Elden Ring Nightreign is creeping ever closer, expected to release on PS5 and PS4 in 2025. The sped-up pace of play will mean significant changes from the traditional FromSoft formula, and you'd better believe that Hidetaka Miyazaki's obsession with horrific, soul-sucking swamps will continue, despite the spinoff being directed by one of his hand-picked acolytes, Junya Ishizaki.
Speaking to PC Gamer ahead of magazine issue 405 (thanks, GamesRadar+), Ishizaki revealed that players can expect "large-scale changes to terrain in the form of procedurally appearing volcanoes, swamps, or forests." The director, whose career progressed from map designer on the original Dark Souls to game designer on Bloodborne, to lead game designer on Dark Souls III, then lead battle designer on Elden Ring, explains his ethos for the multiplayer outing and how a particular session might go:
"We wanted the map itself to be a giant dungeon, so players have the chance to traverse and explore a different way every time they play. You must choose the boss you want to face at the end of the third day. Once you've made that choice, maybe you have an idea of how you want to strategize against that boss, which might change how you approach the map. We wanted to offer players that agency to decide, 'I need to go after a poison weapon this time to face this boss'".

The best thing I like about this spinoff, is that Miyazaki is not directing it, and he's available to work in parallel on another project.
Definitely liking the sound of it more and more, glad I'll be able to play the network test once it starts so I can get a feel for it.
@Shinnok789 Agreed, it's nice he's not wasting his time on a spin off instead of a new title.
I'm still gutted 2 player co-op isn't in it. Surely more people want 2 player than 3?
Looking forward to trying this when it comes to the network test, not sure if I'll bite on the full game yet. Love ER but roguelikes & multiplayer games are very hit and miss for me.
Hmmmm, didnt realise the director was the map designer for Dark Souls. To date that is my favourite designed world in these games. Still, I shall wait until reviews as I've had a mixed history with rogue lites/likes and games designed with co-op play at the forefront.
If I'm being totally honest, I just have no hype for this game. I've put well over 600 hours into my collective Soulsborne games, including at least 300 in Elden Ring, but something about this one just doesn't excite me. I think it's too soon and visually too similar to the main Elden Ring experience.
I hope it's great, but it's definitely not a day one for me.
