25 years ago today, on the 4th March 2000 (we're going by Japan's current date here), the legendary PS2 was released. God, we're old.
The successor to the already wildly popular PlayStation, the PS2 would go on to sell a staggering 160 million units over the course of its life cycle. It's still the best-selling video game console of all time, with only the Nintendo Switch close to surpassing its record at the time of writing.
Many would argue that the PS2 has the greatest software library ever assembled — and it really is a thing of beauty. The generation was defined by so many classic PS2 titles, from beloved RPGs and outstanding action games, to top-tier fighters and eye-watering racers.
But it wasn't just the games that made the PS2 a global phenomenon. We need to remember that the system was also a very capable DVD player, and for much of its life, buying a PS2 was actually cheaper than buying a dedicated DVD device — a perfect recipe for success back in the early 2000s.
Following its March 2000 release in Japan, the PS2 would make its way to North America in October, while Europe got it in November. The console lasted almost 13 years before its worldwide discontinuation in 2013 — which, looking back, seems absolutely mad.
What are your fondest memories of the PS2? Dare we ask if you were there, day one? Go ahead and give away your age in the comments section below.
What are your thoughts on the PS2, 25 years later? (887 votes)
- It's the greatest console of all time
- It remains one of the best consoles
- It's a solid system
- It's overrated
- It was actually before my time

The PS2 has always been and will always be my favorite console of all time.
In terms of quantity of quality games and ease of use, I actually think PS4 is the best Sony console, but there's no denying the impact PS2 had on the industry and gaming zeitgeist in general.
Ps2 is a close second. PSX forever baby!
The PS2 had such a big library of games that it would be difficult to pick just 5 or 10 favorite games
Happy 25th anniversary PS2. So much memories, playing GTA Vice City, FFX, Persona 3, DMC 3, God of War 1 and 2, Fatal Frame, MGS2, Zone of the Enders 2 and more
Still play my PS2 along with my PS5 and sometimes my Switch. Also just found a CTR TV for free. Hooked it up to my PS2 and it's just simple nostalgic fun.
Depending on the PS2 games, they could take anywhere from a few hours to 20 hrs to beat and even fully complete. Some RPGs are over 40 hrs.
Whereas now, the standard game takes 30 hrs to beat at an almost minimum (AAA titles anyway) plus if you like doing all the side quests and other stuff, could take 80-120hrs total! PS2 games just respect your time so much.
At first it's always weird playing an old game after playing Stellar Blade or Gran Turismo 7 on a PS5 pro. But an hour in, you forget the graphical differences, you get used to the janky controls, and it's just pure fun.
I was lucky enough to be a day one adopter of the PS2. I still remember picking up my pre order from Electronics Boutique and proudly walking through town with it.
Thinking about it, it was probably the first console I actually bought with my own hard earned money.
Any consoles I had before that we're bought for me as either Christmas / Birthday's presents
I didn't get the PS2 around launch and in fact when I first saw it I was rather disappointed given the absurd hype around it. The first game I played was The Bouncer, which was a bit rubbish and looked worse than games I'd been playing on the Dreamcast.
I did get a PS2 around a year later and it certainly had some amazing titles that I enjoyed like GTA3, Vice City and Metal Gear Solid 2 but I played on the Gamecube much more than it.
There's no denying that consoles overall impact but it wasn't a huge part of my own gaming journey
I was there from the start after also owning the PS1. PS2 was both a DVD player and a console for the price of a DVD player - a great bargain.
I remember having fun with Burnout Revenge with friends. I remember the joy of MGS2 and the initial letdown of having to play as Raiden, also Snake Eater was great and at least Big Boss looked like an older Solid Snake.
GTA3, GTA San Andreas and GTA Vice city were perfect, pulpy games.
It was a great machine and it had one hell of a library
@Member_the_game I rememer the anxiety whenever I used to buy a new console from Game or EB, before online shopping. You would be walking back through town centres to your car just hoping you wouldn't drop the thing, or get robbed as it was obvious what you had 😂
Much different to the PS5 launch day where the driver obviously had a van full of consoles, when I answered the door he just said "happy PS5 day with a huge grin". You could just tell he was so happy for folk that day.
Still my favorite console and game library of all time.
