A rumour doing the rounds on social media today claims the next Call of Duty is currently in development at Infinity Ward, and will release in 2026 on various platforms – including a supposed next-gen Xbox.
The rumourmonger, TheGhostofNoHope, is said to be well-connected when it comes to the first-person shooter series. He claims Modern Warfare 4 will ditch last-gen platforms like PS4, and may even jettison Warzone if the mode doesn’t get a serious uptick in players soon.
He also says he’s willing to “die on the hill” that a new Xbox is coming in late 2026. He adds that Infinity Ward already has development kits.
It’s a rumour he’s been pushing for quite some time, even as far back as May of last year.
A hypothetical PS6 is not expected until at least 2028, as this generation has always been expected to run longer due to the disruption caused by the pandemic. For years the PS5 was not readily available, and Sony only solved its substantial stock issues a couple of years ago.
We know that the Japanese giant is already working on a new console with AMD, but with the PS5 Pro only launching late last year, there doesn’t appear to be the appetite for a next-gen device just yet.
So, if what TheGhostofNoHope is saying is true, it’d mean the next-gen Xbox would launch a couple of years earlier than the PS6.
Obviously, beating the PS3 to market contributed dramatically to the Xbox 360’s success, but the industry is different these days. Players are locked to their digital libraries, for example, and games take longer to make.
The long cross-gen period spanning PS5 and PS4 is still ongoing, with millions of players not really seeing a meaningful incentive to upgrade. Furthermore, the PS5 Pro has been criticised by some for not offering many meaningful graphical improvements compared to the base model.
With games taking many years to develop now and Microsoft itself slowly transitioning into a third-party publisher, it’s unclear what actual advantages a next-gen Xbox would have as its market share continues to erode.
CEO Satya Nadella said earlier this year that it’s focused on “improving the profitability” of its business, so don’t expect heavily subsidised hardware sold at a loss. With the current state of hardware prices, next-gen consoles are going to cost a lot.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said he wants to beat PS6 on “hardware capabilities”, but launching early would open his company up to a counterpunch from PlayStation when its own next-gen system eventually arrives a couple of years down the line. There has been talk of a handheld, although this is apparently a long way away.
So, does any of this make sense, then? We’re going to say no, although Microsoft’s entire strategy is unpredictable these days.
The firm insists it’s still planning to sell consoles, but without exclusives, meaningful retail presence, and subsidised hardware, it’s unclear exactly who it’ll be aiming those presumably pricey systems at.
Still, it’s not impossible Microsoft may try to beat the PS6 to market, but we’d wait for more credible rumours to emerge before giving it too much thought.
Do you think the next Xbox will beat PS6 to market? (694 votes)
- Yes, Microsoft will try to get a head start
- Maybe, but I'm not really sure
- No, the next Xbox and PS6 will launch at the same time
- I don't care

Shouldn't it be easy for other scoopers to confirm or deny this? If Infinity Ward have devkits, loads of people will have seen them.
It’s hard to even get indifferent about the next Xbox irrelevant S/X.
I still have the impression this gen has not even properly started yet, with all cross-gen games. Actual gen only games are not that many and those are mostly poorly optimized on start. If the next gen comes earlier, then game developers will be even more lazy on optimizing games... lets see how it goes.
I'm looking forward to the 2026 release of the next-gen Xbox console since I'm very much into collecting physical games and I only play first party AAA exclusives
Surely if that's true it's a handheld.
Going so early against PS6 with a next gen console feels like a fumble waiting to happen.
@ThomasHL Well, I wouldn't say it'd be "easy" but we should start hearing more about it soon if this is real.
Xbox should emulate Sega and humbly exit the hardware business and focus on becoming a software developer and publisher (which is what Microsoft is) and focus on getting a decent ROI for the massive amount of the gaming industry they bought up.
Also, it doesn't even feel like the current generation has really started properly...nearly five years after current gen consoles were released.
Seems unlikely given the pace of and cost of new hardware. The earlier they go more chance of Sony delivering a cheaper or better box. This isn’t like the ps360 days.
