Since the PS5 Pro came out, we've somehow spent even more time gaming, checking out how the additional horsepower has improved past games and the new features it allows. Sony also wants to remind you of how awesome its pricey new upgrade is, releasing a trailer showing off 2022's Horizon Forbidden West enhanced on the PS5 Pro. Never mind that the associated patch has been out for some time now.
Still, Sony is clearly proud of Guerrilla Games' technical achievements, and Forbidden West is arguably the PS5 Pro showpiece to beat (the jump from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on base PS5 to Pro is truly transformative). We did boot it up recently to see for ourselves, and were reminded that we never did get around to expansion Burning Shores; likely Sony's intent all along.
Is Horizon Forbidden West the current pinnacle of technical wizardry on PS5 Pro? Does any other game on the platform look and run better? Let us know in the comments section below.

Its currently the best looking game on console on the Pro, nothing else comes close.
Why is there another article about this? I know that news is slowing down, but geez.
It is stunning on any console or PC you can play it on, but that doesn’t change the fact that it feels more like a flashy exhibition of graphics than a fun game.
I say this as someone who has beaten the game on PS5 close to release
@MasterChiefWiggum just wait until they start praising the Demon’s Souls remake or any available PS1 game on store, for how advanced they look or run on the Pr0
yes forbidden west looks great but Horizon zero dawn is a better game
My doctor prescribed Horizon to help me sleep.
The fidelity in Forbidden West is unparalleled, but the art direction in Alan Wake 2 is staggeringly gorgeous, and I still feel like TLOU2 is the most detailed and true to life rendering I've seen.
@MasterChiefWiggum If you read the article you would know why there's an article on it.
@MasterChiefWiggum if this was an article on horizon zero dawn I'd be inclined to agree with you but it's not..its about the 2nd game and pushsquare have not really covered this one too much or the expansion.
@zhoont art direction in a linear game is very different to art direction in an open world with a real time day-night cycle.
Yeah it looks great, but not gonna care about buying it because of how much of an ass they made Aloy in it.
Nice to know PS4 games look good on the Pro.
@zhoont The Last of Us Part I ver. 3 looks and runs incredibly on the Pro as well.
@Nepp67 Aloy is fine in it and very consistent with how she is in ZD.
Morning pro haters 😃
@TheKurgan Brutal, but true.
The graphics were never the issue with HFW, it was literally everything else. It was just so dull, making a game about fighting robot dinosaurs so boring takes real skill. Easily my biggest disappointment of this gen.
Reminder that i'm still not interested. 😅
This is how a PS5 Pro game should be.
From an amazing technical studio who know what they are doing.
And no PSSR but use their own tech upscaler.
The same will happen with other studios using their tech upscaler they will perform better.
When PS5 Pro gets the Indy game using ID tech and its own upscalers it will look amazing.
And DOOM game as well.
Being honest I don’t know why Sony invented PSSR, yes the Pro with more power but PSSR not sure.
The best tech normally is when studios and Sony do this, use their own built game engines and of course that includes their own upscaling tech.
Oh c'mon, cut the scripted BS crap already (Sony) !
All of the content shown in the video is either from older trailers (even the apparently "gameplay" ones), or from in-game cutscenes.
You want to show how the game looks on PS5 Pro?
Provide an actual gameplay video, not this carefully curated... shtuff.
I've finished the game 3 times already, twice on PS5 and once on PC.
It's an impressive graphical achievement indeed, hell I've saved a lot of landscape wallpapers from this game, it's that good looking.
But if you compare the actual game with what's shown in this video (and previously shown official trailers for that matter) it barely gets to 75-80% of the details shown in the official videos... you won't obtain the exact same level of quality during actual gameplay even on PC with everything cranked to max at 4k res and no DLSS/FSR... Get serious Sony and stop misleading ppl.
I'd say Horizon Forbidden West is the best looking game on Pro and one of the best looking games I've played anywhere, FFVII Rebirth isn't even in the top 5 best Pro games and only gets mentioned because of how awful it looks on a base PS5
In terms of games that use all the Pro features, F124 has to be up there with great RT, GT7 is amazing and with a huge boost to VR too and No Man's Sky is also an exceptional PS5 Pro implementation
Yeah well, it's still a boring game IMO. I'll wait for a actual new stunning game before dipping into the pro pool ...
@OldGamer999 Again most games perform and look better with PSSR. Even Alan Wake 2 now that we can compare it with a of a click of button looks better with PSSR on.
@Shinnok789 DF have outright said Horizon FW on Pro is on par with the PC version at max settings and that at times its upscaler does a better job then DLSS. In fact Sony's compressed trailer does not even do it justice.
