As we enter 2025, one game is already dominating the conversation: Grand Theft Auto 6. Following up the massively successful Grand Theft Auto 5, which first launched way back in 2013, Rockstar Games' latest will no doubt be another momentous release.

Until then, modders have cooked up something seriously big for the current incarnation of the franchise — a mod that adds the entirety of Liberty City to GTA 5.

A group of 12 calling themselves World Travel released the mod on 25th December 2024, and it's not only been very popular, it's been met with incredibly high praise. While other GTA 5 mods have attempted to bring other cities into the game, this is the most ambitious and most successful yet.

With the mod installed, players can fly seamlessly from Los Santos to Liberty City, which has been recreated to match the fidelity of the game's base content. It includes a fully functional subway system, police, traffic, pedestrians, and basically all the features you'd expect of an official rendition. It's extremely impressive.

Of course, the mod won't be heading to consoles, but the good news is that GTA 6 is indeed coming fairly soon, which is sure to be a massive step forward. Speaking in an interview on YouTube, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says the next GTA will be "extraordinary" and "worth waiting for".

Zelnick speaks about its success with GTA and other major series: "We think that the combination of investing heavily in the creative aspects of what we do and also letting the audiences anticipate a release, sometimes for a long time, is why our intellectual properties have proven to be so durable," he says.

"Unlike many of our competitors, every one of our releases inside a franchise has done better than the prior release – this has been true for like 20 years – and in most instances that isn't the case in the video game business," he continues. "In most cases you'll see a steady decline release after release, but that isn't the case with us because we take our time and we really focus on presenting something to the audience that they just haven't seen before."

So, while we won't be playing that fancy Liberty City mod in GTA 5, it really does sound like GTA 6 is shaping up to be something special.