I probably liked the PS2 the least of the consoles that gen... Might be some bias, there.
Still a fantastic system. Still waiting for many of its best titles to be available on modern platforms (WHY ARE RATCHET AND GOD OF WAR TAKING SO LONG!!).
I think it's remarkable that the PS2 showed weak consoles with mass appeal (DVD player) sell a lot better than powerhouses. Yet everyone besides Nintendo was like, "moar pooower!"
It’s a great DV- I mean, console, but the Xbox360 tops it.
I loved my PS2. Heck i have loved all my PS console. But… and i take mess on here all the time for this. Sony always has my least favorite controller. I simply do not like the thumb sticks and the sizes they have came in. Most were to small and i find the Dual sense a little to wide and tall. That being said PS2 was a ton of fun. Me and my friends played Tekken Tag just about daily.
@carlos82 that’s interesting , the gamecube was my first console own console! what games did you have for it?
@nomither6 i have the Xbox 360 as my 1A and the Super Nes as my 1B. It is just so close. And then the PS2. For me my PS order is
1 PS2
2 PS1
3 PS3
4 PS5
5 PS4
I had one from pretty early in the life cycle but never found the machine particularly compelling, albeit that it arrived at a time in my life when other things took more of my time.
I preferred the og Xbox personally.
I don’t really think I’ve had much chance to play a PS2? Hmmm. I remember watching my brother play it a few times. But he never uses it. I should try it myself. Or get his broken one fixed.
@Ilyn
Haha yeah I know what you mean, that awful fear of being mugged.
On the flip side though waiting in for something to be delivered can be just as agonising.
My next purchase will be a Nintendo Switch 2, ideally I'll pre order it from Smyths meaning I can collect it myself and park right outside the door
@HonestHick What's a Super Nes?? nah, just kidding haha. But i gotta be honest, I don't know how yall were able to play those snes type games back then, i'd die of boredom. The closest upbringing i had with something similar to that era was the gameboy color, and I didn't really play it much, i just vastly preferred (3D) home consoles. heres my ps order though, nostalgia aside -
1.PS3
2.PS2
3.PS4
4.PSP
5.PS1
6. A Rock
7. PS5
Wish sony would rerelease like nintendo and rhe SNES. Make it an open preorder period for enthusiasts to get a device for the collection of games
The PS2 will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the only time I ever stood in line to buy a game console, waiting overnight at my local Best Buy on launch day.
@nomither6 Gamecube has the best launch lineup I've seen and on day 1 I had Luigi's Mansion, Burnout, Wave Race, Star Wars Rogue Leader and Super Monkey Ball. From then I got all of Nintendo's own games and as a big Resident Evil fan I was spoilt for choice with those games as well
Def the GOAT for me personally, such a fantastic console in virtually every way!
N.i.c.e.What do you guys think did the ps2 had the best library of games ever.grand theft auto 3.vice city and liberty city.god of war games are the best.word up son
@nomither6
Interestingly enough if I listed my favourite PS consoles from best to worst my list would more or less be the exact opposite of yours 🤣🤣
The PS3 is safely my least favourite
@carlos82 nice. the GameCube was such a solid & underrated console, and squadron had some insane graphics. so did RE4.
Was my favourite console until the ps4 gave us the ultimate gift of the witcher 3
@Member_the_game hey, opinions really are like ***holes 😂. and one man’s trash is another man’s treasure 😂 . i’ll die on a hill defending the ps3 and take it with me to my grave!
Its still March 3rd for a few hours where I live but yeah, happy 25th anniversary PlayStation 2!🎉🎂 You always have a special place in my heart and memories.❤️
@nomither6 360 was better than the ps3 and that's the only time I will ever say that
I was 16 when it launched, just started my first ever full time job and I went to Woolworths (lol) and spent every penny of my first wage on a Gran Turismo 3 bundle!! Don’t think i slept that night
@nomither6
The way I see it, it's like having 5 children, obviously you love them all in their own way but you'll probably (secretly) have a favourite and least favourite.
If I we're to give you my order of preference it would be:
PS5
PS1
PS2
PS4
PS3
I guess I've listed them in the order that gave me the most enjoyment.