However if this was their mobile hardware I could understand that
Everything indicates that yes they will. Spencer already said they won't be doing what they usually do and rumours from 2023/24 already stated they had finalised plans for their portable hardware. Xbox could have a huge success on their hands for their next consoles due to moving away from traditional console form factor, and targeting the portable hybird market. Gamepass is suited for this as it means you just pay a monthly fee and play as many games on the go as you'd like. Could see them having big wins if played correctly.
I’m happy with PS5 & Series X but new hardware is always exciting so I’m curious to see how this pans out.
Just another dumb decision among many others by MS lol. It’s comical they are going to release the next Xbox late next year and think it’s going to do anything for their console sales
It would make sense for XBox to try and get a head start. They forwent a mid-gen 'pro' model this time, so don't have a model on the market which is the new-hotness. But if they do launch something next year, it won't be meaningfully different from the PS5 Pro without being dramatically more expensive (assuming they don't want to make it a loss leader).
With millions more PS5s on the market, one has to wonder to what extent developers would support any higher-end features that the NeXtBox would offer, or whether PS5 would remain the standard SKU targeted by developers looking to release on console.
I think it makes sense given there's no Series X upgrade like the PS5 Pro. Also makes sense to try to beat the competition to market and have the most powerful console etc etc
I also don't really care fwiw 😂
Think it'll be out next year, with the supply of series consoles drying up it makes sense. Fable will probably be a launch title. Roll on the next GPU console. They should just call it Xbox GPU1, then the next one can be GPU2. Would make more sense than their current naming convention.
It doesn't matter if they do get this "head start" the console war is over, poeple will either wait for PS6 or are already on PC.
Considering the first few years will be mostly cross gen anyway that should give PS6 a significant advantage in theory. Better hardware at cheaper costs per frame.
But this still seems like a sensible decision from Microsoft, going toe to toe with PlayStation hasn't worked and they need a different approach. But I don't see how they can release a console after 6 years and make it the "greatest technological leap in a console generation". Only way they could do that is if they go super-premium, but that would kill their already dwindling market share.
Unless they significantly up their marketing, store presence, exclusive games, give people a reason to buy an xbox and heck even make people aware that xbox exists, who is going to buy this? I have over a hundred digital games across the last 3 xbox consoles but picked up a PS5 (my first since PS2) solely due to all the exclusive games. Xbox going multi platform means I have zero reason to buy another MS console, and I'm a 'fan'.
Gamepass has zero appeal to me, I already have too many games, and if you wait 6 months for a game to be fixed/patched/bugs removed, it's normally fairly cheap on sale anyway.
A next gen console so soon means not putting full focus on current gen.... A copout too soon.
I truly hope its good. SONY being the only option doesnt do anyone any good :/
At this Moment I am really not sure if I care at all about next gen consoles. Switch 2 looks interesting, but I also like my Steam Deck OLED, I am going to check out the Legion Go 2 also so may stick with PC handhelds as I've found that area to be interesting. I'll see. I'll wait to see what they offer first but at present I'm not overly interested in the next Xbox. I have a lot more interest for the Switch 2 then that currently.
I can see all next gen consoles including the Switch 2 getting price bumps over last gen, which makes them less attractive to be honest, Sony lost their friggin mids with the PS5 Pro pricing, so I don't have much hope PS6 and next Xbox will be under 550, Switch 2 under 400 UK pounds.
NO WARZONE 3 😂😂😂
That statement alone immediately voids this rumour.
Wasn’t the rumours in the last week that they were releasing it on ps4/xbone?
@Jacko11 Black out > Warzone
The way this generation is going, im not sure im interested in nextgen and might not get a PS6 within the first years after release.
I think they need too, releasing their consoles at the same time as Playstation (give or take a few weeks) just hasn't worked for them these last few generations.
If they release on their time own a few years apart like Nintendo generally do then their new console will get more of the spot light and will be the latest piece of tech on its own instead of competing.
@Oram77 not sure how that’s relevant but sound, you do you 👍🏻
Even if it’s their best console ever, if that’s true, I’m getting Dreamcast vibes from launching a newer, more powerful console too soon. I don’t think people will buy it. If the statistics show anything this generation, it’s that more people than even before still haven’t upgraded to the current generation and that Xbox has lost a lot of traction as a console developer while gaining momentum as a publisher.
