Chrono Trigger is widely considered to be one of the greatest Japanese RPGs ever made, and the stone cold classic just turned 30 years old.
The most insane part, though? Chrono Trigger has never been remastered or even re-released on modern PlayStation consoles, despite being an absolute all-timer.
But this three-decade anniversary has sparked some semblance of hope amongst fans. Square Enix says that it has "a variety of projects" planned for the big three-oh — although the publisher's phrasing is rather vague at best.
As translated by Gematsu, the statement reads: "We are planning a variety of projects over the next year that will go beyond the world of the game. Please look forward to the latest information." Unfortunately, we'll just have to wait and see what Square Enix is cooking.
Chrono Trigger first launched for the SNES on the 11th March 1995 in Japan. Almost five years later, it was ported to the PS1 in November 1999. However, the PlayStation version was never officially released in Europe until 2009 — close a whole decade later — thanks to a worldwide Nintendo DS port.
Since then, the genre-defining title has been slapped on iOS, Android, and PC — but we're still waiting for that modern console edition...

Praying to who? Lol. I appreciate the gents who run pushsquare.com on the other side of the pond. Everyone of you from Talby on give me a different perspective on the pulse of gaming. Chrono Trigger should be preserved. I'll glady take a nice HD coat to play on my 5 or series (or just a damn port, I know there are too many hands and license issues...or so ive read). But I'd never, ever consider SE touching the core experience in any way. It's the pinnacle of gaming. The unicorn if you will. Just keep it alive on ANY current platform.
All I really need is a way to play the original version on modern hardware. HD2D or anything else is a bonus.
I think we're just going to get merch though.
Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s hard to say what the best JRPG of all time is, but it’s easy to say that Chrono Trigger is in the conversation.
Odd that they remastered Chrono Cross for modern consoles but not Chrono Trigger.
Honestly, as much as I want to see a remaster (NO remake or alterations!) of this game, a 2DHD port would make it look worse than the original. Especially after seeing what it did to Star Ocean 2 as a reference. There are some games that can benefit from it, but Chrono Trigger is not one of them. Instead personally, I would love to see it cleaned up and smoothed out. More finer details into the characters and backgrounds.
Not a fan of the HD 2D things at all. Pixel art and blurry camera focus and 3D effects just clash too much together in my taste.
So I would prefer a clean remaster. No smoothing filters like the iOS version etc.
But that is unrealistic. If we get anything, than it will be a HD 2D remaster. Especially after the success of Dragon Quest 3.
I doubt there will be a remaster for PS4/5.
Anyway. This game is on my backlog and i need to finish it. I own the PS1 classic version and i really enjoyed playing it on my Vita.
But i'm not sure why i stop playing after i got all party and need to revisit some timeline in order to get the best weapons. sigh...sometimes i really hate this bad habbit of not continue the game until finished.
Or they could just play an original copy? Or that sacrilege in today's please remaster the game I finished 10 minutes ago culture we live in?
Maybe in the minority here but I prefer Chrono Cross but I can never deny the importance of Trigger.
I played this recently for the first time on Steam Deck and it's fantastic. Really holds up and I didn't have nostalgia factor.
Really do not want a full remake of Chrono Trigger. 2D-HD maybe....
Give me a Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remastered version of Chrono Trigger. Options to use an orchestrated score. Original pixel graphics. Throw in the cutscenes from the PSX and DS version. Trophies. What else would you need?
Would make sense since Square Enix was asking how fans wanted them to remake Chrono Trigger last year
I thought it was a good game, but the only thing I remember was the horendus battle load times because I played in on the PS1 Final Fantasy Chronicles version. I would love to play this again though.
All I want is a 2.5D HD Remake of this game and I'm happy. Chrono Trigger and FFVII were the games that got me into JRPGs when I was seven years old. Still have many fond memories of CT.
If we could somehow have remasters of Chrono Trigger and Lost Odyssey (yes, I know it was a 360 exclusive) on PS5 I would be very happy indeed.
It's one of my favorite old school RPGs.
