Tides of Annihilation

Tides of Annihilation might have been the biggest genuine PlayStation surprise of Sony's recent State of Play, and according to our own essential Push Square polling, it has since proved to be its most popular. New details have emerged, and the promising new IP from developer Eclipse Glow Games, based in Chengdu, China, has us eagerly anticipating its likely 2026 release.

A fascinating blend of modern elements and classic Arthurian myth, players inhabit the armoured boots of Gwendolyn, the sole survivor of an Outworld invasion, who can call upon the fearsome might of the legendary Knights of the Round Table in battle. Outlet Wccftech participated in a roundtable Q&A with the developers back at Gamescom 2024 and managed to sit on some juicy info for all this time.

Eclipse Glow confirmed that there will be four different weapons for players to master and reiterated that combat is "definitely more like Devil May Cry", which should comfort those starting to get over every other game pulling from FromSoftware's Soulslike formula. We know of at least three implements of destruction: bows, fists, and swords. Eclipse's representative said: "Sorry, I forgot the fourth one!"

Further, players can look forward to more than 30 hours of gameplay for the average playthrough, and on the essential subject of boss encounters, there are "over 30, each with their own abilities".

Finally, in a fascinating aside (at least, we think so), it appears that Tides of Annihilation is an explicit attempt to capture the hearts and minds of Western gamers by Chinese mega-publisher Tencent; this is phase two, having already successfully served Eastern audiences with the hugely popular Black Myth: Wukong. Asked why such an explicitly Western setting was chosen, Eclipse Glow said to Wccftech:

"Here's some context. This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects invested in by Tencent, and there were different expectations set for these two projects. Black Myth: Wukong targeted the Chinese market, but for this project, we targeted a Western audience, so we chose the Arthurian legends. This project originated when the producer came up with the concept surrounding knights, and then we connected with the Knights of the Round Table from Arthurian myths. The reason we reached out to you guys at this early stage is that the target audience is Western, and this is our first title. So we want to, you know, gather as much feedback as we can to improve the game for the final version."