Head starts no longer matter when people are already heavily invested in the ecosystem of their choice.
One of the troubles with Gamepass is that it denies that personal investment as basically as a subscription all the games accessible on it are disposable to the user.
However anyone who has spent a significant amount of money on PSN digital content, from PS4 and now PS5 eras are most unlikely to jump ship and abandon all those games they have 'purchased' and would no longer be accesible.
Backwards compatibility is now actually cross-gen investment and you can bet that (I believe Mark Cerny has already confirmed) that the PS6 will play all PS5 and PS4 games off the bat.
Xbox has already lost, headstart or not it will find it very hard to reclaim those PS users to it's fold.
And of course, now MS is a third party publisher, what would be the point of PS users going Xbox, unless of course you are rich enough to buy both.
I think they will try and release late 2026 and the PS6 mid 2027, but let's be real Microsoft putting out their next console before Sony will change absolutely nothing. Especially when most gamers won't take the risk as most games will still be releasing on PS6 and they know they can play the majority of new gen Xbox games on the new PlayStation console when it comes out. With hardly any exclusives it's just ain't going to sell.
Third party devs and publishers are not going to make exclusives for this xbox console, so whatever releases on this new xbox will also release on PS5.
@UltimateOtaku91 People with free GPU will buy it.
I've been saying for well over a year that the Prime will release in 2026. It needs to be remembered that Microsoft cancelled the mid-generation refresh for the Series consoles, probably due to the lacklustre sales of the Series consoles, but possibly also because they realised that to make a meaningful upgrade for the Series the cost would increase considerably. Microsoft likely decided that they stood a better chance of succeeding with a truly next generation console, than a minimal step up with a mid-generation refresh, a step that many think that Sony should also have done considering the pretty minimal improvement of the Pro over the PS5. Microsoft said they were cancelling the mid-generation refresh in order to concentrate on the Prime a while back now, and that means they could easily beat Sony by two years in bringing their next generation of console to the market.
Games such as Gears of War: E-Day, State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark and Blade did not include a 'Series' logo when they were shown at last years Xbox Summer Showcase, and the rumour was that it was because they were to be launch titles for the Prime. There are rumoured problems in the development of Perfect Dark that mean it may not be released as a launch title for the Prime though.
Personally, I am absolutely convinced that the Prime will release in Fall of 2026...
The next Xbox could beat PS6 to the market by two full calendar years, and it still would not make a damn bit of difference. There's no reason to own an Xbox anymore, all their games are coming to PS anyway, and you can play GP on your phone or PC, so...
Is it next-gen though? Likely more like a pro.
Doesn't make a difference now. Sony aren't in competition with them any more. They get their games. No ones buying an Xbox and getting rid of their PS because the next xbox is out a year earlier. I'm honestly surprised they're going ahead with a new console and not just moving full streaming. People insult PS5s output but Microsofts has been twice as bad. And they're trying to cut the gen short and move to a new gen when there's nothing notable on the Series X yet? Who's buying it
The only time they came close to matching Sony was when they used this strategy and released early, so it wouldn’t surprise me. I also suspect they will really push a rental or subscription service for the hardware
I will absolutely consider switching to Xbox next gen if Sony don’t get their act together. If their next gen console is cheaper, has a disc drive and comes with a stand in the box - sign me up.
I’ll keep my PS5 for exclusives, which will no doubt be backwards compatible for ‘next gen’ exclusives. Because without a disc drive, PS6 would be a massive downgrade as far as I’m concerned. The only benefit is that we can play slightly better versions of the games we can already play right now… eh 🤷
And Sony’s exclusive games aren’t nearly as strong as they were in the PS3 era anyway. Do we really need another reskinned, narratively safe, open-world collectathon that plays almost identically to the last one? It’s so safe and boring at this point. I can’t remember the last time I was excited for a PS exclusive. TLoU part 2 perhaps? And look how that turned out.
