If you're the type to bemoan the fact that AAA games just seem to be getting bigger and bigger, you'll like what Capcom's had to say about Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
In a new interview with Famitsu (as translated by Automaton), director Satoru Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki drop some key information regarding the recently revealed title.
In terms of game length, we're apparently looking at a 20-ish hour adventure, with linear progression. That is to say, the developer's sticking to the traditional Onimusha blueprint; this is about cleaving your way through dedicated levels, rather than exploring a big open world.
And while there remains a clear focus on combat — complete with the return of devastating Deadly Strikes — the duo suggest that Way of the Sword will also feature puzzle-like elements, similar to what you'll find in past instalments.
Interestingly, the interview goes on to confirm that this is will basically be a standalone story with very little connection to previous Onimusha games. That doesn't come as a huge surprise, we suppose, given how long the franchise has been out of commission — but we're left wondering whether Way of the Sword is Capcom's attempt at fully rebooting the property.
Oh, and there's going to be blood — lots of blood. Kadowaki is pretty sure that the title's going to be handed a CERO Z rating in Japan — the equivalent of Mature or 18+ — thanks to its depictions of gory violence, including dismemberments. Sounds good to us!
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is still targeting a 2026 release on PS5, but is your hype starting to build? Cut down all who would oppose you in the comments section below.

The only thing that would hype me more up is the return of Jean Reno
I’m very hyped. Hoping Onimusha 2 gets a physical release. Got my Onimusha remastered copy displayed on my shelf
I really liked Onimusha back in the day, I even bought it a second time on Xbox when they released the Genma version there.
Apparently the main story was only 4 hours long, it was definitely a different time back then 😅
@ChrisDeku I played the Onimusha remaster not too long ago and had totally forgotten how short it is. Stumbled into one of the last boss fights after just a few hours and I was like "oh, right, it's a PS2 game!"
I love my massive modern RPGs but part of me misses those two-session games of the PS2 generation. Such tight design.
A Z rating doesn’t say a lot, Resident Evil has been getting them for years and they are still censored (the regular versions more so)
Expect the western version to be similar to Resi’s western versions
I enjoy longer adventures and open world games that dont take things too far (Hogwarts Legacy was about ideal open world size for me), but I really enjoyed RE2 and 4 remakes, and this sounds in the same ball park so to say.
Definitely room for all the above in my collection.
20 hours has nothing to do with short. That's still at least 5 hours too long. But better than nothing of course. That's around the same length as a RDR 2 or TLoU2 (both also too long but obviously better than 40+ bs)
This all sounds perfect. Respecting the heritage but bringing something new. I am super happy.
@ShogunRok
If I remember correctly (and my memory can be a bit 'fuzzy') , the original was even considered a bit too short compared to RE titles of the day.
Subsequent Onimusha games were longer, but as I recall (and imo) did miss out on a bit of the atmosphere created in the original - which was really based, whether intentionally or not, on the premise of RE1 ie a single large mansion and grounds.
Edit: removed unintentional emoji
@Frmknst RDR2 is a 50 hour main story, it’s massive.
Just have a little nod to the OG, like finding Samanosukes armour or something.
@Czar_Khastik he wants to return too, fingers crossed Capcom will call him.
Most hyped for this game.
This is music to my ears. I can’t wait for this one, and I’m glad this series is being revived.
20 hours is longer than all previous games. But i hope Capcom still maintain high replay value with rewards from speedrun, higher diificulty, and especially Dark Realm arena.
And i hope they still give some references about characters from previous games...
20-40 hour games are the perfect length for me
Onimusha games is fun.so onitsha way of the sword is going to be good. Word up son
Loved the older games, will definitely be keeping an eye on this one. Really cool how you can play as Toshiro Mifune, guy was a legend.
Thank you capcom!
Very hyped for this one and the 2nd game's remaster. Hoping we get the third and fourth entries to build towards Way of the Sword.
rdr2, while being impressive was such a drag that just pissed on my time.
Short games (< 10 hours) are, if they're good, highly replayable by default, even without additional post game incentives. I will often return for mgs, uncharted, resident evil, shenmue, sly cooper, silent hill and the likes. These games all respected ones time.
These days consumers feel ripped off for regular priced games under 40-60 hours, and yet complain that they can't finish the backlog that is stacking in the empty void inside of them.
This is sounding better and better, a game as long as it needs to be. I only played the first three, but I remember them being well crafted, dark, exciting and atmospheric, so sounds like we’ll get similar!
20 hours and linear! Reviews depending I’m sold.
20 hours and linear sounds perfect to me!
Sounds great. LINEAR!! I love that word. Sick to the back teeth with everything being open world 80+ hours *****. Let's get back to what made videogaming great 👍
Playing Oni 1 Warlords on PC and it's a shame it didn't get a proper remake with R.E engine or something I enjoy it but man has it aged. Yet it looks like Oni 2 is getting the better treatment I just really can't wait for Oni 3 because that cutscene at the beginning seeing it on PS2 was amazing
Please be good, please be good.
Sounds good to me. Don't mind a shorter story if it has good replay value. I remember playing through Onimusha 2 multiple times to see how things changed when you had good/bad relationships with the various allies. Definitely looking forward to this!

@Fides189 onimusha games we're always short, their better that way. Dawn of dreams was only longer because of its two discs
I'm hyped for this, capcom and others japanese devs are on fire this gen compared to western devs. Not to mention we've also going to get gta 6 and switch 2 this year, man 2025 will be a hype years for gaming 😃
@Nakatomi_Uk that opening cutscene was wild, Sama just taking down a ship by himself
That will look great on my PC.🤣
@Jorogumo These console specific sites always only mention their own platform for multiplatform games because that's the platform they're covering.
Here's an example from Pure Xbox
https://www.purexbox.com/news/2025/03/the-sinking-city-is-getting-an-unreal-engine-5-remaster-for-xbox-series-xs
And Nintendo Life with a list of upcoming Switch games that are almost all multiplatform.

Linear is better. Hate having to decide which way to go and hoping i dont lock myself out of something in the other directions.
@ChrisDeku I was just thinking... I know I spent a good few hours on hunting, but no way is RDR 2 a 20 hour campaign!
I hope they at least reference the original games. When we’re talking about ancient warriors and oni, even some time travel, I think it’d be cool to reference the entire series.
Finding Samonosuke’s gauntlet, maybe some of the weapons from Onimusha2 characters, a lil bit of Jean Reno. It’d be exciting lol
This is the way.
