It seems it hasn't been exactly smooth sailing up the River Styx for Amazon's proposed TV adaptation of Sony's God of War IP, which was recently scrapped, starting over from scratch. Nevertheless, the colossal company remains (Cretan) bullish on the project and has already ordered two seasons, sight unseen.
That's according to renowned writer, producer, and now God of War showrunner Ronald D. Moore, who's in charge of adapting the series for the small screen. Moore recently made the revelations on the Sackhoff Show with Katee Sackhoff (thanks, GamesRadar+), telling our beloved Starbuck:
"Right now, I'm working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they asked me to come in. I'm literally in the writer's room, and that's my new thing."
Apparently, Moore, whose experience with video games is largely limited to arcades in the 80s, has been having a tough time playing the God of War games, which we suppose isn't necessary to adapt the tale they tell. We were then gifted the best quote we'd seen all day:
"The controllers now…Press R1; which one's R1? Oh, I'm dead! I can't quite get a hold of that."
What do you think of Amazon doubling down on God of War? Buckle up, boy, and prepare for a titanic amount of Kratos in the years to come in the comments section below.

Please leave it alone Amazon
I can't see God of War working well as a TV show, personally...
One way to make a good adaptation is to have someone running it who has never played the game. What are they thinking??
Ronald D Moore of Star Trek fame!! Least they have some experience behind this.
My hope for Ronald is that he gets hooked and becomes and avid gamer.
@Keyblade-Dan They have Reacher, Invincible, Bosch, Fallout. Those are all excellent shows. Even Wheel of Time seems to have a pretty dedicated fan base. On top of that Playstation Productions has been pretty successful so far.
The only mixed/bad show they have is RoP.
They could do a good job. Casting and budget will be key.
It could be great but who could possibly play Kratos
Ron Moore is the best of the best. I would literally watch anything he was involved in(Yeah, I even watched some episodes of outlander)
Guys, I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'm expecting Rings of Power levels of IP destruction. Hopefully I'm surprised.
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr The problem with Rings of Power isn’t faithfulness to the books, it’s that it bored me to tears. There’s no pleasing Tolkien ‘fans’ and the changes Peter Jackson made would have caused death threats if those movies came out today. The Hobbit was even more egregious but those movies still came out too soon for the chuds to attack.
This could be be superb, incredibly hammy and terrible or incredibly hammy and wonderful - I’m intrigued, they just need to get Kratos right and the CGI
I never see any show under the showrunner name. But i hope he learn the source material carefully and don't messed up. I mean, the last thing GoW needs is the franchise got destroyed by a crappy tv show. I don't want GoW ended up like Halo.
@PuppetMaster you’ve honestly never seen Battlestar Galactica?? I guess it’s been a good few years now…
@ChrisDeku you'd be surprised how many haven't actually seen it, it's criminal 😳
This is going to be terrible, and we'll just have to accept it. People just don't seem able (generally speaking) to do video game adaptations well. Or, it's always the wrong people getting to call the shots, who have no implicit understanding or experience with the source material. Truly baffling.
"I'm literally in the writer's room, and that's my new thing."... not necessarily wrong or egregious use of "literally", but what else would you be? I sure hope his diction isn't a taste of the dialogue GoW is receiving.
Also, I know being a gamer isn't a prerequisite to write a decent gaming adaptation, but if you're going to talk like some frat girl, at least update your knowledge beyond donkey Kong.
Tbh after the last two games I’m fed up with god of war now really didn’t like them at all.
@Oram77 I am struggling to as well. Hope to be proven wrong though.
@ChrisDeku I heard the name a couple of times but i never watch it.
Can't see this working no matter which streaming platform it's on. It's just too 'video gamey' (that's a good thing and where it belongs). I'd argue Ragnarok was the least GOW like game in that it was less bombastic with with all the narrative and exploration stuff - a natural evolution perhaps but it caused me to jump to other games occasionally which is unusual when I'm really immersed in a title.
@nessisonett sigh. It's truly horrifying/pathetic what technology has done to all corners of society.
@PuppetMaster it's top shelf space TV! My top two are Battlestar Galactica and The Expanse. Both on Amazon Prime.
@16BitHero I see 🤔
I only watched a few american tv shows back in early-mid 2000s. Outside Smallville, Supernatural, Buffy, Avatar, The Simpsons, Friends, and Spongebob, my knowledge about american tv show are pretty thin. But now i'm interested to check Battlestar Galactica.
@PuppetMaster it's of that era so hopefully you enjoy it. It's filmed in Canada and most of the cast are Canadian with some American and British actors scattered in there too.
Since he mentioned Boy and R1 I'm guessing he's doing the 2018 game and not the original 5. Seems a weird place to start but I guess he's going for that Sony father thing, whatever it is.
Not sure about this one. It's certainly not going to make any fans of the game happy. Kratos is not going to be climbing by throwing his blades of chaos across 3 to 4 different walls to move around.😂
"See" on Apple TV was surprisingly good for a TV show where 99% of people are blind. I'm still not sure how they pulled that one off. Third season wasn't great but season 2 ended well enough.
If he's only writing it now season 1 won't be out for awhile yet, and it will only feel like a half a season anyway, which is probably why Amazon ordered 2 to finish the story, so that won't be out until 2030 at least, so I can't really care.🤷♂️
Athennnnnaaaaaaaa. In my Kratos voice 😃.haha.word up son
Advice for that writter:
1) Don't worry, I still mix up L1, L2, R1 and R2 after 20 years on controller.
2) Forget about GoW 4 Ascension, GoW 5 and GoW 6 Ragnarok and focus ONLY on GoW 1,2,3!!!
@nessisonett my main gripe with the hobbit trilogy and RoP is it became to "marvelized" with all the CGI. Compared to the practical effects and art of the lotr trilogy, they just seemed like a super hero movie/show. Everything has to be a cash cow now, so no surprise its lost substance. But that's just my opinion, could be nostalgia too, I was a kid when the first trilogy came and loved em!
this is going to suck