If they play their cards right, Microsoft have an opportunity to reclaim some of that lost ground and level the playing field again. I hope they do and I hope it serves to remind Sony of who they used to be and what they used to represent, which was not what they represent today (greed).
Removed - trolling/baiting
I don’t understand why they are having discussions and are still having console wars.
Technically PlayStation is releasing their console to early especially since all the games are cross-gen and l don’t understand why they are bringing this up.They still make games for the ps4 and ps5 why didn’t PlayStation 5 just single handling get games .
We don't need next gen until 2030.
best to ignore clickbait fake leakers
What significant difference or defining feature will it have? They already axed the two things that convinced me to try Xbox in the first place, FPS Boost and backwards-compatibility. Zero reason to get it, especially with Xbox games coming to PS5 with DualSense support and Pro Enhancements.
I absolutely believe they will launch in 2026, they have nothing to lose at this point when it comes to consoles so why not got for a hail mary? They gain nothing from releasing their console with PlayStation.
Ah, Xbox - I remember them.
The original Xbox was on the market for 4 years before being replaced by the 360 so I could easily see the next Xbox releasing 6 years after Series X|S.
It probably will launch 2026 or early 2027 - this has been a fairly persistent rumour now.
But imo it will be a really big mistake if next Xbox is a traditional console - it will either be very expensive, very underpowered, or a good bit of both.
This will not be enough to effectively start a new generation, and Xbox's dwindling market share doesn't help.
Then the PS6 will be launched 2028, will be significantly more powerful due to the time gap, and will make the next Xbox look like the series S of the generation, or worse, obsolete.
Microsoft can get all the head start they want, but in reality 99% of the mass market will wait as they usually do for PlayStation. Microsoft are making their own bed right now by jumping to full 3rd party support, casual gamers will wait for their favourite game to release on PlayStation because they now expect that they can play any game they desire on the system. The only people that will champion a new Xbox now are the diehard Xbox fans that want to pay for Gamepass and nothing more.
Given the catastrophic bungling state of games these days (MH being the most recent clown show, even on Pro) I’d certainly be interested in a new Xbox.
The bigger question mark for me is the architecture. I’m not sure what they can do at the moment given what AMD could supply within the existing architecture, other than making a slightly more powerful PS5 Pro, like they did with the One X.
Either that or they are going >£1000 into what amounts to a pre-built mid range PC with the console UI.
With 98% of games available on both consoles, and zero Sony exclusives that remotely interest me, I’m a free agent and will go with which ever console can maintain the best resolution and frame rate.
@Fiendish-Beaver Did you hear Prime somewhere or just start calling it that on your own? I’ve been calling it Prime for the past 3-6 months, forget exactly when, b/c I thought it would help them get away from the whole naming fiasco they’ve had the past 2 generations w/ X and X/S. But mostly because even they must realize by now that the Series S is an albatross around their necks so they should just go all in on a hardcore high end model, let the cheapskates game on PC.
Whether they use Prime or not, I don’t really care, I do think they’ll go with 1 model and a distinct naming convention, kind of start over. They’ll keep Xbox, but it needs something hard bold and singular to follow. Not 2, Alpha, New, Next or Super. Prime is all I currently have. Who doesn’t like Transformers?
If it’s a portable all bets are off. Xbox Pocket. 🤣
Xbox are releasing another console?! lol, I guess they just enjoy being a laughing stock and losing!
They can't compete with Nintendo or Sony, why are they still bothering?!
I'd buy a new Sega console, or even a TurboGrafix before I'd waste money on a new Xbox!
Guys ... I don't know how to tell you this, but there isn't going to be a new XBOX console. They lost and pivoted into being publishers.
Unless Sony goes out of business or a meteor lands on PlayStation HQ, Xbox going early into the next gen is literally the only slither of a chance that they've got at making any gains in the console market. So yeah, I imagine they'll go early.
I don't think it will work. But if they're not going to give up then this is their best shot. Series X is over.
