Wow, it really is a wonderful era for retro-style beat-‘em-ups, isn’t it? Obviously, we recently had Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, as well as Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind.

But the next must play if you’re a fan of either of those is Marvel Cosmic Invasion, due out later this year. It’s being developed by Tribute Games, the masterminds behind Mercenary Kings and the aforementioned Shredder’s Revenge.

Here’s the overview: “Choose between 15 Marvel heroes in this frenetic action beat-‘em-up to fight against the deadly Annihilation Wave threatening the galaxy. From New York City to the depths of the Negative Zone, the future of the Marvel Universe will be fought for across the stars!”

You’ll be playing as the likes of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, and more. The chunky pixel art looks stunning – it’s reminiscent of that Super Nintendo era, but clearly utilising modern hardware to do things which wouldn’t have been possible in the 90s.

One neat trick here is that you’ll actually pick two characters to play as, and you’ll be able to switch between them dynamically to change up your approach and create new combos. That’s a really cool mechanic, and it should give you incentive to explore as much of the roster as possible.

Furthermore, as you’d expect from the team behind Shredder’s Revenge, this title will also feature drop-in/drop-out co-op, with both local and online play.

There’s no release date just yet, but the title’s coming to the PS5 and PS4 in 2025.
