If you were concerned that consoles were dying, you may rest easy, at least for the foreseeable future. PlayStation co-CEO Hideaki Nishino says that, despite the bet on cloud gaming finally appearing to pay off, hardware such as consoles, controllers, and screens aren't going away anytime soon. Oh, and you'd best get used to the idea of PS5 games on the presumptive PS6; Nishino says that our current-gen systems will see support in a similar fashion to what the PS4 is getting right now, and for about as long.
Nishino made the comments in a recent Famitsu article (thanks, MP1st) and was quite upfront: "As of today, many PS4 games are being played, and the number of PS5 games is increasing rapidly. It is unlikely that this will suddenly change tomorrow, so there is no doubt that home video game consoles will remain at the centre of our business for some time."
Nishino goes on to emphasise that: "Some people may misunderstand me when I say this, but if you have cloud gaming on PS Portal and PS5 games running, [they] may think that we have already entered the era of cloud gaming. However, you still need a controller and a screen in your hand, and we believe that hardware will not disappear just yet."
We love nothing more than spicy corporate PlayStation drama, and deliciously, his comments directly contradict those of ex-Sony boss Shawn Layden, who famously and prophetically predicted the current state of the industry. At the start of December, Layden said that the proprietary console's days are numbered and will eventually become "irrelevant".
Who do you hope is correct? The PS6 is all but certain, but what about the PS7? In the comments section below, let us know how long you think the current state of affairs can continue.

I don’t mind because I like to double dip on platinums with games I love (not autopop- a full replay. Although, I tried to replay Hitman 3 on the PS4 version for another platinum but all the damn trophies auto popped because I was connected to the IOI account 😭😭😭 painful experience 😭😭). I’m one of the few who wasn’t angry when Persona 5 Royal got reannounced for the PS5 because I got to replay it with trophies again 😂😂
As long as it doesn’t hinder development on games for the PS6 in terms of graphical and performance enhancements, I’m fine with it. A lot of people also wait until the end of life cycles to upgrade their consoles as well. I’m not very knowledgeable on technology so I’ll leave that stuff to the people who actually know what they’re talking about 😂😂😂
Supporting it now would be nice. 🤣
Well duh. That’s obvious. But even if consoles somehow went away, there’s still plenty of old ones that are still playable to this day that people can enjoy at anytime. Maybe I should dust off my 360 one of these days…As for “cloud gaming,” it’s not for me. I have lousy internet and would never be interested in that. I get disconnected trying to log into Infinity Nikki at least two out of five times I try it.
The selling point of consoles is that they are simpler and cheaper than a gaming PC.
The PS5 Pro is a specialist console and thus supposedly warrants the huge price tag - fine. Fair enough. But my prediction is that if the PS6 matches that price point it'll suffer. Especially in the era of cross-platform.
@LifeGirl there is nothing special about the ps5 pro it was a con to start with and will remain a con over clocking the GPU and calling it a new console is criminal as you just end up bottlenecked to the CPU anyway Sony should be sued for pulling this criminal con on people these people don't know much about it otherwise they would use a pc gamers just want to play no technical stuff and Sony knows this !
@silversteel91
I said this last December on here and wow did I get lynched.
Hope you do ok with the replies 🤣
Though I did call Sony a bad name as well.
A pro is still cheaper then a graphics card, Processor, memory 16GB, NVME drive with 2TB (if we are going to compare), powersupply, Case, Keyboard, Mouse and i left out the OS for the PC.
It works out of the box and the OG PS5 probably is enough for lots of gamers.
@silversteel91 why there are games which looks and runs better on PS5 PRO? How that is a con? Where it is stated as "New console"? Sony has been pretty upfront about it, have not made imaginery BS. I dont get the hate about this )
Cross gen is here to stay
Let’s see what the PS6 can do. If there’s little reason to upgrade, I’ll just keep my PS5. I don’t mind saving money, Sony.
The moment that games go full streaming is the moment that I quit the hobby.
@silversteel91 ah.... The PC master race rears it's ugly head.
Some people have no clue what they are talking about 🙃.
We are getting to a point where graphics won't get major improvements going forward with each gen, since the PS1 each gen has got less impressive in terms of visuals. New consoles will focus more on memory, ai tech and speed so if the PS5 can handle the games I don't see the problem with supporting it.
I mean this what they've been trying to subtly communicate with the the PS4 still around and Pro consoles being released. This is what Shawn Layden was trying to say, that generations are dead because graphics have peaked, it's crossgen going forward and won't matter which console you're on. Consoles will forever be around.
