Not for the first time, author George R. R. Martin has teased the possibility of Elden Ring coming to the big screen.
Known for fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin famously made contributions to the lore of FromSoftware's beloved open world RPG.
Speaking to IGN, he stated there's "some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring".
However, because of his ongoing work on his aforementioned novels, Martin isn't sure he can commit to a potential film. "We'll see if [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he told IGN. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book [The Winds of Winter], so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
As mentioned, this is now the second time Martin has publicly mentioned a possible Elden Ring adaptation. Back in July 2024, he teased an Elden Ring film or TV series on his blog.
Before that, FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki commented that he's open to the idea of an Elden Ring movie, but that it'd need to be made with a "very strong partner".
So, it sounds like conversations about an Elden Ring flick continue to be had. It feels like it has potential, and there have been some solid video game films in the last few years, so perhaps now is the time to make it happen.
Would you like to watch an Elden Ring movie, or should it remain a game only? Tell us in the comments section below.

You enter the cinema, sit down in your seat, get comfortable. The lights dim, darkness everywhere. A sudden flash of light. On the black screen the words appear — "You died". Credits, tears, applause.
I think this could work as a super abstract Arthaus Film like the green knight.
"I'm a few years behind with my latest book" - just a bit of an understatement... 9 years and counting George.
I get that Elden Ring is a huge property and a hugely successful video game, but a movie would be just plain stupid. While people enjoy combing through the obscure lore, I don't find any of it particularly cinematic. It's like trying to make a movie about the Silmarillion.
@Tomato_Goose ”You died.”
That’s pretty good. I was imagining a silent movie in B&W w/ all the dialogue screens saying thing like “Dog” and “But hole”. 😂
Ok what is the deal w/ the mthrfkn take over the screen ads in this place? I don’t mind the ads on the top, bottom and sides, gotta pay the bills, but when it takes me 5 minutes to type one comment b/c the reply box keeps getting an add placed over it that’s freaking ridiculous. Second time this has happened to me, total BS.🤬
@themightyant
I was just going to ask this. I have never read any of the books, but a work colleague got really worked up a few years back about how behind he was with his writing.
In fact, I think the comment was something like "we are probably not going to know how the story ends as at this rate he will be dead of old age before he finishes it!" (Obviously considering he said that his books may end differently to the TV series).
GRRM needs to focus on getting Winds of Winter out....
@Oram77 I gave up the ghost years ago!
“ongoing work on his aforementioned novels”
Yeah sure.
@rjejr
"Try finger but hole" will be written all over the place, and it will be an 'easter egg' challenge to count how many times you can spot it!
Please, George, just finish Winds of Winter.
Signed, a foolish believer.
I've been reading every book and novel from the Soul's series for years now, including the brilliant 'You Died', and still don't understand what's going on. The same for Elden Ring. If they can translate any of the true meaning into a movie then more power to them. I'd still love to see an Elden Ring or Souls Anime movie, like what they did for Dante's Inferno and Dead Space. Borderlands is still too fresh in my memory to trust Hollywood to handle my favorite franchise with the respect it deserves.
Absolutely not suited to a movie. Souls plots are meant to be explained to you via a Wiki and not through any sort of actual plot device.
I have a feeling it would be a movie that would make no sense at all lol, but it would have cool scenes.
@themightyant Sadly way more than 9 years.....
I hope he does get them done, keep plugging away George.
@TheMysticOne 9 years since he said he was hoping it would be published initially (2016)
Animated series maybe, movie no.
@Rich33 That could work. 😂
I'm sure people who are still waiting for the last 2 "A song of ice and fire" are thrilled to see him doing everything but working on it.
@themightyant He himself said in 2012 he expected it to be published in 2014.
adriasnews.com has one article with the quote
"I've already written 400 pages of my sixth book and I really look forward to publishing it in 2014, but I am really bad for predictions.”
Easy enough to check up on.
@TheMysticOne Eeesh! It's even worse than I feared. I read Dance of Dragons in 2011 right as Season 1 of Game of Thrones was on TV, and started the series way back around 1997... so it's been a crazy long wait.
Almost as long as Kingkiller Chronicle book 3, Door's of Stone, the second book The Wise Man's Fear came out a few months prior to that also in 2011.
One day... perhaps... there will be a time when Kingkiller Chronicle is completed, Ninjai returns, Beserk anime is finished etc. lol
@themightyant it's bad isn't it, i've also been waiting 15 years for JV Jones to get over her writers block
Keep our fingers crossed, hopefully we don't have a wheel of time situation and george finds his mojo.
@TheMysticOne I thought Brandon Sanderson did a fantastic job finishing WoT, not just in speed, but also in tone, he really channelled Jordan and managed to tie off most of the dozens of threads well. Though I didn't love WoT as much as some do, it was FAR too long, glacially paced, and lost it's way often. (I still liked it, just didn't love it)
Thankfully didn't get on Swords of Shadow. But GRRM and Pat Rothfuss have had a negative impact on my buying habits, they've made me far more likely to wait for a series to finish than pick it up early. It's a dangerous precedent, if everyone did it, or I abided by this the whole time, many series would never get off the ground.
