Wow, it really is a wonderful era for retro-style beat-‘em-ups, isn’t it? Obviously, we recently had Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, as well as Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind.
But the next must play if you’re a fan of either of those is Marvel Cosmic Invasion, due out later this year. It’s being developed by Tribute Games, the masterminds behind Mercenary Kings and the aforementioned Shredder’s Revenge.
Here’s the overview: “Choose between 15 Marvel heroes in this frenetic action beat-‘em-up to fight against the deadly Annihilation Wave threatening the galaxy. From New York City to the depths of the Negative Zone, the future of the Marvel Universe will be fought for across the stars!”

You’ll be playing as the likes of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, and more. The chunky pixel art looks stunning – it’s reminiscent of that Super Nintendo era, but clearly utilising modern hardware to do things which wouldn’t have been possible in the 90s.
One neat trick here is that you’ll actually pick two characters to play as, and you’ll be able to switch between them dynamically to change up your approach and create new combos. That’s a really cool mechanic, and it should give you incentive to explore as much of the roster as possible.
Furthermore, as you’d expect from the team behind Shredder’s Revenge, this title will also feature drop-in/drop-out co-op, with both local and online play.
There’s no release date just yet, but the title’s coming to the PS5 and PS4 in 2025.

This looks amazing... Spider-Man
I love that this genre is back in a more popular way than ever. I am a little worried about fatigue though. Streets of Rage 4 was fantastic. Shredder’s Revenge also really good. I haven’t played Power Rangers yet but I am worried about that feeling a little same-y. If this wasn’t Marvel I would probably say pass for now.
As a huge beat em up fan I've been really spoilt for choice recently and this is another must play for me.
It's just a shame Sony force me to buy the PS5 versions so that I can use my arcade stick
This. Is. Perfect.
Day one.
And please release maximum carnage and separation anxiety on modern consoles!
All over this. I remember Xmen arcade, that was pure gold.
the ps4 is still getting games smh
Ah, but will it be better than Zvitor's fan games?
I'm looking forward to this, I was just thinking earlier today that we're about due an official Marvel Beat Em Up.
This looks amazing- they need to make more games like this
Fewer than 10 comments in, and one person is worried fatigue might set in with too many similar titles, while someone else is asking for more. Just goes to show we're all different, I guess.
I like this style of game, but a little goes a long way. I'm not sure I'll be picking this up until it shows up free on Plus next year.
Giving x-men arcade game vibes very cool. Marvel was definitely due for something like this with the 90’s costumes and all.
Take my money. Just take my whole wallet.
@EquiinoxGII X-men arcade vibes for sure!!
If this is anything like the 90s x men game, it will be day one.
I know these are 'retro' style, but I would love it if they could include proper 4k graphics as an option.
Looks good, but I'll wait for the anniversary or complete addition with all the DLC.
X-Men arcade + Captain America and The Avengers vibe. It looks fun too.
Dotemu, keep em coming 🤩
I used to rent Spider-Man Maximum Carnage and The Avengers games on the Mega Drive from Blockbuster when I was little (yes, I knew of Iron Man before he was cool), and this has shades of that so I'm on board.
Giving me Captain America and the Avengers vibes from back in my Mega Drive playing days.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap my best mate had a blast animating him! (as well as Venom, Storm and some others not yet shown off)
Im a big fan of X-Men and the classic suits. Love what im seeing in this trailer.
Nice. I'm a little burned out by beat 'em ups at the moment but I will try this eventually.
@Rich33 Wouldn’t change a thing
They definitely should do golden axe next, just add a little bit of blood here and there and make the game more serious
@Aventurier
You may not, thats why I say an option - options are good, and myself and others might be more enticed to buy.
Yeah, this is gonna get a ton of play time in my house! Looks terrific
I’m absolutely in for this!
The character swap mechanic is in double dragon, the little chibi rogue like beat em up that is actually really fun. I haven't watched the trailer yet but it does remind me of Cap and the Avengers. Loved the voiced bits in the Mega drive version. Good times.
@Rich33 I agree, it looks great fun but the gameplay is what I loved about that era, not the pixels. At least give an option to smooth it out.
@Stale-Bread That's interesting, I didn't know that!
The cosmic side of the roster is very unique! Nova and Phyla-Vell haven't gotten any movie, or recent-ish comics, love. Happy they didn't go with common picks like Star-Lord and Captain Marvel (Carol), niche roster choices are refreshing.