@silversteel91 I was forced at gunpoint to buy my PS5 Pro, and with that gun at my head I was forced to read up about what the Pro could do before I decided to buy it. What a con!
I wrote this message on an 8 year mobile phone that became old after a year when they released a new one for £1000. Why do they keep pointing guns at me?!! I told them I'll buy a new phone!
Cloud gaming appears to pay off? I dont know of anyone that does cloud gaming, wants cloud and so on. It would just be a way for companies to charge you an insane amount each month to use their streaming platform while still paying for software as well without them having to make the hardware
Of course the console are here to stay.ps5 is going to be supported for a very long time.even as ps6 is here.word up son
And if Nishino is going to tell us that physical discs are and will be an important part of the PlayStation gaming experience, I am a happy man.
I've yet to meet a cloud gamer, so long as they keep supporting physical I'll be happy. I don't want to live in an Ubi-dystopia where we don't own the games we play. I've seen what delisting and sanctions can do to the consumer. Cloud gaming just seems like another way for companies and cooperation's to have complete control over the supply and pricing.
Of course there will be a PS6. But there won't be a PS7.
This is why I picked up a pro. As soon as I blagged one of the 30th anniversary Pro bundles I decided to fall into the pro loop instead of adopting the PS6 early. This gen took an age to get going and it seems the next gen will be even worse. There's no need to rush in. The only problem is that if too many people do the same, Sony could have a rocky start to the next generation.
@RagnarLothbrok @GirlVersusGame
Hello! That would be me. I have a PS5 and play only digital games on it, but I also have an active Game Pass Ultimate sub just for xCloud. Since November 2024 I have completed Hellblade 2, Black Ops 6, As Dusk Falls and almost finished Indiana Jones that way, playing them using an Amazon Fire Tv stick and an Xbox controller. I also saved a couple hundred dollars that way. There is a drop off in graphics quality, but the games ran well and were enjoyable. Cloud gaming is the future, regardless of naysayers. Hardware will still be made (PS6 is a given, after that- all bets are off), but if Sony allowed me to play my PS library via cloud I doubt I’d buy a PS6. Funny thing, though. Amazon Luna blows xCloud out of the water when it comes to graphics quality, but their library od supported games is still small. I’ve also tried Geforce Now but didn’t like it much. Too PC for a streaming service. Enjoy your games the way you like, but cloud is only going to get bigger with time IMO.
@gollumb82 Nice to meet you! but you just described my nightmare, though I can see where you are coming from, especially with saving money. In a perfect world all of that would be great but not being able to control your media isn't something a lot of people have experienced yet.
I've been locked out of different accounts and games far too many times (child of a diplomat) I had to start over on so many accounts. There are too many parts of the world where governments limit what content you can access and cloud gaming is something they would easily turn to their favor.
It's not the kind of issue that most gamers run into or are even aware of. And no VPN doesn't solve the problem because it affects everyone in that territory, I spend most of my time in West now but I'm always cautious when it comes to supporting any kind of digital only platform. The difference with physical is that you can import the media you want to play. There are ways around the problem on PC, but console is more tightly regulated.
@__jamiie Why won't there be a PS7? Even if everything is all digital by then you would still need a console to play the games, it won't be cloud only as there's not enough interest in that, Sony will have watched how the Google Stadia went and will want to avoid that scenario.
Well I mean there's still people who are using DVD players and it didn't disappear even if we've Netflix and co.
It’s consoles or nothing for our house PC gaming is unbearable
It’ll likely be the first time I don’t get at launch and wait for a pro model then.
PlayStation 4 will probably be supported into next gen as well at this rate lol
If they got to PS10 then they should use Roman numerallscall it PSX.
The circle would then be complete.
@gollumb82 Congrats i dont want to be the one to adopt it and never will. I can always go back to older consoles. Internet is always a thing that can go down and then in screwed. And the biggest issue i dont want big Corp to control me completely.
PS5 to Be Supported into Next-Gen: because while there's barely anything to play on a ps5 at the minute because they refuse to release much, they can make double the money when next gen comes and have 1 game on 2 generations
Good. I have less than no interest in streaming any games through the cloud, and my interest in pc fades rapidly the more headaches and hangups and things that come between me and actually playing the darn game.
The recipe for fun isn’t complicated:
1) Sit in comfy chair
2) Hold controller
3) Turn on beautiful 4K 144hz OLED
4) Enjoy fantastic exclusive title that makes me glad I bought the console
@silversteel91
"PS5 Pro it was a con to start with and will remain a con over clocking the GPU and calling it a new console is criminal"
Where do you get your info from, because you clearly dont know much about the Pro.
