In the latest in a long litany of insults and injuries fans of Disco Elysium, perhaps the most masterfully written game ever made, have been forced to endure, developer ZA/UM wants to "reimagine" the game for mobile, intended to "captivate the TikTok user".
Completely missing the point and flying in the face of why Disco Elysium remains so beloved to this day, ZA/UM studio head Denis Havel said words in sequences that belong in the saddest ending of its beautifully bleak game: "We intend to captivate the TikTok user with quick hits of compelling story, art, and audio, ultimately creating an all-new, deeply engaging form of entertainment."
While the end product may be wonderful in its own way, we simply cannot imagine experiencing what has firmly become one of our all-time personal favourites and most beloved games on a phone, let alone in the frenetic form of "quick hits" designed to capture the attention of modern social media users. It would be hilarious, if it wasn't so sadly ironic, to see the developer become what the game itself so artfully skewered.
Are we wrong? Would you prefer your introspective, deeply philosophical roleplaying experiences presented in micro-bursts via your phone? Alas, "the limbed and headed machine of pain and undignified suffering is firing up again", and it seems our torment will never cease.

"captivate the TikTok user"
I just threw up in my mouth.
That being said I must get round to playing this one. PROPERLY!
I think it’s a weird way to frame as tiktok isn’t just short form videos and can be up to 1 hour long, but for mobile experience I think the game could work for the format however they are gonna do this version - and perhaps could help more people to try the game, and perhaps even get on console or get a console later if they don’t have one yet.
@Daft_Klebenflw I think I'm just showing my age. Or is it the kids who are wrong?
I think this is an ace idea - the reality is that young folks engage with entertainment in a completely different to how we do so I’m all for developers looking forward and trying fresh approaches. It’s not like the original Disco Elysium is going anywhere.
@Anke it's not the kids, they didn't ask for this. It's the sketchy group that engineered a shady takeover.
Tiktok users gonna play this game?
So.....Disco Elysium ADHD Edition?
Removed - offensive remarks
This honestly seems like a back-up plan for the bad reception ZA/UM's new game received. I didn't think they'd enable comments on that video and it's just like expected, thousands of people who were passionate about DE slammed them for shady tactics.
I love Disco Elysium to bits, it's a fantastic game but the people who are shopping it around now caused a lot of trouble to get their hands on that game. Not to mention how ethically irresponsible it is to put a game made for adults on a platform used by children.
DE is a very intelligent game, it can get into your mind and make you think about the consequences to the kind of actions that an underdeveloped mind shouldn't need to see or experience. I wouldn't even call it a cash grab, I'd call it desperation.
@GirlVersusGame They're not actually releasing it on TikTok - it's just a mobile game available on the app store. The game is simply inspired by TikTok.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the writer of this article is not the target audience for this game - nor are most people in this comment section. This isn’t meant to replace Disco Elysium; it's clearly designed to appeal to a very different audience, and I think that’s absolutely fine.
Honestly don’t see why it’s a bad idea to have it on a phone. I’d actually love to have it on the go. Games like this usually work really well with a touch interface.
BUT I don’t know why they feel the need to change it. Why ruin a masterpiece? As long as you can save the game when you want, it’ll be great.
This is how the soul dies. They take something so beautiful and kill a bit at a time for profit.
