Teruyuki Toriyama, formerly of PlayStation's Japan Studio, has announced the opening of Sirius Studio — a new Tokyo-based development outfit that'll focus on "high-end console and VR" games.
Toriyama's track record is what makes this move interesting. Before leaving Japan Studio in 2020, he was producer on FromSoftware classic Bloodborne, the PS5 remake of Demon's Souls, and PS Vita action RPG Soul Sacrifice. He also produced Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which is perhaps where the acknowledgement of VR projects comes from.
That said, Toriyama did work for VR-focused developer Thirdverse after his departure, but apparently, he wasn't keen on the company's push towards a more casual market. As such, he's established this new studio under Japanese publisher gz.
gz itself has mostly stuck around mobile and VR projects since its inception in 2013, and so Sirius Studio seems to be positioned as the company's first real foray into a more 'hardcore' space.

No digs on Toriyama, but I can't see how anyone would be excited for an announcement like this. The general public doesn't even understand what producers do for video games. Like, did he help Miyazaki construct the aesthetics of Bloodborne or did he facilitate Skype meetings? Pretty big difference.
Japan studio also worked on demon souls remake hmmm. I wonder why their logo is not shown when the game is launched. Also guessing why the game came out in only 2 years after shadow of Colossus remake
Damn that’s a good resume of games. Still hoping for a console release of soul sacrifice
@bossuche9 you think Japan Studio had a bigger hand in making Demon Souls Remake?
@wildcat_kickz Producer is a non-development role. It is like a manager, making sure the project is on time, resources are allocated efficiently etc etc
Some producers may also have creative roles though, or even technical roles. Warren Spector who directed Deus Ex was just a producer or similar role for the vast majority of his games.
"High-End Console Games"
Why so Sirius?
@ChrisDeku Yeah, that's kinda my point. The title of "Producer" isn't clearly defined and may not have anything to do with the direction of a game itself, so saying someone was a producer on multiple cool projects doesn't necessarily translate to the new projects being cool.
It's like bragging that the payroll guy from Naughty Dog is starting a new company.
I'd prefer the games to be high end, rather than the target console. That's a producer for you.
Oh I enjoyed soul sacrifice. I hope they make some decent games.
His new studeo needs to not waste time on VR. It's dumb.
It will be another souls-like... not interrested anymore.