PS5 = 36 CU (18 WGPs) at max 2.23GHz
PRO = 60 CU (30 WGPs) at max 2.35GHz
Hardly overclocking?!
A much larger GPU, running at very similar speeds. In fact, in their comparisons Sony have usually used the same GPU clock speed of 2.17 for both consoles as a normal operating speed.
And this doesnt even include all the other advances the Pro has.
Info taken directly from presentations by Mark Cerny, which are freely available on Youtube, and a Digital Foundry interview with Mark Cerny published 18 Dec 24 on youtube.
@silversteel91
I've been conned so well I'm actually HAPPY with mine. I'm probably a brainwashed loser though.
@Balaam_
I have a serious problem with #4.
You have to exclude others to feel good? If games are good and you want more of them, why would you not want the largest audience and market share for games?
Hardware should be used to support the software. Software should not be used to support he hardware.
@UltimateOtaku91
This is super short sighted. As internet connections get better and more ubiquitous, streaming becomes more and more viable as a delivery service for games. All you need then is a display and a user interface device (controller or controller-like device).
With technology improving at astronomical rates, you can bet your ass that in the 10-12 years it will take to see PS7 there will be massive improvements in digital content delivery that may negate the need for a stand-alone box in the home.
Better off waiting for the PS6 Pro since PS6 games will probably "struggle to run on it" or "not look as visually stunning".
@UltimateOtaku91 I don't believe that dedicated, bespoke hardware from any current console make will be needed. I think we'll have generic, disguised PCs underneath our TVs for any games to download to. I think you'll still be able to "buy" games and install them but streaming and subscription services will take over.
You'll be able to play PlayStation games via an app, Xbox games via an app etc. etc.
Maybe the only bespoke hardware will be controllers.
Let's say, for example, PS6 launches 7 years after PS5 (as the PS5 did with PS4). Then let's say that any hypothetical PS7 launches 7 years after that. We're now in 2034 and the idea of bespoke hardware seems ridiculous.
Plus Sony will save billions in not having to spend money on R&D, manufacturing, shipping etc.
@GirlVersusGame @Flaming_Kaiser
I totally get why people are opposed to cloud gaming. To be able to enjoy it you have to let go of this whole game ownership thing. People always say that they will lose access if the internet goes to hell. I say that if that happens, I will have much bigger issues than games. I also realised I very rarely replay games, if at all. Mostly due to lack of time, but also so many new games coming out that it’s difficult to keep up. In many cases one playthrough is all I can expect from a game and for this streaming is perfect.
Censorship and restricting access to media is definitely an issue, though. With that said, with the way things are going (total control over digital content in the hands of corpos is already a thing) I don’t know if trying to fight it will change anything.
The uptake of new consoles is slower than ever for various reasons, including “forever” games (GAAS), smaller technological advances, and backwards compatibility. They’ll need to keep supporting PS5 games well into next gen. I bet there will still be PS4 games released during PS6’s lifetime.
@__jamiie The major problem with that is Sony would have to include their first party games into a subscription service but Sony are against that as they have said it's not sustainable. But I think that's the only way streaming will be successful as no one wants to pay £70 for a cloud game, especially for nicher games like some jrpgs and indies, everyone will be fighting to be included into a subscription. Maybe they will have two consoles, one like you say which relies on streaming and one that's bespoke but digital only.
@gollumb82 I enjoy stuff better if i can keep playing it. With Cloud that is a thing of the past.
A big reason for me to skip any game that is online only when not needed or without a option to play offline.
I never copied stuff illegal but if i have to keep playing what i payed for then i will have no issues at all with that.
Forced online with singleplayer is a joke. If you look at the latest COD its already completely useless as a physical game even the singleplayer part.
@UltimateOtaku91 I think that you'll still be able to buy PlayStation games (and I think Sony will focus on that route for now) but instead of bespoke hardware, you'll access the PS Store to buy them. I'm imagining a powerful but generic box with massive storage to do so.

@silversteel91
No problem, I was just trying to help you by correcting your erroneous details on the GPU - which is a clear increase of 67% through additional hardware - not overclocking.
(I dont think I mentioned "flops", did I?)
Also, it does contain a stand for the horizontal position which is how I place all my consoles (the stand is not fantastic, but it works just fine).