@DennisReynolds
Not saying PSSR does not help sometimes.
Just that studios that use their own in house developed game engines and with built in upscalers, especially a in house studio and normally Sonys get the best results.
Sony studios always have done hence the massive Sony in house games following and pure quality.
Ironic that it’s this game that doesn’t use Sony’s PSSR!
This game does look incredible on Pro.
It is almost comical how much better it, and a number of other games (both 1st and 3rd party) that have had very good Pro upgrades, now look & perform when compared to certain other 3rd party 'AAA' games. The gap was there, but has significantly widened in some cases.
With the PS6 potentially even further out (at least, listening to Mr Cerny the other day thats what it sounded like), hopefully this spurs on devs to keep up.
On this front I was particularly impressed with Capcoms adoption - I always found RE Village and 4 remake to 'creak' in performance terms on base console, and I was concerned about future offerings, but now they perform amazingly well and even look a bit better in the mode using PSSR.
It was the second game I downloaded and my goodness it is a sight to behold for a console
@Rich33 did you watch the DF resident evil PRO Analysis by Tom? Huge upgrades all over the franchise
@Dodoo
I wouldn't say ironic - The upscaler used here is a very engine and use specific case from the little we know.
PSSR on the other hand has to handle MUCH lower input resolutions, multiple game engines, and probably a multitude of other things nobody apart from a few specialists would know.
Just finished the game on my PS5 Basic. Game still looked stunning (the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a game) but in my case it wasn’t the Pro extra horsepower- it was playing it on a 4K OLED display. Used to be a guy who doubted the magic of OLED and now I’m singing its praises. I will say I loved the game, but the ending was disappointing and I don’t see how a potential sequel makes sense.
@Mikey856
I did.
(Someone here told me 4 remake had been patched a couple of weeks back as I had missed the patch coming down, so hadnt bothered opening the game, and erroneously commented that we were still waiting on it.)
I was very pleased to say the least with capcoms efforts, with some really significant increases.
When playing through Village and 4R on base console, you could feel the engine struggle in some places, and we went from that to 80-100fps (120 in some places the base version locked to 60).
I didnt think DF covered the PSSR implementation very well though - they correct themselves in the comments as both Village and 4R use PSSR in their 120hz modes (they said in the video this wasnt the case), and they keep talking trade offs between the upscalers in the video.
As the 120hz mode uses PSSR, and the 60hz modes do not, its easy to go in and compare - which I did on 4R (mainly as I was sure when I looked at it myself the image looked better).
I cant say it was transformative (to use a word they like), but PSSR was a very clear winner just in terms of image quality - it wasnt perfect (and im sure there were some trade offs), but overall it was a very clear and welcome upgrade - and thats on top of the fps boost.
The 'boost mode' results for 2 and 3 Remake were a pleasant icing on the cake so to say.
I started a PS4 replay before the Pro & HZD Remastered were announced. I paused that playthrough and will be playing HZD Remaster first early January after I start/beat Rise of the Ronin and finish Unicorn Overlord. Then I’ll probably play HFW. PS4 version still looks gorgeous on a PS5 tbh
Thank you for the reminder.
Anyways, I'll keep playing my games on my PS5, while waiting for the PS6, because now you made me remind myself that the Pro costs 7K bucks in my country, and that's too much for me and almost everyone living here
@OldGamer999 Really considering they ousted the PC version to another company and it was released totally broken the same studio that didn't even check up on the progress of the game. And when they did took it back but didn't redo and fix the mess but decided to release it anyway broken unplayable for PC gamers on GPUs they said it would work on but it couldn't.
They took a year to actually fix it then and it still wouldn't play GPUs like a RX480 4GB a card they said it would in the end re released it and charged £10 when it should have been free to those who paid for it launch on Steam
@Nepp67 good game , looks fantastic , but yeah you're absolutely right , she's a pri*ck , whinging ,moaning self centered nobhead, "there's only i that can do it" blah blah blah,she's worse than Dutch and his constant rambling, about how he needs more money😂
I mean it won Digital Foundry's Best Graphics of 2022. The Game Awards needs a Best Graphics category not just Art Direction, Guerilla would win it every time.
@Rich33 for sure and it very much makes me want to get in on the action as I’m not much of a Resi player these days I’ll be honest
@OldGamer999 For the same reason GPU makers created AI upscaling - to take some of the strain off of the GPU/CPU by pushing image quality duties to the AI cores instead.
I know I'd never be able to run Cyberpunk 2077 completely maxed out and with full path tracing at 80 - 90 fps (@1440p output) if it wasn't for the AI cores in the Nvidia 4070 Super working their magic.
