As it's been several more months since we went 1,000 days without any word at all regarding Kingdom Hearts IV, Square Enix's social media post highlighting a recent exchange between itself and director Tetsuya Nomura immediately perked our ears up. We really should have known better.
Celebrating the series' 23rd anniversary (thanks, GamesRadar+), publisher Square Enix asked Nomura if he had any obscure paopu fruit lore he'd care to share with a starving audience. As we all know, this star-shaped fruit is native to the Destiny Islands, and as established in the original Kingdom Hearts:
"If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined. They'll remain a part of each other's lives no matter what."
The Square Enix team asked Nomura if "there are any untold stories behind the paopu fruit?"
Nomura responded with, "You mean the Paradise of Promise?"
We could already feel our blood pressure rising at this point, but pressed on for the sake of a story.
Square Enix tried again: "Did the word 'paopu' come from combining the words 'Paradise of Promise'?"
Seemingly drunk on a fermented form of the delicious-looking fruit, Nomura said, "Or was it Paradise of Pure?"
The publisher then actively decided to publish the following response.
SE said, "Hmm!?" To which Nomura replied, "I guess there are no particular untold stories."
What do you make of this baffling Kingdom Hearts exchange, apparently a reward for fans in honour of the series' 23rd anniversary? Please don't link to lengthy lore explainers in the comments section below.

There was a time when I would have considered this kind of exchange quirky and cute, but I am well beyond that point, especially since KH4 has been MIA for almost three years.
@RBMango Yeah I have to agree. The game was announced way way way too early and we haven't heard a slim of info on it since the initial reveal trailer.
Also the exchange is Nomura's usual vague info on stuff in the game lmao
I'm glad people enjoy KH but never could get into it myself. This goes beyond your typical convoluted JRPG storyline into "i just didn't get it". Good work if you got something out of it though.
@Khayl "SE said, "Hmm!?" Ro which Nomura replied"
I think you meant to NOT ro lol. 😅
@LifeGirl To be honest, it's not that convoluted, it just demands a lot from the player and pretty much requires you to play all of the games in order to understand the story properly.
@KoopaTheGamer expecting gamers to play games is a big ask these days
@WiiWareWave Khayl clearly seemed just as drunk writing this as he’s making ‘Nomura out to appear lmao
@SuperSilverback lmaooo if this ain’t the truth
Yup the storyline is followable if you actually pay attention. It’s actually great having a long running almost serialised twistey turny storyline in video games. Not too many of those.
I've never played a KH game, but I can see the influence this franchise has had on FF games recently.
Kingdom Hearts conversation (definition taken from the Oxford dictionary): when two or more people talk but don't understand each other even after explaining their intent multiple times
I definitly like it. I love figuring out head scratchers.
I just wish they were more consistant with what they do with it. Those mobile games... I dunno.
I would like to see the return of playable Ventus though.
@lifeGirl, I enjoyed the first KH for the creative crossover between FF and Disney. The 2nd game looked great, but started to eschew logic.
Way too convoluted.