But thank you, I am thoroughly enjoying it, as are many others - it has certainly been decent value for money so far.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Sounds good. I’ll only be upgrading consoles when the pro comes out anyway. Since that’s when the TRUE vision begins now apparently.
@silversteel91
Im sorry, i might not be reading what you are saying correctly as im having difficulty with your lack of punctuation, but:
1. (As far as we know from Sony) The Pro contains the same SSD as the base PS5 (just bigger at 2Tb) - I thought your comments were about Pro?
2. Some people will always be disappointed with anything.
3. I think the Pro (and PS5) have been decent value, for what you get, particularly considering prices in the PC space - but value is a matter of personal opinion to the person buying, and their personal circumstances.
4. I wasn't "trying" to make you look like an idiot.
Anyway, nice talking with you.
@Rich33 why are u feeding the troll !
@Repo_Dog
Lol.
Just trying to be nice and helpful! (And keep within site rules)
@Balaam_ amen brotha 🙏
There's zero chance of cloud gaming ever replacing consoles or pc. The infrastructure just isn't there in most countries. And where it does work, why would one pay for cloud gaming when one can simply buy the game (physical or digital) and play whenever and wherever one chooses? With better quality gfx and zero latency to boot.
I'll bet my entire salary for 2025 that consoles will be around well into this century, probably the next too.
People still watch TV - invented over 100yrs ago. Yeah there's obviously better tvs now than back then, but new tvs released all the time. I reckon back in the early 1900s people stated the same - 'tvs will be gone in a few decades ...'. People sometimes think on such tiny timescales.
Regardless of the Sony PS6, 7 etc. as forward naming thinking.
Yeah PS5 will be around a while I assume. PS3/360 were for third parties, PS4/Xbox One have for first/third party but usually always third parties as first party do move on and for fair reasons.
The money is there, the games run well enough and so on. Old consoles fit the lower end of pricing and entry access so I can see reason in it at least and audiences are still there till they move on with games stopping support like GTA5 did PS3/360 and PS4/Xbox One as cut off. Fornite and others doing the same or any other online services the console makers limit, hardware limits or otherwise become a factor not just audiences moving on unless they absolutely have to.
To me unless console hardware is a limiting factor it's not hard, most games are still PS3/360 design still, just minor or safer/repetitive linear or open worlds, just better visuals. I am going back to older open worlds, or racing and more and the lack of event types or more sucks in modern games. Even shooters wow just fewer modes I get some don't get played but even still it sucks and the polish isn't any better on the fewer ones anyway because they already worked. XD That and content isn't replaced to fill those spaces either. Just the same safe easy to implement things, pass.
More menus (skill trees and other details, less in the world but the bare minimum so games feel empty, the visual spectale of these generic real world or even fantasy locations), more cutting corners. Pass. Even then licenses, pass don't care but we see them. WHY! Hate casusls/devs doing that.
The design trends are pretty pathetically similar just more dull as gameplay got worse and simpler for audiences aka casuals or too much dev time in other areas. But I think it's not just visuals but because of audiences. Why else do we see games with more boring gameplay and less experimental, with more look at this location IRL or this otherwise.
Or safe nostaglia projects is because even Indies don't want to push out there ideas sometimes, they go oh I know this game, my favourite and copy them because devs know what they know and audiences don't care. Very few of us players or even devs seem to think that far outside the box in the Indie space. So it's good when the ones that do try something crazy different it is 'hopefully' seen and appreciated. Not all are a The Witness or something else. Many ideas are done but also many prototyping isn't happening either.
Unless we see enough cloud support and them wanting to have more control and change pricing of resolution tiers or whatever the case of structuring, controlling games even more of what releases or not and more end up on websites or less credit card or otherwise support then yeah the end of those outside sources will be interesting to see. (like the manga site that went done due to credit card companies saying nope)
@silversteel91 I'm still haunted by that chilly day where Hermen Hulst put a rifle in my mouth and told me "buy the PS5 pro or I'll give this store a new red paint job". I took my credit card out and reluctantly bought it, every time I look at the PS5 Pro on my stand I have horrible nightmares 😔
a@__jamiie Spot on my friend. The only way to make $300-$400 million dollar games and be profitable will be to eliminate hardware cost. Throw it for pennies on the dollar on an online app to anyone with a TV, PC, maybe tablet and let them play it. I love hardware and i think it will continue to do well for a little while longer. But again this site get’s it wrong so many times. COD and FIFA is PS, not spider-man and God of War. When the causal PS fan can play FIFA on a PS app, why would they buy a $500-$700 box? We aren’t there yet, and the keyword is yet. GeForce now is already very very playable, it will continue to get better. If you would have told our parents 30 years ago when they were on the phone corded to the wall that they would have a iPhone that could do what it does they would look at you like you were on drugs or a super genius. Games are 30 years old. New ideas and innovative tech will come to it. I would love to be able to own a Xbox and PS app with all the games. But the Billion dollar question is when and if so would MS keep all that IP to their app? Cause if so Sony is looking thin! MS would have all the games on it’s app that carry the bigger audiences. Sony admitted in the insomniac leak that they feared this deal in ways this site don’t tell cause they are still on the plastic wars. Something MS lost back since OG Xbox and yet here we are!

