Battlefield 2042 came out in 2021, and to say the community received it poorly would be quite an understatement. We'll admit to bouncing back then, never to return, but it seems EA has clawed back some goodwill in the intervening years: the developer has told fans to "tune in" on Monday (today) for more information about the upcoming Battlefield community testing program it plans to employ for the still-unnamed next entry in the series.
On X, EA announced the news via the official Battlefield account, which quickly went viral. More surprising, at least from our jaded, detached perspective, is the level of hype this announcement caused in the comments. Gamers, it seems, crave a return to the Battlefield franchise.
As is tradition, the nebulous piece of concept art accompanying the announcement has come under intense scrutiny as fans search for any scrap of information. It's believed that at least some of the action will occur in Gibraltar, Spain. Still, eagle-eyes have already noted that this new image bears Arabic characters and graffiti in the background, which, in addition to using what appears to be a real-life explosion from Gaza as a reference, suggests a Middle Eastern setting.
Are you ready to forgive and forget and potentially learn to love Battlefield again? Are you excited about the prospect of participating in EA's community testing program? Let us know in the comments section below.

This should be entertaining, ferocious and passionate fan base that refuses to learn lessons.
Endless " Won't get me again DICE", for a year straight on BF threads....
Boy do I miss a sincere BF game, please don't screw this up
Battlefield 4.
That's all they need to do.
No real historical events edited for an agenda. No messing with the formula to the point that it is no longer recognisable as a Battlefield game.
There is no secret formula, no mystery to success. Just go back to basics and they'll come.
It's kinda amazing how consistently they've been able to screw up Battlefield. I thought 2042 was going to be the comeback but the open beta was just awful. I've lost faith in DICE at this point, they should let Respawn make it.
2042 was the biggest mistake I've made regarding game purchases. I want a new BF but the last one changed my habits for ever. No more hopium only have faith in proven track records.
This should all be common sense but I allowed myself to listen to their rhetoric rather than truly examining the state of the beta.
Forget about any more mediocre campaigns - just please deliver the ultimate multiplayer experience a la BF 2 /3/4 ...2042 did redeem itself a little but too little too late.
I remember playing BF1942 back in the early 00's and literally playing it for days at a time. Bring that back !
2042 improved massively after a while. It's clear a lot of folk didn't bother checking it out properly. Why not just jump on the hate bandwagon instead, right? 😂
The use of Gibraltar and Arabic potentially pointing to a North African/Middle East setting is a PR catastrophe waiting to happen. It’s 2025, not 2003.
BF2042 started as a steaming pile of trash, but boy did they turned it around. As a really long time BF fan (played every single title since BF2), I can fairly say that IMO no BF can match the gunplay of BF2042. But the redemption came too late. Hoping for a proper BF to be announced.
Battlefield 4 was peak Battlefield. They need to recapture this.
Bring back Bad Company.
Either bring back Bad Company for a 3rd game to finished it's story or redo Battlefield 3 or 4 with the new engine that's the battlefield people loved. COD hasn't really changed much online at all and it works so EA/Dice should just do the same
Bad Company 2 was the last Battlefield I enjoyed so needless to say I'm going to need some serious convincing to be excited about anything Battlefield related. I wish them well though.
They better not fck this up again. COD is trash and there arent any good mp shooters on consoles anymore
BF 2042 eventually turned out allright. I stuck around and sank 600+ hrs. in it, it may not be a very good BF game but it's a solid online shooter in it's current state. It does a few things better than any BF before it but you have to play extensively to notice and appreciate it. The gunplay is good, very responsive and the game runs and looks really well. The decision to focus on 64 players again for the maps that released later on was a good one, just like the return of the class system, although it's slightly different than before. Curious to see what DICE comes up with this time around
I got into Battlefield with Bad Company, drawn by the destruction engine they were using back in that era. When they moved away from what I saw as THE differentiator in the fps space, I lost interest. I've tried BF games here or there since, but I just don't find them compelling when they're just "big COD." That does nothing for me. The dynamicism and variety of what those old matches offered are still unrivaled for me in the space. Until they go back to a focus on that, nothing will matter to me.
I recall Bad Company 2 being tantalising for the sole reason that there wasn't really anything else like it on console, from what I recall.
Large maps with multiple families of vehicles, and a robust engine for tearing down buildings. All of that, at the time, was novel and exciting.
But "real-life explosion from Gaza" shows that they're about as tasteless as they always have been. I don't have any faith in this return.
@nessisonett I don't know if people would be put out by that. There are plenty of shooters that have maps in the Middle East and North Africa.
I played 2042 for 280hrs or so and had a good time.
Definitely looking forward for the next one.
@LifeGirl it's funny you say BF4 when it was by far and away the most buggy launch they ever had, but every one keeps saying BF2042 is. After they fixed BF4, people must have forgotten how borderline unplayable it was for a while, on PS4 at least. This isn't a go at you by the way, just find it funny people never seem to bring it up
@wildcat_kickz Yeah but the situation has very much changed. It feels lazy to just go back to having generic Arab setting given all that’s happened in the world. At least 2042 goes for a weird Cold War 2 vibe.
@nessisonett I see what you're saying, but I'm not sure the nationality of the militaries has much bearing on the perception of a Battlefield game. Battlefield has typically had maps from all over the globe, so I assume there will be at least a couple from the Middle East. But there will also probably be Eastern European maps, Nordic, Asian, etc.
