While Sony may have expected its first-party announcements to be the biggest hitters of last week's State of Play event, it's the new Chinese RPG Tides of Annihilation that's turned out to be the PS5 title attracting the most attention. A debut effort from Eclipse Glow Games, the intriguing setting combined with some impressive gameplay has helped the title to a place on many wishlists following the livestream.
Its instant popularity was enough to see it prove the most picked choice in a Push Square Poll we conducted over the weekend, earning more votes than any other PS5 game part of the show. Of over 4,600 votes, it garnered more than 13 per cent of the overall share, which translates into 621 votes — at the time of writing. Its closest competitor is Saros with 533 votes, meaning Tides of Annihilation managed to beat out a PlayStation Studios title in its own backyard.
The game is also doing bits on YouTube, where the reveal trailer on the PlayStation YouTube channel is just shy of one million views, whereas the 11-minute gameplay clip has more than 1.2 million views across its PlayStation upload and another from IGN.
Tides of Annihilation takes place in the ruins of the English capital city, London. The setup is: "Taking on the role of Gwendolyn, humanity’s lone survivor, players embark on a legendary quest through London’s iconic environs to unravel a mystery that will determine the fate of reality itself. Battling alongside summonable spectral knights, players will encounter hordes of enemies, unforgettable bosses, and vertical levels in the form of gigantic knights roaming the landscape."
The game doesn't have a confirmed PS5 release date yet. Are you a PS5 owner excited for Tides of Annihilation? Let us know in the comments below.

Hot women + good combat + slick graphics = people are interested..... who would of thunk.
I wasn't amazed by that trailer shown during the State of Play, but the 11-minute slice of gameplay they released the day after looked fun as hell. It looks mighty promising.
@Oram77 I was gonna make a comment as to why it's doing so well, however, you summed it up in 2 sentences.
I saw the gameplay trailer they dropped after the reveal. The reveal trailer was alot more entertaining to watch
Please let there be a "mute protagonist" button. One of my modern gaming peeves.
It's certainly graphically impressive. I'm not sure what it was about the gameplay trailer, but it didn't look particularly engaging. It could just be that the player never got hit or it could be because I couldn't really feel the impact of the attacks and something about the physics of jumping felt off. It's pretty hard to judge feel from a trailer though, so I'll hope it'll feel better when I give it a go. That'll depend on the voice being improved / mutable / available in other languages.
Really impressed with what I saw graphics and gameplay wise. Cant wait to see more
I think it looks okay, but in the way I thought Stellar Blade was "okay", as in it perhaps takes a little too much inspiration from its piers without doing anything particularly exciting of its own. Case with this being DMC. I'm not loving the vague fantasy setting; also being a Brit, the voice-work is grating for me. But the combat does look fun.
Hopefully there's a demo on the horizon so I can test it out for myself.
My absolute favourite game. It also shows that a female character can be attractive without looking ridiculous at the same time.
I bet if we’d seen some gameplay for Saros it would have edged it out! Housemarque for the win!
Personally, I consider Returnal to be the best PS studios release so far this generation.. So I'm definitely most hyped for Saros, but Tides of Annihilation looks interesting as well, and it's got broader mass appeal.
Tiddies of Annihilation ftw
@Oram77 The next Final Fantasy needs a female lead then.
I was very, very impressed with this and Saros!
So much hype/success for original games coming from Poland - eastwards these days. Hmm. I wonder why that is 🤔
Edit: just to clarify, I don't mean the often repeated point of having attractive characters. I mean the fact that they offer characters and stories that are outside of the homogeneous and ham-fisted wave of social culture that is often repeated in Western games.
@MrPeanutbutterz just because the lead character is female doesn't mean you have the right to mute her!
The gameplay shown afterward got me interested. Reminded me of Forspoken a lot, honestly, which, given that game’s reputation, I’m surprised by how much people are excited for this one. But, hey, I really liked Forspoken, so I’m happy to see more games that bear some similarities!
