We've been following the development of the extremely promising Dune: Awakening for some time now, and it seems our faith is finally about to be rewarded. Publisher and developer Funcom has revealed the game's PC release date, 20th May, having previously pledged that the PS5 version would follow shortly after.
We got another tantalising look at "the most ambitious survival game ever made, set on the most dangerous planet in the universe, Arrakis, " which looks unbelievable in scope. We still have so many questions about how its persistent, massively multiplayer world will work, but there is no denying that what Funcom has been cooking up looks like an incredibly faithful adaptation of both Frank Herbert's legendary universe and, more specifically, Denis Villeneuve's vision of it.

Pre-orders will start soon, and the base game will cost $49.99 or your local equivalent, so you'd better start conserving your resources.
What do you think of Dune: Awakening? Do you think it could have a seismic impact on the 2025 GOTY race, which is already shaping up to be hotly contested this year? Let us know in the comments section below.

On the fence about this. But open minded.
Would buy a topless Sting skin for sure.
Dune without religion just feels weird to me, but I’m willing to see how this one goes.
While watching the movies, I said to myself, "I would love to play a game set in this world." It was SO visually arresting to me.
I've never been a huge fan of survival games, however, so I am extremely hesitant to get too hyped for this. Seeing gameplay, though, gave me some distinct Mass Effect vibes. And previews were saying a lot of the mundanity of the traditional survival gameplay loop has been buffed out or removed.
I'm hoping it hits the sweet spot where I can really get into it. I think it looks amazing.
Why is the main character wearing a syrup?
Looks a bit like the guy who runs the local kebab van...
Faithful adaptation is a stretch and a half. Looks a bit floaty to me.
New Dune game - amazing!
It's an MMO - bleurgh.
It's an MMO survival game - double bleurgh.
This feels like Conan all over again, which was also made by Funcom. With some friends it's okay (sort of..) but as a whole it's janky and barely performs on console. They quickly prioritized PC and only focused on console when it was time to port another DLC (of which there are many, and they are not cheap - they used to say it was to keep the servers going) It's a shame too because Conan had so much potential, and I have some great memories of absolute janky mayhem between friends, but if you respect your wallet make sure you wait to see how it performs on console before putting any money down.
A lot of console players got stung by Funcom already. Their idea of a massive open world is usually a lot of sand or forests with nothing there, no points of interest, a handful of dungeons, with the emphasis on the players to build the world through base building and raiding. I love base building in survival games but Funcom take the emptiness too far.
This works on games like DayZ (one of my favorites) Ark and even Rust but they have established communities and dedicated modding teams, which we don't always get on console (Ark supports mods now) I've already seen what Funcom can do with sand, I hope they didn't acquire the Dune IP for that reason.
MMO is a MM-No.
That's all I had to say but Push Square insist I say more.
$50 for a multiplayer survival game is just not something I could stomach. The likelihood that this flops seems pretty high.
