First announced during a Nintendo Direct earlier in the year, Falcom is remaking Trails in the Sky — the first game in the ongoing Trails series.
The remake looked fantastic in its very brief reveal trailer; a fully 3D, ground-up revival of a great RPG. But the announcement was so sudden that fans were left with almost no information to go on. No release window was given, and no platforms — other than Switch, obviously — were confirmed.
Fortunately, the project's returned with a proper announcement trailer. Officially titled Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, it's heading to PS5 in Autumn / Fall 2025. Phew!

Here in the West, it's being published by GungHo Online Entertainment, which is an interesting detail. Ever since Trails of Cold Steel 3 launched in 2019, NIS America has been the sole publisher of Falcom's games in North America and Europe — but that's not the case with 1st Chapter.
The original Trails in the Sky released in 2004 for PC, and was ported to the PSP a couple of years later — but only in Japan. It was finally localised for the West in 2011, but was never brought forward to modern consoles.
Trails in the Sky, alongside its two sequels, are the only mainline Trails games that aren't available on PS5 or PS4 — and so this remake brings us full circle.

Can’t wait for this. I’ve yet to play the originals but this will give me time to do so on PC before this releases.
They’re adding real time combat?? I’m a big fan of that choice, the combat in Ys is normally good but the storytelling is fairly weak. Ys combat with the trails story seems like a good idea.
This is looking great and cant wait to play as I missed the originals on the PSP.
Not a fan of them making a YS X Nordics Proud edition though, makes me not want to play their games day one going forward.
Thank goodness it's not Switch exclusive! I'm so excited for this!
Very surprising that NISA isn't involved with this though. It seemed like they were really hitting their stride with localizing these games faster. I wonder if GungHo was just better equipped for a worldwide simultaneous release? Wonder what the story there is.
Regardless, no more excuses folks who have been waiting to jump into Trails! The time is nigh!
Falcom's first ever simultaneous global release!
With the eventual remake of the other 2 Liberl arc, all Trails of Heroes games are now on a modern platform. I wonder if they'll extend the remake to Crossbell arc too.
@ChrisDeku It's the same combat from Daybreak.
Very much enjoyed Sky back in the day, but now have no desire to go back to medieval backwaters Liberl after modern AF Calvard.
Evo was already a great remake, if this is written anything like Cold Steel 4 then it’ll be borderline unplayable.
Excited to finally start this series.
Man I'm so tired of these devs always leaving people in the dark about the platforms for this long whenever it's announced for switch first. Ms got that weird 3 day exclusivity with atlus. At least with ps they just tell you straight up or right after
@Judal27 Timed console exclusive announcements are the new timed exclusives.
@QiaraIris But Daybreaks Action Combat was limited and very bare. You had an attack, dodge and one special move, it was only made to stun enemies before going tactical or blasting through weak enemies when farming.
Praise Arusha and the Flames. I was worried this was gonna be stranded on the Switch.
And 2025 gets even more expensive. Great news.
@Korgon It's really interesting that NISA isn't involved. Makes you think that GungHo either gave Falcom the best deal, or NISA is already at max capacity launching Daybreak 2 and (most likely) Kai next year.
Still, exciting times to be a Trails fan!
Probably just me but i found the original 2D sprite looks a lot more charming than the 3D graphic. So, i'll stick with my PSP copy.
I have this on Vita but can't resist double-dipping. Glad it's making its way to PS5!
Day one purchase for me.
Looks very nice. I am currently on Reverie and played the Sky trilogy on Steam, so maybe after the Sky SC remaster comes out, I will circle back around to it again. I don't want to get stuck on that cliffhanger a second time.
I guess they are not self publishing after all.
The Trails series is the greatest RPG series ever.
Now I finally can be absorbed into that awesome universe. Can't wait to play it!
Back in the day we had fantastic fan translations but it was of course a long wait, and if you played on PSP you needed homebrew to allow the translation patch to install.
For anyone looking to get into the series, this will be a great place to start as it's the first chronologically in the greater series. Does beg the question, are they going to remake Trails in the Sky 2 and 3? I'm thinking......yes
Love the original game and this looks stunning!
Was hoping it would be out sooner but at least we know more now. Hoping we get an update on Lunar soon.
Kinda disappointed it didn’t get a PS4 release. Guess devs are finally shifting away from it in favor of PS5.
Nah man. This is the game I finished in the series. Then they released like 20 more games. It does look pretty, but nowhere near as nice as it could look on modern consoles. I think the original game is fine to look at. If this doesn't add some kind of new freedom of movement with the transition to 3D, I don't personally care.
@nessisonett Honestly, TitS 1 & 2 are already teetering on the edges of acceptability for me between Olivier and the creepy romantic subplot between the leads.
The gameplay is so darn slow and boring, though. Improving that HAS to improve the experience as a whole.
@Kingleo31 Yeah I noticed that too. The second half of 2024 is when big hit games that could easily have run on PS4 stopped having a PS4 release: Life is Strange Double Exposure, Dragon Quest III HD-2D, Lego Horizon Adventures, to name a few.
@Ralizah The romance for me is far more acceptable when you see them later on in the series, as they’re older and obviously not related, plus you learn far more about the circumstances leading to Joshua being taken in. When they’re skirting around each other it’s a bit weird but it’s one of the few romances in the series actually confirmed, probably because surprisingly enough the female protagonist doesn’t get a harem but the male protagonists do, making canon a bitch. Olivier is ridiculous but there are several characters in his archetype who push things a million times further in a way that’s genuinely hard to read. I’d appreciate them either knocking the vague bisexuality in the head or just outright confirming it though, that nonsense is rife in Japanese media, especially tied to ‘flirty’ characters.
And Evo on the Vita, where I played Sky first, had like 8x speed up so I never found the gameplay very slow or boring. Auto battle worked well too for grinding. I honestly think it’s one of the better designed RPGs of its day, with AP and CP being two separate resources to perform spells or skills. My only gripe is late game bosses having insane amounts of HP and Sky 1 and 2 don’t really allow you to break it the way 3rd and the later games do. Evasion tanks are incredibly broken in almost every game, just stack evasion and get the quartz that has critical hits on counters, makes a lot of fights much easier.
@nessisonett Olivier being vaguely bi is fine. What I don't like is how much of a sex pest he comes off as, which is pretty typical for bi characters. Ugh.
Evo does sound better, but still, the combat was clunky, the level design was abysmal... I just really don't enjoy the gameplay aspects of those titles. The quartz system is also a pain, which is weird, because it feels like an evolution of FF7's materia and I liked that.