That kind of stuff you just aren't going to get relying on a software-based upscaler.
Sure, it's all "fake", but if it still feels responsive with a gamepad and looks the part, what does it matter?
PSSR is basically in v1.0. I think, where it needs the most work is denoising - don't know if that's something that has to wait for a 2.0 or something the model can be trained to handle, but that's its weak spot.
I don't think with all that's going on in the world and the Xmas time etc that anyone needs reminding that whatever game looks good on ps5 pro....
But may I remind everyone to have a great Xmas and a positive experience through the rest of this year.
This crap game doesn’t deserve the technical talents who made the 3d engine…
This game was really satisfying to get the Platinum. Story was pretty decent, visuals top notch and most importantly the gameplay/mechanics really left nothing else to be desired. All the weapons and equipment felt great. Wouldn't mind jumping back in when my backlog clears up.
@DennisReynolds No need to be snarky. I did read the article. Hence my comment. The article says “it looks great on PS5 Pro” without offering any substantial new information or explaining why or how. I’m clearly not the only person who feels this way, hence the 24 likes for my comment.
@MasterChiefWiggum "Sony also wants to remind you of how awesome its pricey new upgrade is, releasing a trailer showing off 2022's Horizon Forbidden West enhanced on the PS5 Pro."
@windxtravelerx 7K!? That's like beyond Brazil pricing...where do you live??
@DennisReynolds Yay, another “squint and you might see a slight difference” trailer, and a PS5 Pro apologist defending it.
@MasterChiefWiggum It's an advertisement, not a news article. At times, this site (and its sister sites) seem more like a promotional arm of the company than independent journalists.
@lazarus11 Yeah screw that and I like badass women.
@Nyne11Tyme in Brazil lol
You can pay 6.500 upfront in some websites, but most people will use credit card and pay in installments, and that's when the price goes up to 7000, and that's not including the disc drive
Are we all talking about Horizon Forbidden West?
Apparently there are two types of people in the world: those who enjoy the Horizon franchise and those who don't. I'm one of the former.
I don't think it is perfect, but I find the combination of graphics, environments, plot, voice acting, and combat/weapon options to be amazing.
I played and enjoyed HFW as my first game after finding a PS5 a couple of years ago. I recently bought and played through HZD remastered, since I had never played it. And since there aren't a lot of games that I am interested in (don't play M rated games), I am playing through HFW again and enjoying it even more, having learned how to better utilize various skills, weapons, elements, etc.
I played and enjoyed both Zelda BotW and TotK, but to me they are not nearly as impressive as the Horizon games.
To each our own.
@windxtravelerx wow. That's insane the import taxes are that high. Cheers from the US! Have a great holiday!
@Nyne11Tyme it is lol i just hope PS6 isn't that expensive. And thanks! Have a great holiday you too!!
Are you paid to constantly push PS5 Pro in your news?
Yes HFW looks absolutely stupid on Pro. Like you spent $5K on a PC. Guerilla is unmatched at this stuff
@MasterChiefWiggum Did you actually see a pro in real life? On a decent TV? Or are you just watching compressed youtube videos on 32” TV from 2009?
Edit - likes dont really mean much if you cant see, or give, dislikes.
Its kind of an echo chamber, dont you think?
@species Correct.
That's why I gave you your first "like" on this comment.
@MasterChiefWiggum You can read the title why look at it if you dont want to? I like the information and not everyone is you. I never understood why people are crying about this the game looks epic and soms people have not seen it like me. Dont like it skip and stop crying about it there are so many other things to read.
@MindfulGamer People see not be able to handle different views. If a game is not completely to their personal taste people tend to go out of their way to bury it. People cant accept that not everthing is for them alone the new age is really me me oriëntated.
I'm currently playing Alan Wake 2 on the Pro while also replaying to Spider-Man Remastered on it. I'll definitely replay Horizon as well on the Pro.
This machine is awesome.
@Flaming_Kaiser This is the place to voice my point of view about the article. The only people crying are the people who are defending this unnecessary article. Also, if you “haven’t seen” this game, what rock do you live under? It looked amazing on my PS5 two years ago, and looks maybe slightly better now. So what?
Something, something, edgy anti-pro, anti-Horizon comment. Sorry, I'm trying to fit in but just too lazy to be witty this morning.
@MasterChiefWiggum You do seem to have smarts of chief Wiggum. Kids and new gamers.
I dont check every trailer because i dont have to watch every trailer and yes there are gamers that check in every week or day.
Again you dont like the amount of coverage this game gets and somehow you come to the articles. 😆
