity - they're just not that interested in cars these days - other than getting from A to B (whether it's the uber or the parent-uber). Consoles have next to zero identity cache in teenagers/young-adults psyche. In the same way as most kids don't get nostalgic for franchises that they didn't live through.
I kinda shepherded my son through TLOU - and he rates it - but he wouldn't have if it wasn't for me. That's not sustainable.
The focus is wrong - make games that people want to invest their time in (in front of the TV). He can't even finish GoWR because it's not that interesting (after loving 2018). My daughter suddenly jumped from Zelda TotK to RDR2... because it's a really good game. I definitely didn't encourage her. She found it herself. Not beause it was free. It sparked her interest. She won't touch Horizon becuase it's boring to her... even though for her she can play ALL of them for free. I think companies are so focused on marketing - they've forgotten how to connect with gamers.
I just think Sony is trying to turn everything into an ad. Edit - I grew up in the age of the demo disc... that isn't today. They have been following the GP model with their PS+ subscription where EVERYTHING is expected to be free. Access is NOT a problem. Why can't these companies see - parent's worry about the value of things... kids just want to have fun experiences - mostly likely with friends.
And apologies for my evening (my time) rant.
I sincerely hope that this game is just license tests and tutorials.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Somewhat Sticky in Tsushima is really hard to find un-pixelated.
@LikelySatan haha... well if you're sickly enough, I guess it goes without saying.
Sony's next big release: a demo of a game that's already released! Awesome. No wonder I play Dreamcast games on my phone, at least their new to me
Another LIVE-SERVICE game
😬😬😬
@Bluemoon2008 Seeing as there's a whole series of games (including one that recently got bad reviews/sales) of games called "Test Drive" already, nah.
@Major_Player Funny how your Xbox-loving ass is fine with Forza Horizon being live service, but have to flame this (despite the fact it's a free demo and not actually a game).
😬😬😬
@MrPeanutbutterz : Forza Horizon a live service game???
Obviously you haven't even try it....😂😂😂
Please do and then change your comment.
@Major_Player Yeah I bought a Series X to play FH4 and 5. So the online drivitars and playlist [italics]aren't[/italics] live service, while a demo for GT7 is?
Cool story, bro.
@MrPeanutbutterz You truly don't know what a live service game is then...😂😂😂
@Major_Player Okay then, genius, explain to my ignorant self... And also explain how FH doesn't fit that criteria.
And also explain how a ******ing demo fits your definition of a live service game.