The PS5 is just a very good all rounder that does everything well
I think the PS3 was at a time in my life when I was out doing other things instead of gaming, also I had an Xbox 360 as well which I thought was the better console.
The one and only time I've preferred Xbox to PlayStation
Christmas 2001 : Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry and Pro Evolution Soccer. Good times 🤟.
PS2 was the one playstation I missed at it's peak, because I was addicted to everquest at the time. I caught up since then though, still got one set up. Playing through champions of norrath at the moment, an everquest spinoff strangely enough. I still play outrun coast 2 coast a lot too, that's definitely a lifetime comfort game for me at this point.
Concur w/ @RBMango that PS2 is my favorite console of all time. W/ Jak & Daxter being my favorite platforming game, and still only platinum. 😎
Also concur w/ @carlos82 that The Bouncer was rubbish, a 20 minute game that you played 3x so it technically lasted an hour, and the beginning of the end of Squaresoft goin all in on graphics over story and gameplay. 😩
I bought PS2 when FFX released, having played FF7, 8 and 9 basically in 3 consecutive years I was really looking forward to X, and the graphical advancement from PS1 to PS2 was epic. And I played a whole lot more great JRPG on there, and all the 3D platformers. Besides Jak there was Sly, R&C and Tak off the top of my head.
Then I mistakenly traded it in to get a Slim but never did, so my discs gather dust. That might add to my nostalgia. But even if I did still have it, still the best ever. Graphics weren’t all that much better than Dreamcast, but the quick demise and lack of games let PS2 surpass it in my mind.
So how long until Sony announces PS2 sold 170 million, Switch is catching up? 😂
@QualityGeezer Yup i thought so as well, the ps3 and vita were the only playstation consoles i never had.
All depends how old you are. I specifically remember the snes pulling in all my friends who never cared about gaming. SF2 and Mario cart being the pull.
The SNES was imo the best console of all time
@Member_the_game that’s a good analogy, i feel you on that; part of our enjoyment with consoles can also depend on where we are in life too. I also agree about the ps3 not outclassing the competition. As for the PS5, you’re right about that, it’s just that the state of the industry has changed so much, for worse imo. aside from PC , i think console gaming has seen better days.
@QualityGeezer Of course it is, everyone knows the Xbox360 is the goat. Proof being that when you reach the highest peak, all that’s left is to fall way back down, which is what microsoft did!
Struggled for awhile to get one, due to the disastrous stock shortage. I’d call a local gaming store (remember those?) every few days, and FINALLY scored one a couple of weeks before Christmas. Seeing that awesome boot screen, playing SSX, and watching DVDs…it really felt like what the N64 had printed on the box: the fun machine! The system was home to one of the greatest libraries of games. One of the greatest consoles ever.
PS2 was great. Third best console of its generation.
@Balosi Champions of Norrath was my first dungeon crawler! LOVED that game!
Ps2 doesn’t rank as high for me because I was clinging onto hope that my Dreamcast would survive the generation. Alas, I eventually caved, sold it and got a ps2. It was around the time my interest in gaming waned for quite some time. I didn’t really get back into it until I got a ps4pro.
I always had consoles and gamed a bit. Especially for halo 3 and gears of war.
But if I ranked the PlayStations:
PSX
Ps2
PS4
PS3
Ps5
Pretty easy call on those for me. I find myself mostly playing older games on ps5 with only a few games this gen that really got me. Returnal and cyberpunk 2.0+ phantom liberty being those.
Never played one!
Was too busy having fun to bother at the time.
My personal favourite... I was 11 years old when I got mine so this console defined those early years. Gaming during the PS2 and PS3 was incredible, E3 was like Christmas.
I was just so excited and fascinated by this industry during these years.
Happy birthday to the greatest console of all time 🥳🍻
I can't forget the 1st experience when i played MGS 2, Onimusha 1, FF X, GT 3, and DoA 2 Hardcore. These 5 was my 1st games when i got a PS2 and my jaw was dropped on the floor so many times.
Later down the line, PS2 still gave me that amazing experiences with games like MGS 3, Onimusha 2 / 3 / DoD, DMC 1 & 3, Tekken 4 & 5, VF 4, Odin Sphere, Persona 3 & 4, GoW 1 & 2, FF XII, Shadow of the Colossus, God Hand, GTA Vice City & SA, Yakuza 1 & 2, Okami, KH 1 & 2, Ace Combat 4 & 5, ZoE 1 & 2 etc etc.
