Astro Bot, the PS5 exclusive 3D platformer, is now the most-awarded game in its genre on record, accumulating 104 Game of the Year nods so far.
That's according to this site, which tracks all Game of the Year awards attributed by eligible media outlets. The count isn't complete, but even if the figure stays at 104, it comfortably beats the previous record holder, It Takes Two, which earned itself 88.
While it isn't the game with the most GOTY awards ever, Astro Bot does take the title for platformers — at least according to this site, which only has records dating back to 2013. However, as pointed out by TheGamer, the number of awards being dished out in the last decade is much greater than it used to be, so it's very likely Astro takes the record even without all historic data.
We awarded Astro Bot our top honour for 2024, and our readers agreed, voting it their favourite game of last year as well.
Its success in awards season shouldn't be too much of a surprise, given the glowing reception it received from both critics and fans.
Are you surprised to see this game become the platformer with the most GOTY awards ever? Tell us in the comments section below.

Well deserved. A true joy of a game from start to finish. Hopefully more Astro to come
I‘m curious about how many GOTY awards Super Mario Galaxy won in 2007.
Does anyone know how many GOTY awards are there today and in 2007? My gut tells me that we‘ve seen an inflation over the years.
Great game in 2024.
Hoping for some campaign DLC at some point this year 2025.
Absolutely deserved. Had a smile on my face even when I wanted to throw my controller in rage at my own mistakes!
I love Astro Bot, but doesn't this really signify there are too many awards?
Didn't know there were that many sites left and that their awards are worth anything
For me it's also the best platformer ever.
Enjoyed the game got the platinum....but my days it's been overhyped so much ..just a nice little game...really easy
It'd have 500 if it were up to me
Game definitely deserves it. Just a joyful game all around.
And it deserves every single one of them.
I might have played it if Astro wasn't such a bland looking character design.
I think it says something that there are over 100 GotY awards available - it pretty much waters it down so they don't mean all that much.
I mean, if I publish a YouTube video naming it my personal GotY, will that increase the total to 105? And why would anyone care what MY opinion is, except for ME?
@Max_the_German There's way more today but Galaxy won a pretty small percentage of GOTY awards, Bioshock was the big winner in 2007.
@RobN you might be shocked to learn this but there are more than 100 countries in the world and most have their own media outlets
@UltimateOtaku91 You're either young or haven't played many platformers. Either is fine btw, but you've got so many great platformers to catch-up on!
N.i.c.e. i wonder what team asobi will do next for theyre game.word up son
Hopefully big wigs take notice and we see more games like Astro.
@Max_the_German Galaxy also had extremely stiff competition in 2007 (Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, Halo 3) whereas Astro has benefited from this being a lighter year in terms of top-quality releases.
Not taking anything away from Astro, it's my personal GOTY, but context is important for these awards. It's the same with Metaphor, I absolute adore Atlus JRPGs but there is no chance it would be getting serious GOTY buzz if there was more prominent competition. Not even Persona 5 did, which is arguably a superior game (it had to compete against Breath of the Wild, Horizon ZD and Mario Odyssey).
Its a fantastic game so im not surprised.
@glennthefrog It just is a fantastic game i have not seen something made with so much love in ages.
@ChrisDeku Wrong! it's been scientifically proven that only the US and the UK exists, plus both those countries only have 1 games media outlet (NOT hundreds) so how can there be more than 100 goty awards in the world? 🙂
Maybe we need more games like this. What do I know!
@UltimateOtaku91 id second you on that.
Will be interesting to see what Nintendo does next with Mario as Astro Bot has set a new bar.
Go Astro GO!!!! This could not be more deserved this game is practically flawless ^__^
Regardless of how fanboy-ey it might sound, Astro's praise is kinda annoying when Mario's been doing this s*** better for years.
Love Astro, and I hope its success reverberates throughout PlayStation Studios. Buuut... Mario better.
@RoomWithaMoose I agree. The talk about it setting a new bar is laughable really. Astro is on roughly the same tier as Odyssey and Galaxy, which in itself is already extremely high praise.
I love it! Keep on dancing
@outswimmingtheflood I'm 33 but as a kid I didn't play any platformers on the PS1, PS2, N64 or GameCube so those I've missed. But what I have played Astro Bot is at the top, followed very closely by Mario Odyssey and Mario Galaxy 2.
@DennisReynolds sorry, Dennis, but Nintendo has nothing to learn from Astrobot. I played it, it’s absolutely great, but not (better than) a Nintendo Mario 3D platformer.
It’s a great tribute to everything Playstation though. Nostalgia did hit hard, and I’m sure it did with others on this forum too.
This just tells me there are far too many awards available these days. Astro Bot is certainly a great game, not amongst the very best 3D platformers but a must for fans of the genre
Fair enough. Personally I got a couple hours in at launch and haven't really got back to it except for doing the odd level. It's a great game but I don't enjoy playing it for more than a level at a time.
Personally prefer spyro
I love Astro Bot and it is absolutely the best game that released in 2024 but I would still hate to see it become overrated. Don't get me wrong it's a great 3D platformer, probably the best one to release in the last 10 years, but it is no where near the same level as the best 3D Mario games. It is specifically lacking in movement options and techncial skill that makes those games so infinitely replayable. Astro Bot while great, it is kind of a one and done type of game. Maybe you 100% it and go for the platinum but that's it. There's nothing to master or go back to
@Friendly Its better then Odyssey and Sunshine. I would put the Galaxy games above it because you can't beat perfection but out of the 3D Mario games i would say its better then most of them.
Deserved this what true videogaming is all about. No nonsense GAMEPLAY!!! MARIO GALAXY 1&2 are still KING though:)
Very well deserved 🤝
@DennisReynolds what makes it better specifically? What has Nintendo to learn from Astrobot?
Astrobot out here busting a move he just can't stop winning 😆😆😆😆😆😆
@Friendly that they have competition
@Friendly That as the other person said they have competition from someone who with one full title has shown they're at their level. Personally i find Odyssey to be the 2nd weakest 3D entry (Sunshine is no 1), its a good game but those "open world" elements for me dragged it down and i found the more transitional levels to be really short and lacking the spark of the Galaxy games, its still a 8/10 game but Astro Bot for me blows it away.
@DennisReynolds @Drago201 sure, they have competition, which is great. They also had that back in the sonic/Spyro/Crash/Banjo days. Competition is good for us consumers.
But Astrobot didn’t bring the genre forward (yet), there’s no mechanic or feature that Nintendo has not done themselves or that hás to be implemented in the next 3D platformer because otherwise the game is lagging behind. It might actually lack a bit in the moveset department. Bob Wulff describes my opinion well in below video:
https://youtu.be/KnDDHR-OMxw?t=2796&si=-yZcZKHWQD7SDGoF (50:32 onwards specifically)
Again, it’s great, I liked it a lot, and it’s good that there’s competition. But Nintendo doesn’t have to adopt anything from the game in their next Mario game.
I also hope Sony will acknowledge it as a success, and move away from their attempts at live service high price games.
Very well deserved.
I still think Sackboy - A Big Adventure should get far more plaudits than it does though. Easily my favourite PS5 platformer after Astrobot.
I hope this gives Sony a little incentive to work on games like this and reduce resource on their quest for the next Fortnite.
There's some creative minds at Sony, but there's too much red tape right now.
It' deserves every bit of success it'd getting its a great game to there with the best platformers ever