I dunno, I’m more than burned out by third-person melee action games, that seems to be all they’re making these days without an actual Devil May Cry to show the imitators how it’s done. Elements of the trailer looked incredibly AI generated too (I literally worked as a model trainer so I do know what I’m talking about), it’s more likely that it’s been used in the design process to generate scenarios than any generated art has remained in the game.
There were 3 similar looking trailers in the SoP, this and 2 others, that looked like Elden Ring dlc to me. 1 of them I do believe was Lies of Pi dlc, the other had a name I can’t recall. I’m not sure I like the look. A little too brown, a little too 4k, a little too dark, a little too overused. But playing is different than looking at, and I did like Stellar Blade, so keeping an eye on them. Really not much else for me to be keeping an eye on anyway.
This reception vs Intergalactic
Visual and combat wise it got a decent check from me. The voice over threw me off, like WAY off. I'll have to see if that's something I can look past or not, or if it will just be better in the finished product.
I'm very much looking forward to Tides not just because of the gameplay but the character designs as well. One of my friends even called it a British NieR game and I can see where he comes from.
@UltimateOtaku91 I would take another Luna (FFX) or Lightning as the MC for sure.
@Veritas7Ax The voice actress also played Shadowheart in Balder's Gate 3.
To echo an earlier comment, it looked really similar to Forspoken to me
Hey, it's another "female protagonist fights things in a post apocalyptic world with a piece of metal" game. It looks cool. I'm looking forward to the reviews.
It don't know why its surprising. Sometimes all you need to be is a well executed "one of those". Regardless of what those happen to be.
This is very much a good looking one of those. So fans of those will of course be curious and optimistic after a good showing.
Like if a really sick farming sim got shown the farm game community would be into it. When a top tier looking fighting game is revealed its all the fighting game fans talk about for a month.
This looks like a well made character action game. That's all it takes sometimes. Especially in a world where Platinum is maybe on life support.
@nessisonett burned out?? Are you telling there's many more of these games that I don't know a about?!!? Lol
@nessisonett If you got burned out by character action games which in the last 5 years there's only a few of them then you must be super burnout with RPG, shooters, metroidvania, and open world.
@Oram77 and a unique world building that stands out.
Couldn't have said it better.
2025 is the year the hack and slash makes a come back!
Let the gooning commence
It's not completely Stellar Blade but it's very Valkyrie Elysium or Bayonetta to me. I like it. The building on the side was very Bayonetta 1, some parts looked like Darksiders 1 to me then Darksiders 3.
Also King Arthur like (I guess) hmm. It's no Fate series is it and good enough of it's own approach to King Arthur compared to mythologies or Angels/Demons or other things for an action game.
I just hope it doesn't have the DMC5/Bayonetta 3 2 character problem with it's controls. I really hated those characters that offered that. DMC5 with V I liked the idea but it just didn't play well it was horrible and confusing. I can take confusing but it just didn't work right, 3 characters and not well defined use on the controller. Bayonetta 3 just as bad.
Astral Chain or Bayonetta Origins did different approaches to it and I prefer them being 2 separate characters (like Brothers Tale of Two Sons did or just well 1 analogue stick/buttons each Joycons even though it's a 1 player game so it worked nicely) or better balanced controls in a state for it like Astral Chain did of mode state.
So how Astral Chain did it first and Bayonetta 3 just ruined it with it's changes to the format is beyond me.
Souls clones are nice (not my thing) but a good character action/hack n slash, yes please I'd like one.
Tides has the presentation, level design and abilities I think works for it.
This did catch my eye, and not just because of the protagonist. I liked the setting and the overall feel of the game. Very FFXVI with the summons of the Knights. Although I didn’t play it I can see the Forspoken comparisons. I’ll have to see though, because I liked the Stellar Blade promos and then when I played the demo I didn’t like how it felt to play.
There's a market for more pure action games as this and Lost Soul Aside are proving. Not everybody wants games that borrow heavily from or straight up copy Souls.

@neveragain2025 enjoy the ban 😉
The VO's are pretty poor for this. The English accents are just awful, awkward and far too over-exaggerated to the point that it is forced. They should have consulted about this.