Hey, @rjejr! No, I didn't nick it from you. Promise..! 😂 The name Prime was leaked by some insider or other about 6 months ago. I forget who it was now. I've been using that name on Pure Xbox ever since, although I'm pretty much the only one that does. Before that I used to call it the NeXtBoX, but that didn't take off either... 😂
@Fiendish-Beaver with a truly next generation console, than a minimal step up with a mid-generation refresh, a step that many think that Sony should also have done considering the pretty minimal improvement of the Pro over the PS5
But if this rumour is to be believed and Dev kits are already out there being worked on, then the Prme / NeXt will barely be a step up over the pro. So surely they also need to wait longer.
@rjejr the Series S is an albatross around their necks so they should just go all in on a hardcore high end model, let the cheapskates game on PC.
Except gaming PCs will always run at a higher price so they are not cheapskates, and if the Xbox goes hardcore high end with a silly hardcvore pricetag then swapping to PC woud be far more tempting than buying their console. You might not like the SS but without it MS could easily have bowed out this generation.
@Ilyn Except people have to have PCs. Or tablets. Or phones. You cannot function in today’s world without 1 of those 3 things. You know what you can do just fine without? A gaming console. So if Xbox Prime costs $700 and you don’t like it, fine, game somewhere else, but no $400 hampered console version to hold back 3rd party games. Or 1st party since MS has purchased a lot of 3rd party devs. Heck bring Gamepass to cloud gaming on smart TVs and you don’t even need a PC.
https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2025/01/06/xbox-lg-smart-tv-cloud-gaming/
@Fiendish-Beaver What no I didn’t think you got it from me but I can see how it reads like that. 😂 Now I’m wondering if I got it from someone else. Life is hard when your memory is Swiss cheese. I may have started calling the Series X/S NextBox like 6-7 years ago before I realized that was already a thing, waaaaay back when. Prime just popped into my head over dinner one night I think while mocking the Series S and hoping Switch 2 was as powerful.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeXT
I see no reason to hang on Spencers public comments (or private comments for that matter) he felt the same about PS5 and look what happened.
This is the ultimate Hail Mary, if it's true. And I think it's probably a mistake.
I'd raise serious concerns about whether this has enough planning put into it (a rush job?) and with the reveal of the Xbox Muse generative AI, I gotta wonder if this will be integrated to try to drum up talk. Yuck.
Interesting timing now that Trump is starting a global trade war. $1000 console wouldn’t be unrealistic.
And again, my digital library is where I live. I can wait.
Xbox wasting money releasing another console gamepass did both it helped and hurt Xbox. Microsoft should just become a game publisher at this point
"this generation has always been expected to run longer due to the disruption caused by the pandemic"
That's not the main reason at all. Generations will run increasingly longer simply by virtue of, well... physics.
Reducing the size of transistors inside a microchip has been by far the biggest driving force that pushes performance and architectural innovations in CPUs and GPUs.
It just so happens that shrinking has a hard limit: the size of the atom. And the more we approach that limit, the harder it gets to shrink nodes.
>No Old Gen support
Yeah, this rumor is false.
So many people here still seem to think that selling consoles will be the focus next gen.
And also, the Series S was a very necessary console this gen. Any future handheld Xbox or PlayStation will not be high end and will having a lower powered option to develop for in the market ensures that devs are prepared for that.
I don't even think it matters. 360 had success but ps3 still out sold it in the end anyway.
If ps5 pro is anything to go by in today's market, to have a next generation console is going to cost a hell of a lot. If a minimal upgrade like the pro was nearly double the price.
Xbox series X is a pretty beefy console and still hasn't moved the market.
The best thing Xbox could do is integrate steam and have PC games on top of console, to even compete
I can't understand Microsoft. They seem more interested in Gamepass than their consoles.
I bought a Series X early because I couldn't get hold of a PS5. While it was nice playing through some of the Gamepass exclusives for a few months, I soon started regretting the decision and got a PS5.
With their plans to bring most Microsoft studio games to other consoles, why would anyone bother with their console, especially now Gamepass isn't the same value it used to be.
I'm thinking they'll release a handheld first before a next gen console. But if they happen to release a next gen console late next year, they could make the price so high, maybe same price as ps5 pro or more. And then by the time the ps6 is out, they could reduce the price to match the ps6 or go lower.
