Turning the clock back roughly 15 years to the heights of the PS3 generation, Sony has supplied its third home console with an unexpected firmware update as of today, 5th March 2025. The system patch updates the console to a version number of 4.92, but don't expect it to come with any dramatic changes for the old box.
The headline addition for PS3 firmware update 4.92 is its improvements to "system performance", as has been the case for the past couple of console updates. You'd need to go back to patch 4.89 for anything meaningful to be added, which even then was simply adding increased account protection. The new update renews the PS3's Blu-Ray player encryption key, but that's all you're getting.
It's not like PS5 where you can still hope for new features like proper Folders and stability updates; those sorts of large-scale additions for PS3 are long gone now. Still, it's nice to know at least one employee at Sony is still looking out for the PS3, updating its performance where they can.
Is your PS3 even hooked up to your TV, or is it sitting in a wardrobe gathering dust? Give it a wipe and a firmware update in the comments below.

Almost certainly this is just to make the modders have to update their CFW methods
Was suprised to see the update, but knew it wasn't anything major. The PS3 is still great in 2025 though! 🙌🏻 I cherish my library of games (most of them stuck on the console) dearly 🥹
My favourite console ever, still plugged in but rarely played, only for skate 3...
Real shame they never cleaned up the interface and left it basic, pretty sure some of it is redundant now.
Web browser and whats new section for a start, leave it in a nice legacy state. I just looks abandoned, pretty sad.
@cmdrmarc Sony officially aren’t interested in fixing ps3, psp or Vita exploits as per their bug bounty page.
I read this and thought, is this backwards compatibility for the PS5!?! 😂. I keep threatening to play Puppeteer again, but I’ve got to a hard bit. It’s still hooked up, just not plugged into the TV at the moment (so just power)
Wow! Still got my PS3 hooked up; I am going to get this update later.
Ps3 is legendary. So many good times.word up son
I'll be updating both of mine today.
It did feel more stable than usual when I turned on my PS3 today
Mine has been boxed up for a good while. There are some games I’d like to go back to (Ratchet Clank Future Trilogy, Infamous 1-2…), but not so badly anymore that I’d want to setup the console. Dualshock 3 also feels kinda terrible to use after having become so used to DS4 and Dualsense.
The last update bricked my PS3, so thanks for that Sony. If you don't play online, care about trophies or download games I recommend not downloading any more updates, just to be sure.
I played Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn
on it last week, so I still use it - but not as frequently as PS4/PS5/Vita/PSTV
Wait, there are PS3s out there in the wild that haven't burned themselves out???
My PS3 Super Slim is hooked up to the tv as my dvd player, I occasionally borrow them from the library to watch old timey movies from the 80s w/ my kid, but all 3 of our controllers have various button issues so we can’t game on it. Not sure there’s much I’d want to play on that old system anyway.
My PS3 phat is sitting on a shelf or on the floor, it’s around here somewhere.
My PS3 (and Wii U) is proudly plugged into my living room TV while the PS5 Pro and Switch are hooked up to my laser UST projector. I still play it from time to time, it was the PS3 and Wii that brought me back to gaming after a break lasting more than a decade.
I tried playing a ps3 game via streaming, it took like 10 min to start the game. I will still plug in the ps3
I'll update my 25xx series Slim tonight then - still gets used for all those games stuck on the old stager. Still think the XMB was one of Sony's finest UI efforts.
It's probably just an update to the onboard clock to get it ready for the time changes end of march that's all
I love my PS3 but I have to get inside to replace the coin battery but like the PS2 it's not bloody easy and I don't want to damage it. I have a chunky PS2 and the coin battery needs replacing the clock doesn't stay but again it's right at the bottom and I don't want to damage it.
I have one of each type. My launch model 60Gb sits dead in a box in the closet. I'll pony up the $600 to get it Frankenstein'd one of these days. The Super Slim is my primary - I dusted it off last to play Devil May Cry 4 and Spec Ops: The Line. One thing I have been hoping for is native Dualshock 4 support since my DS3's keep dying, but I do have a new solder station and a drawer full of bad controllers. Some new stick modules and a few new batteries should solve that issue.
I bought Drakengaard 3 from PSN just a while back, and played all through to the final boss battl... song. Which is just too damn hard.
That initial price of 599 made owning the PS3 impossible for me for a number of years but eventually i was able to buy one. It ultimately became one of my absolute favorite systems! I played more games on it than PS4 or PS5.
Mine is still hooked up and gets played at least every other day even now.
Somewhat starting to feel nostalgic for this lol
@cmdrmarc Nah, it's primarily to update the Blu-ray encryption keys. Usually, Blu-ray players get these keys from newer disks, but it seems the PS3 doesn't.
Love my PS3 as it's still out and I am still playing my gaming collection
excellent media player mp4s, dvds, blu rays and mainly excellent games
My PS3 still works just fine, I'll get it updated when I can.
Mine just turns itself off every time I turn it on and I've no idea why.
Still plugged in and sits proudly underneath my TV. Rarely used for gaming these days but occasionally for a bit of Pixel Junk Monsters (streaming a bit inconsistent on my PS5). Still using the PS3 for pics and music - would love some of these features and playlists brought over to PS5.
Still have my Slim with 1TB HDD plugged in and hooked up! Still has much of media content from the 10 years from when I bought it.
Loved the XMB and dynamic themes and don't think PS4 or PS5 UI really improved upon it (other than being faster!)
I don't play it as much as I'd like ..but still many games I want to re play or indeed play through!
It still supports quite a few streaming services too last time I checked, honestly the price they've been selling at has been quite the bargain considering you get a blu ray player (and music cd!) too. I think they've been creeping up out of bargain territory lately though.
@Bunkerneath Yes. I have one that is fine.
Actually this worries me as i wasn't aware about the Blu-ray encryption update. So it's possible in the future that even if you use your ps3 as a Blu-ray player you could end up with one unable to play the most recent releases.
The ongoing future of things being released on disk being a separate matter....
@feral1975 Probably the paste in your processor it overheats.
I bought PS3 two years ago and is still pluged into a TV. I've played only first Infamous so far though. I am going to play Infamous 2 soon
I just bought WET, Terminator Salvation, and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct last week. I like to try and snag physical only PS3 games still!
