Ubisoft says that pre-orders for its upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows are "solid". While specifics weren't forthcoming, they are currently "in line with those of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the second most successful entry of the franchise". Players who do pre-order will gain the Claws of Awaji expansion in the future, and the 10+ hour offering sounds pretty enticing.
Speaking today (thanks, Eurogamer), Ubisoft daimyo Yves Guillemot sounded quite optimistic about the company's prospects: "I want to commend the incredible talent and dedication of the entire Assassin’s Creed team, who are working tirelessly to ensure that Shadows delivers on the promise of what is the franchise's most ambitious entry yet. In parallel, we are progressing well on our cost reduction program."
As fans of great video games, we can't help but root for Ubisoft, although there is no getting around how make-or-break Shadows appears to be for the French firm. Still, there's every reason to be optimistic, as the more we see (and having gone hands-on), the more we're convinced the Assassin's Creed series isn't going out without a serious fight.
Have you pre-ordered Assassin's Creed Shadows? Did you do so because you believe in the game, or could you simply not resist the Claws of Awaji DLC? Let us know in the comments section below.

"As fans of great video games, we can't help but root for Ubisoft"
That's an oxymoron
I will be pre-ordering here soon. The game looks really great! I'm definitely rooting for this game too. AC has given me many hours of entertainment over the years and I expect Shadows to do the same.
@yazzika only if you ignore decades of great games
I just cannot bring myself to pay full price for this knowing that in 2-3 months it will be 50% off. Especially when it sounds like they still plan to continue laying off staff rather than putting top management in the firing line.
I’m not preordering it seeing how Valhalla was at launch… I’ll definitely catching this down the road and it’s a Ubi game so after 6-8 months it will be on sale absolutely
Their offering the DLC expansion as preorder bonus is actually tempting. I’m getting good vibes from this game.
Hey, I've seen this one before. When Ubisoft claimed they had the same solid amount of pre-orders with Star Wars Outlaws...
It looks great personally. Looks like it’s selling well on Amazon UK if the charts are to be trusted.
@JokerBoy322 But Outlaws was a total success and didn’t cost Ubisoft millions or make them cut tons of staff! I’m sure this absolutely won’t happen with Shadows!
@Khayl Marvel had years of great movies! Then Ant Man Quantumania and The Marvels happened…
Just launch the game already! My preorder has preorders at this point.
I preordered this months ago while playing through Valhalla. I have high expectations for this game and I think it’ll be better than most expect it to be. I hope it sells well. I’m not sick of the franchise yet, and there’s so much more they can do with it.
I've not pre ordered it but I'll be purchasing it at some point in the future. As somebody's already pointed out its a ubisoft game and will be heavily discounted in a few months and by that time most of the early kinks will be ironed out.
In before they say overall sales numbers were below expectations in 3 months time.
Well Ubisoft has to be very very optimistic about this game. They truly need it to succeed for their financials as a corporation. So of course they will report a positive “pre-sales” for their investors. Too much riding on this game. Not sure about folks about here but I don’t need the validation or affirmation of others for me to buy any game. With that said I have my doubts this game will reach critical mass for many reasons. Like any established IP, the company can rely on those that will buy because they see a new game with [insert IP here].
This is Ubisoft chance for redemption. I for one have a good feeling about this, but i will wait for some reviews
Haters gonna be crying when the game sells well, i cannot wait for those tears!
Hmm, if I was working at Unisoft and my job wasn't directly related to AC, I'd be worried about my job security...
I really did not like Valhalla upon completion/in hindsight despite getting stuck in the Ubisoft icon chasing trance for over 100 hrs in it.
That aside, The reality is, despite all of the ignorant small minded culture war discourse getting slapped on this game just like many others, these AC games have sold a min of 10 million copies for some time now and that's a verifiable fact. This one will be no different.
It will sell even if it is more formulaic Ubisoft stuffs. I hope it's good but from previews it looks like another carbon copy of the previous 3 including all that was imo tedious and lame. Post Valhalla I've learned my lesson that inspired creative works don't come from them anymore and that by boardroom design scheme they are stuck in. Just isn't worth a day ine/full price investment.
I will wait for the guaranteed steep Ubisoft discounts to come later.
Ubisoft loves to say things like this but in the end, it will sell poorly. They already changed their plans since they will release it and move on quickly. EA did the same thing with Dragon Age.
Imagine if Ubisoft said "Pre-orders are doing terrible and nobody wants to buy our game." In other words, I'll believe the hype when I actually see it.
Who are these people preordering before seeing reviews? Not just for this game.
When was the last time a digital game sold out at launch and you couldn’t get it?
Don’t understand people white knighting for infinite supply consumer goods and throwing money at them unseen.
