FromSoftware and Bandai Namco's attempt to make Elden Ring battle royale a thing, Nightreign, will feature fearsome enemies and bosses from across the Dark Souls series, arriving in the multiverse-like realm of Limveld. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to note the inclusion of some familiar foes in the reveal trailer, which the developers have since confirmed.
As anyone who has been pummeled repeatedly by him can attest, the outline of Dark Souls III's infamous The Nameless King can clearly be seen in the footage shown. Before you cry asset flip, game director Junya Ishizaki has reassured Famitsu (thanks, IGN) that these appearances will be minimal.
Ishizaki said these enemies represent creatures who have strayed into Elden Ring from other universes, implying further that the various FromSoftware IPs may have more in common than simply an NPC named Patches. IGN notes that, theoretically, this opens the door to Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice cameos, too; we'd add that the way Nightreign's various character classes appear to ape gameplay from those games is especially intriguing.
What do you think? Is FromSoftware recycling its back catalogue of bosses in the Elden Ring exciting or disappointing? Let us know endlessly in the comments section below.

A bit surprised how ok everyone is about these uncharacteristic creative liberties they now take with lore, something that has always been treated as a sacred aspect of these games. I remember Miyazaki saying that he is starting to step away from things to give the new blood an opportunity to make something new with the formula. If that's it, then I'm afraid the future truly is Dark for this one.
@NeonTiger Nothing lasts forever. While Miyazaki is still making games, I'm excited to get an Elden ring roguelite with the possibility of facing any souls boss with an Elden ring randomized build. The part of me that enjoys the mechanics of from soft games, this sounds awesome.
Personally not a huge fan of the lore implications of it. Id rather them just say they're non-canon cameos purely there for fun lol
@NeonTiger If any other studio did it it would piss people off. Heck people complained about Astro Bots cameos for being too much of an advertisment.
It feels like a grand homage to a series that has captivated me for countless hours over the years.
I should have more interest in this than I actually do. Elden Ring is probably top 5 all time for me but I still haven’t even got Erdtree cause it’s expensive.
If it were any other dev, recycling bosses would have generated a lot of drama of social media.
But since it's From Software, this is "intriguing", and welcomed, innit?
Shoot……if we don’t get a Bloodborne boss in the game I will be highly disappointed 🤣
@NeonTiger too be fair this doesn't look like canon lore, so they may as well get wild with it.
@Shinnok789 there is a lot of negativity towards this and from software in general, usually underserved as with most negativity against most Devs these days.
Personally I see no problem with stuff like this, hell I champion having more 'asset flip' games like Majora's mask and New Vegas.
People seem to find fault with everything these days. From Soft's catalogue of bosses is arguably the greatest in the history of our medium, the idea of a game giving us a greatest hits compilation sounds fantastic.
There was a time when such ideas would be celebrated by gamers. Can we please go back?
Right well lets put down our favourite Soulslike (FROM Software only) boss that we'd like to revisit in Elden Ring: Nightreign.
I'll get the ball rolling, I've always had a soft spot for
Great Grey Wolf Sif
What's your choice?
@NeonTiger This type of game is not about lore, it is clear that FromSoft is capitalizing on their IP and giving people what thousands of YouTubers and twitch streamers are giving, a fun randomizer coop experience in the world of ER. I don't think the criticism of lore in this kind of game is valid since it is not a main entry with a campaign like the other games. I expect the next mainline game to have the kind of lore you're talking about for sure.
@NeonTiger there's nothing about Nightreign that goes against established lore for Dark Souls or Elden Ring... Dark Souls 3 established that worlds and time could converge and meld. The Lands Between are just that a land between other places, nothing is certain beyond the sea surround those lands riddled by the touch of the Outer Gods, similar beings hold Yharnam in their clutches... The fun thing about the Soulsborne lore is that it is mutable.
@NeonTiger I'm hoping it does have a story reason and it's not just because. I'm hoping it's something like the veil between worlds is slipping and the world's are bleeding in to one another. We fix it and they're all tucked back in bed by the end of the game.
@Mintie yeah right, I've read that justification before and I'm just not into such an idea. At this point I'm not even sure which would be worse, them straight up shoving DS and other games inside ER lore (for reasons unknown), or just plain not caring about the lore ramifications in service of creating a game they wanted to create.
@NeonTiger Not really a justification if the mechanisms are in the games' narrative
The alternative is that Nightreign will be a fun game that mixes a whole bunch of bosses and mechanics and it doesn't really matter how The Nameless King ended up in some multiversal version of Limgrave.
If it's really bothering you that much it might be time to go get a Greggs steakbake and sit on a park bench for a bit.
@NeonTiger Think you're exaggerating a little bit there. This doesn't have the affect the 'sacred' lore one bit. It can be non-canon or a multiverse thing or whatever. Which is what i think it is. People losing their minds over a big nothing as usual.
There are zero lore ramifications
But why are we calling it a Battle Royale? It's a 3 player coop game, yes, with a shrinking arena, but... there's no pvp, as far as I'm aware, so it sounds like a bit of a misnomer to call it such?
It's a battle royale (-esque) co-op action game with the aesthetic and gameplay trappings of Elden Ring. I'm not sure how a lore-based explanation for any of this is necessary.
You play in a randomized world every time. It clearly has nothing to do with any existing storyline, and if it did, the one-word answer to your lore questions would apparently be "Multiverse."
FromSoft could have avoided most of these questions if they had called this Nightreign: A Co-op Action Title Which Has No Connection to Previously Established Lore, but unfortunately it doesn't really roll off the tongue, not to mention the obvious benefits to tying this into the Elden Ring brand since they've sold approximately three trillion copies of that game to date.
