Update #12 []: As compensation for the PSN outage, which resulted in both the PS5 and PS4 being unable to play online for almost 24 hours, Sony has pledged five days of free PS Plus service for all members affected.

Update #11 []: The PlayStation Network is finally back up and running. Well, mostly.

The all-important, official PSN Service Status page now says that the network is fully functional — hurrah! — but there are still numerous user reports coming in about being booted from various online games, and dropping connections when using online PS5 and PS4 features.

It sounds like the network's simply taking a bit of time to straighten itself out. After all, hundreds of thousands of users will have hopped back online within the last few hours — and that's going to put some real strain on Sony's servers.

We still don't know why the PSN went down in the first place — for a whole 20-ish hours, we should reiterate — but we're hopefully past the worst of it.

It'll be interesting to see whether Sony provides more information regarding the outage in the days to come. If it does, we'll be sure to bring you coverage.

Update #10 []: The PSN is finally starting to blink back into life, as reports of successful connection tests and login attempts flood social media.

Assuming this is the end of the outage, the whole thing lasted roughly 20 uninterrupted hours, stretching from 11pm GMT on the 7th February 2025 until 20:30pm GMT on the 8th February 2025.

Sony has not issued a statement on the downtime, and we still don't know what the actual cause was.

Update #9 []: It's now been close to 20 hours since the PlayStation Network first went down. And, as has been the case all day long, we're still waiting on official communication from Sony (outside of standard social media acknowledgements of the ongoing issues).

Interestingly, though, PSN connectivity seems to be in flux at the time of writing. Some users have actually managed to join online games, while others are sending messages and downloading titles from their library with no problems.

It's all a bit up and down, then, but make no mistake — the vast majority of PS5 and PS4 users are still running into the dreaded WS-116449-5 error code.

We're not too far away from the 24 hour mark, and that's when serious questions will need to be asked.

Update #8 []: There's now fairly widespread evidence that some PS5 and PS4 users are able access certain online features, such as their friends list and parts of the PlayStation Store. Other users are reporting that they're able to download games from their library.

However, it looks like most people are still being hit with the WS-116449-5 error code whenever they try to access anything connected to the PSN, and online games remain unplayable.

Still, these reports may suggest that the network is slowly starting to recover — but we wouldn't recommend getting your hopes up just yet.

Sony still hasn't released an official statement on the outage.

Update #7 []: PSN has been down for close to 15 hours now, and with parts of North America beginning to wake up again, we're starting to see frustrations boil over on social media.

Many users are calling for compensation, while others are beginning to fear that this is some kind of major cyber attack on Sony's service.

To be clear, there's no concrete evidence of this just yet — but PlayStation's continued silence certainly isn't helping matters.

A huge corporation like Sony won't provide any public-facing information until it's absolutely sure about what's going on — and even then, it'll have to carefully consider its options with regards to public relations.

It isn't what any of us want to hear, but we'll just have to wait and see how long this outage lasts. If PlayStation does decide to speak up, or if there are any other developments, we'll update this article again.

Update #6 []: We're now fast approaching 12 hours of total PSN downtime, with users still running into the WS-116449-5 error code (which basically just means that your console can't establish a network connection).

Outside of standard acknowledgements on social media, PlayStation is yet to release any kind of additional information on the outage.

In the last couple of hours, there were reports that parts of the network, such as messaging and game verification, had been restored — but it's still abundantly clear that most users can't sign in or do anything that's tied to having an internet connection.

Meanwhile, the official PSN Service Status page remains coated in red, meaning that the entire network is offline.

Of course, we're now close to midday here in Europe, and so frustration will only continue to balloon if this outage isn't addressed.

Update #5 []: PSN has been down and offline for over six hours now.

Asian territories have spent a large chunk of their day with no way to log in or use any online features on PS5 and PS4. Meanwhile, Europe is just starting to wake up — and we're sure that everyone will be so pleased to see that the outage is still going on.

PlayStation's main social media accounts — in English, at least — are yet to comment on the situation, as information remains frustratingly scarce. Hopefully we get an update from PlayStation's European arm within the next few hours.

Update #4 []: Ask PlayStation, the company's English-speaking social media support service, has finally acknowledged the ongoing PSN outage.

It writes: "We are aware some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN," and includes a link to the PSN Service Status page — which still shows every part of the network as "experiencing issues".

Needless to say, the response to these social media posts has not been positive. From what we've seen, saying that "some" users are having trouble is a gross underestimation. Again, this appears to be an incredibly widespread outage that may well be impacting the entire PSN, and therefore every PS5 and PS4 user.

Should it continue for much longer, we'd expect PlayStation to release an official statement.

Update #3 []: PlayStation Japan has commented on the PSN outage, stating that the company is now looking into the issue. It also thanks users for their patience as it works to resolve the problem.

We don't yet know what that problem is, however. It's been a long, long time since there was a PSN outage of this magnitude, and even though the network's only been down for a couple of hours, fresh reports are still constant.

We're in the very early hours of the morning here in Europe, so we likely won't hear anything from PlayStation's European channels any time soon.

In the meantime, we'll update this article again if PlayStation US breaks its silence.

Update #2 []: The PlayStation Network has now been down and offline — in its entirety, as far as we can tell — for over an hour.

PlayStation is yet to comment on the outage across any of its social media channels.

Update #1 []: The PlayStation Service Status page has now updated, and shows that every part of the PlayStation Network is experiencing issues. It's been roughly 45 minutes since the outage began.

PlayStation itself is yet to make a statement on the downtime via social media — but that'll obviously have to change if this keeps up.

Again, this appears to be an incredibly widespread outage, with reports seemingly growing by the minute.

Original Story: The PlayStation Network is currently down and out for what seems to be most — if not all — PS5 and PS4 players.

Reports started coming in around 20 minutes ago, and the outage only seems to have become more widespread since. From what we can tell, this is total downtime; users can't sign in, access any network-based content, or play online.

Strangely, the official PSN Service Status page says that there are no issues at the time of writing. Clearly that's not the case, so we'll need to wait and see whether that page gets updated.

We'll also update this story as soon as we know more.

For what it's worth, major PSN problems have been practically nonexistent for years now. Small outages have come and gone at times, but Sony usually sorts out any issues very quickly. Hopefully that'll be the case here as well.