So many great games to play, which imho no console this days that can match the variety, quality, and impact of PS2 library.
I had to experience PS2 retroactively even though I was born before the SNES was released. My parents purchased me a PS2 in 2000 and three months later, the disc drive died. Sony refused to repair it for free. Not sure why, I was young. To this day, my parents refuse to purchase anything with the name “Sony” on it. We quickly became a GameCube + Xbox household. The cool thing is I’ve been able to have experiences for the first time over the last 20 years of my life and some of my friends have coveted that first exposure to so many classics. These days, I’m very much a platform-agnostic gamer with a proclivity towards Nintendo games but the PS2 had a stellar library.
Oh man, YOU feel old! I started with the Atari 2600, then the Commodore 64, then the Commodore Amiga, Sega Genesis, PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and then PS5, not forgetting the PSP and PSVita and Steam Deck in there as well! I think for sheer quality of games, C64, Amiga, PS2 and PS3 are hard to beat. I'm still playing From Russia With Love!
Having bought 7 of then over its lifespan, with 6 breaking for one reason or another, im thinking it was more of the most breakable console of all time as opposed to most popular. (360 gets a lot of flak but I only had one of those break and it was within 10 days of purchase so was replaced for free. Something none of my ps2s were)
HAPPY 25th PLAYSTATION 2!! I'm still playing it to this day and still have all the games for it.
@nomither6 HAHAHA at number 6. A rock indeed. I only use my PS consoles since PS3 as an exclusive machine. PS5 exclusives haven’t done a lot for me yet. I did beat Ratchet and Clank rift apart 3 times cause it was fun and it looked next gen. But otherwise not much play time on it as of late. Super Nes was my first console i ever had and loved it to the moon and back. But Xbox 360 is in-fact my favorite.
@HonestHick right on 🤘 what games did you play on your SNES?
@nomither6 man i was a young kid, but i loved all the Mario games, Mario kart was so much fun. Castlevania, Super Punch-Out. Zelda a link to the past. I mean there are just so many good games on that console. Donkey Kong Country was super fun.
I remember the first three games my family got with our PS2: GTA Vice City, Kingdom Hearts, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4. So many great memories.
Got mine in 2006 after getting paid from a summer job with more money than I’d ever had before, so of course I had to spend it on something fancy to enjoy during the vacation. I can’t remember the price anymore, but surely it was discounted by that point.
I only really ended up playing through God of War (which I picked up with the console) and God of War 2. Those alone did make it worth the price, but obviously there were a lot more games that should’ve clicked with me. I think it was just a mix of also playing on pc at the time and other things coming in the way that shortened my time with PS2, until PS3 brought me back to console gaming.
@wildcat_kickz PS2 had more classics than PS4. I don't think any Playstation after PS2 achieved the same and ever will again.
My first console (after fake SNES) around 2006. No patches, no dlcs, no mtxs... just pure working games. Perfect times.
@Shrek_Realista This is all a matter of taste and perspective, but I disagree. I imagine that answer has a lot to do with what console you played as a kid, but I may be wrong.
For me, my top 3 games of all time all come from the PS4 generation (Witcher 3, Red Dead 2, and Bloodborne). PS2 has plenty of classics, no doubt, but dollars to donuts, I think PS4 has bigger bangers, more of them, and easier access to games even beyond its generational scope, making it the superior generation. At least to me.
One reason the PlayStation 2 was so popular is its price was just $129.99. It dropped to $99 with inflation, that's just $147 today.
@nomither6 The PS3 was great but I think I would have to rate it differently depending on if it was the launch model or the later model. The launch one was so much better due to the inclusion of full backwards compatability which sadly got removed along the way.
I still liked the new one I got after my original died, but it was just a bit lacking in comparison. Also its the only PS i ever had die and both my PS3s died
@Ilyn same here. lost my fat to the red screen of death because of it overheating i think. but i still have the slim, and yeah, it’s a bit of a downgrade from the OG models. i’m not really a fan of slim models of playstation consoles in general but im sorry to hear that about yours. backwards compatibility is a must