I really hope there will be PS6 machine in the future with disc drive already inside the machine and with more cooler portion inside like PS5 Fat machine.
And hopefully can play PS4, PS5 & PS6 games in disc as well.
If PS6 can play PS1 , PS2 , PS3 disc games as well, it will be a nice surprise.
@HonestHick Absolutely. I do think that ultimately Microsoft will keep all of its IP tied to its own Xbox app/storefront. The reason they a currently pushing for a more multiplatform approach is because they've failed to lead in hardware sales, it makes financial sense and also expands the user base when hardware is irrelevant.
Anyone who loves Indiana Jones on PS5 is very likely to be a customer when Indiana Jones 3 or 4 comes out and there are no consoles and it's exclusive to the Xbox app.
As you've said, at this point, Microsoft is in a very strong position because if you want to play COD, you're doing it through them.
@symmetrian For movie streaming only bandwidth is relevant for gaming bandwidth and latency. It is likely that the internet bandwidth will continue to improve, however latency will not improve much unless data centers get closer to everybody, which is unlikely. So, I would say game-streaming quality will always depend on where You live exactly no matter the promised bandwidth, or games get dumbed down to better work with bad latency (i.e. the game predicts user actions and only occasionally takes user input serious).
@Futureshark Not a bad idea but it wouldn't work as it already exists, Sony released it back in 2003
I wouldn’t be surprised if cloud gaming is the distant future, but for that to really take hold internet infrastructure needs many more years to build out. Not to mention ISPs will ultimately be the gatekeepers that get to decide whether or not providing sufficient service to a given region is profitable.

Imo, in the next few years Sony, Microsoft (and certainly others) will make heavy pushes towards streaming and cloud gaming.
It's already started, with both of them.
Microsoft is slowly but surely making it's exit from hardware consoles (now "every device is an xbox", eh? Marketing BS for "streaming is the future", on any device that's online: consoles, TV's, phones/tablets, handhelds, PC/laptop etc).
And Sony is already strongly pushing towards digital games on PS5 Pro, and online game steaming on it's Portal device...
Be prepared for PS6 to be the last classic (desktop) playstation console.
In the next few years Sony will release a new handheld device, akin to Steam deck, that will run alongside the desktop hardware PS5 Pro and PS6, and alongside plain Portal device.
In order to get it's clients to let go of desktop consoles, and get more and more used to the idea of portability and online streaming - help make the transition easier.
PS5 Pro and PS6 will, of course, be supported for some years to come.
But, imo, by 2035 (the 7 year life-span of PS6) those 2 platforms will be phased out and replaced with handhelds.
And beyond 2040 online streaming on TV's, phones and "plain" devices like Portal (no processing power, online streaming only) will be all that remains from the existing consoles...
And if you adorn a tin-foil hat for a second, you can say this is the best way for those corporations to control everything gaming-related. From what you play, to how you play, to for how long and how much you must pay for them all.
Gone will be the days of disk sharing, game preservation efforts, "game owning" discussions etc.
You either accept what shtuff they make available, at the prices and duration they make it available for, or you can stop gaming.
If you don't like it, you can go to the competition.... good luck, 'cause that's gonna be... ummm... no one.
But that's all fairy tales, I know...
@silversteel91 PS5 Pro, 60 CUs RDNA hardware support, PS5 36 CUs RDNA 2 hardware support.
Not sure how that is a "con" ?
@gollumb82 In the US game pass Ultimate is $250 a year. It has increased in price twice since September of 2023. That is $1000 in 4 years. Not sure how much you are saving?
Sure if you compare the price of new games, not on sale then you can make a good argument. However for people like me that never buy new games and wait for deep sales, it is kind of hard to make that argument.
Not to mention that when I last tried Xbox Cloud streaming, in December of 2023, it worked "OK" for single player type games. Forza 5 was a crash fest because of the lag. I can't imagine playing BO6 MP.
