Trademark renewals don't always mean anything, but fresh registrations relating to the classic Ecco the Dolphin series have brought fans back from the dead with hopes they may be tied to a new game. Both registered on 27th December 2024 and made public yesterday, SEGA has renewed its "Ecco the Dolphin" and "Ecco" trademarks in Japan.
While it wasn't confirmed to be part of the first batch, SEGA did recently reveal its efforts to resurrect some of the older franchises in its back catalogue. Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage are all on their way back, and Ecco the Dolphin is of a similar mould. While the franchise's handful of games are largely tied to the SEGA Mega Drive and Dreamcast, there was the odd port here and there to Sony systems, like Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future for PS2.
With the Xbox Developer Direct taking place next week, some fans are even putting two and two together and suggesting a new Ecco the Dolphin game is the mystery title Microsoft has to announce. That's off the back of a rumour the game in question is a new entry in a long-running Japanese franchise, though it seems unlikely to be the case. Fans thought their wish had come true a few years ago when an IGN announcement teased a new game reveal with the sounds of dolphins, but it never materialised.

I need an open world Ecco the Dolphin game where you can explore the ocean with friends
wow, now there's a throw back! But to answer the question, I'm really not sure what sort of game it could be, for some reason the only thing that comes to mind, is the dolphin mini game from FF7 Rebirth.
Big game of my childhood, so I'd be down!
I'd be intrigued at least.
I played through the Tides of Time dozens of times back in the day. Used to love those games. I remember thinking the water graphics were amazing...
one of the the very few games that I would actually like a remake/remaster/rebuild of
Such a weird game.
It has a reputation that far exceeds its quality, one of the most infuriating and down right badly designed games ever making you repeat really tough sections because it doesn't save small bits of progress while simultaneously giving you hardly any hint as to what you are doing.
One constant underwater level with you needing to chase down oxygen pockets all the time.
Awful awful game.
It was probably one of the most challenging games I ever played on Sega Mega Drive it really was, the music was lovely though really did have a nice soundtrack
@Medic_alert graphics, audio and atmosphere were top tier. It was tough and unforgiving (it actually made me cry once) but helped me get my monies worth as a kid
I heard The Midnight do this one live to break up a set, it was pretty cool.

The music in those games is something to tickle your ears.
Let's hope. Ecco is a special game.
I would love a new one or a remake that is well done.
Sega genesis ecco the dolphin.is a way better name than sega mega drive.but its all good.i want that shinobi game.its been a while.word up son
I'd take a remaster of the Dreamcast version, I enjoyed that gane and the puzzles
some one already said it but just remaster the dreamcast game
Hoping for a gritty narrative driven tale where Ecco has to take down deep sea miners and oil platforms, whilst answering questions about the meaning of life and happiness.