We’ve had a string of hyped up white knighted games that turned out to be mediocre in the past year. Some so bad they were withdrawn from sale.
Most recently we’ve seen Veilguard and Avowed where everyone was throwing money and proudly shouting about it on forums, only to spend weeks after launch having to pretend on those same forums that they were enjoying their 7/10 mediocre £70 slop.
AC will be £30 come the summer.
If you wait, you don’t end buying mediocre titles, and even if the game is good, waiting six months results in you getting the best patched version of the title at half the price.
Preorder is not just gambling, you are buying the worst version that game will ever be, at the highest price it will ever be.
I hope Shadows is great and it does well for Ubi, but I also hope Ubi dares to reinvent AC again for the next iteration. And they should try to diversify a bit more, drag some old IP on the forefront (SplinterCell, Rayman, Prince of Persia, finally release BG&E2 ...)
@breakneck this, exactly this
Im in no way convinced about this game yet - there is just something about the 2 main character thing too.
I sort of enjoyed ACV - except the parts played in a different 'realm' which I thoroughly disliked, but wished the game was a bit more quality over quantity.
Oh, and like a few other comments, you just know it will be 50% off after a couple of months based on Ubisofts track record!
I got a copy if this free with my new PC otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. I'll probably give it a few months after release so they can finish it before I give it a go.
@Cornpop76
I'm one of the ones that pre-order games. Is it a gamble? Sure I guess that's one way to look at it. I look at it a bit differently though.
I try to support games I wish to see succeed as best as I can whenever I get the chance. I've been a fan of AC since the very beginning. It's easily among my favorite series out there. The only one I didn't initially click with was Odyssey and yet eventually I came around on that one too. That sort of track record will get me to support a series for the long haul as I don't want to see the series potentially go into decline/go away if I can help it in my own small way. It's like supporting a sports team. Sure I could just watch the game on TV but sometimes I like to go to it in person even if I have to deal with annoying traffic/overpriced food and drinks.
Could I wait for a sale? Sure I could. And for people that do wait for a sale or just aren't interested, more power to them. Spend your money how you see fit. I will pre-order/pay full price if I believe the product is worth full price. Judging by the track record of the series, I'll get my money's worth out of this one too.
And if it turns out to not be quite so good, well I don't necessarily need my games to be an absolute masterpiece to find enjoyment out of them. As long as it's polished up well enough then I'll probably still feel like I got my money's worth in the end.
I'm definitely not pre-ordering this garbage from Ubisoft. I'll wait until the game comes out, see what real people are saying about it, and only when it's -80% off will I buy the Gigabunga silver gold platinum ultimate special masterpiece edition at a discount.
I hope Ubisoft dies a slow, painful death or finally starts making good games again.
Let's see what they say about sales a few months after release. It will be really interesting to see how this one does at retail. A mediocre, but massive, development studio's fate hangs in the balance.
To be fair to Ubisoft I really think they deserve credit for outlaws as it was superb for my tastes.
Keeping quietly optimistic for shadows too though I won’t be picking it up for a while as I’ve too much else to play!
I preordered shortly after the State of Play made things sort of apparent to me that the first half of the year will be quiet from PlayStation (and after Avowed’s reviews sort of rained on my interest for the game). I was nervous to preorder as I thought we may have a bunch of games in April and May, but nah… looks like two Gamepass months if I finish it quickly. It feels like I’ll have time to get deep into KCD2 before it releases too. Feels like a year that it’ll be ok to play the big games sort of leisurely.
Removed - unconstructive
Can't wait. It's the only thing I'll be playing once it releases.
AC always sells well.
Although I always say never go full Ubisoft… I will be going full Ubisoft in this case and pre-ordering. I just feel that after buying all of their games for half price over the years and thoroughly enjoying the vast majority of them, with all of their trials and tribulations it feels like the right time to pay full price for a game I know I’ll get hours upon hours of enjoyment out of.
I've preordered this as this era of japanese history has always been a favourite of mine, plus the free expansion was a bonus.
Any word on other expansions for this yet?
@dskatter Your Marvel comment literally makes no sense. The perception of contemporary Marvel does nothing to disprove @Khayl and Ubisoft's legacy.
I don't even know what that comparison is supposed to prove in the first place. That entertainment companies can consistently produce good stuff, then consistently produce mediocre stuff? Okay. That's certainly an observation. Given how the two companies are completely different (different industries, different timeframes, different levels of independence, different relationships to legacy IP, different impacts on their respective industries, different qualitative output, different struggles), I don't really know why the trajectory of one would ever be directly relevant to the other. Maybe the only relevant thing they have in common is establishing a successful brand identity and running it to the ground. But even how that played out for both companies is pretty different.
And then what's even the implication for Marvel? Using @yazzika for context: that they only make bad stuff now? Guardians 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine aren't what I'd consider bad. Even half their shows are decent at worst. Are we saying they only made good things until Ant 3 and Marvels? It's pretty easy to argue Phase 3 was the only time their movies were consistently great, and even then we had average movies like Captain Marvel.
I'm just baffled by this comment: what's Marvel got to do with anything? Why would Marvel's struggles dissuade anyone from celebrating Ubisoft's past? What does it even mean apropos Marvel? What's the comparison supposed to say about contemporary Ubisoft?
@RoomWithaMoose Companies that have produced good stuff, can also produce bad stuff. That's baffling?
I hope it does well. The endless ragging on Ubisoft is getting seriously old at this point.
@PrincessPeach11 "That's certainly an observation."
Uh oh someone's not gonna be happy
@anon_pel222 valhalla was fine at launch
@somnambulance KCD2 is superb , I cant get enough of this game of thrones simulator 😁
@Cornpop76 I preordered KCD2 physical its superb and dont regret it one bit, and veilguard was good for an action rpg I really enjoyed it.
I will preorder soon, just gotta decide whether to buy it on PS5 or Series X 🤔 it often comes down to how much free space I have in each console 😂
@Cornpop76 Wouldn't mediocre slop be a 5/10? 7/10 is still good, sometimes great.
Also, Avowed has more of an 8/10 than a 7/10 response at the moment. I'm not saying that pre-ordering is worth it, especially at $70 or £70, but if people want to pre-order, they can do that. I personally don't pre-order, but I do sometimes buy games at full price after they release, specifically if they have very good reviews.
@lazarus11 Not sure how I feel about it yet. I bought it right after the State of Play, saying, “Yes, it looks like I can fit a 100 hour game into my year now and also take a risk, as I’m not going to preorder much today.” Lol.
I do really like the atmosphere and all, but I’m still in the tutorial. The tutorial has been great thus far, but I know I’ve not “played” it yet. Looking forward to seeing how it plays as I get further in.
@somnambulance it gets better the more you play it , and you get better the more you do, saying that I've played a couple of infuriating quests , one i didn't know what to do, looking back now though it's really easy , and another which took me far longer than it should have , ive kind of learned now to do a quest like I'd do myself in real life , youre not an invicible killing machine , sometimes the only choice is to run away,or hide in the bushes until everything is clear, I love the fact that each quest has a multitude of options to use.
I’m waiting til mid march to preorder, as I figure if I still am intrigued I’ll go for it. I just want to enjoy games, man. If it flops oh well, but it looks enjoyable enough to get a good hundred hours out of. Granted I am likely still going to be so deep into monster hunter my own cat will have to hunt me.
I hope the game turn out to be great, that everyone enjoys it, and Ubisoft also do good from it so they may continue to learn and deliver us more.
@HotGoomba at no point have I said that people can't pre-order.
People can go out in their garden and eat worms if they want. Free country. Their business.
I'm just asking WHY they pre-order. I've never seen a digital game sell out.
I don't recall Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla or Mirage selling out.
As I say, it seems reasonable to wait for the review embargo to end, and if that is 2 days before launch and you want to pre-load, then that sounds perfectly sensible to pre-order.
But these people who are proudly telling the world that they ordered the game a month before launch...........umm yeah cool story bro's but what ever would possess you to do that.
@Cornpop76 Understandable. I cannot buy games early anymore, especially after I got Miles Morales for PS5 almost a year before I actually got a PS5.
Anyways, I'm hoping at Assassin's Creed Shadows is good. That'd be cool.
@Cornpop76 what possessed me to pre order ac easy answer it's my favourite game franchise id happily go in blind not reading reviews as the reviewer may not like the game that don't mean I won't enjoy it we all have our own tastes like I won't play dark souls games
Why pre-order a game that's going to be riddled with bugs day one
I wouldn't touch this unless its on sale for $5.
As a fan of Japanese history I definitely won't be getting this game.
The hype train be running and likely crashing and burning upon release!
@JokerBoy322 To be fair they actually have the data to back it up. Outlaws sold around 150,000 pre orders up to launch and Shadows has over 300,000 pre orders as of wc 10th Feb.
@Darylb88 lol, ok. Like the "data" they also had to back up Star Wars Outlaws being a huge hit too. However Ubisoft does NOT have over 300,000 pre-orders. From their own meeting with investors they said they had "around" 300,000. That could be any number, it could be 270,000 and they just rounded up. They've been caught doing it before...
@Joker Boy322 I don't remember them sharing data on the pre orders for Outlaws. It could be 270,000 or 325 either way it's a solid start for pre orders. If you don't like Ubisoft just say that .
